Message from russ.leathe@gordon.edu

I will be teaching a self-study course in Management Information Systems.  Thankfully, I get to choose my own book.  It’s been a few years since I have taken an MIS course, -  If you have taught or have recently taken an MIS course, could you recommend a good text book?

Thanks

Russ

Here is an opportunity for the open text book folks on this list...

I personally prefer the David Kroenke Using MIS text! I've been using it in the course I teach in the summer.

Personally I prefer staying away from traditional texts for MIS as they tend to be fairly outdated as far as methodologies go and sometimes deviate to specific systems. There is also the question of context as MIS in Business vs Healthcare vs Computer Science vs IT/IS have subtle but stark differences.

Regardless of which you end up picking a case study approach is what I have found useful tying back to the practical vs theoretical approach.

I will second Rachel’s recommendation on Kroenke’s Using MIS (we use the 6th edition).  I really like the case studies, in-class projects, and the ethics scenarios that accompany each chapter.  We use this text for our upper level, introductory course including one section that is online.

Best Wishes,

I’ve taught a number of on-line sections with Blackboard LMS of  Introduction to MIS using  Effy Oz's  sixth edition of “Management Information Systems” - Cengage gives you ample online instructor and student additional resources.  Highly recommend.
