Message from dthibeau@post03.curry.edu

Good afternoon all,

I realize that similar questions have been posted before, but this time I’ll seeking help from colleges and universities with less than 5,000 FTE.  We’re trying to see if we are “right sized” with respect to others in terms of support staff for technology.  If you’d respond I’d greatly appreciate it and I’d be happy to post a summary of the responses.  Please indicate the number of full time (include part time help as a decimal equivalent of a full timer based on the number hours per week they work).  DO NOT include student workers in any area other than “Student Workers” even if they help to support the other specific areas.

Approximate FTE of the student population:

For items 1-10 please consider the IT or Technology Department only, not any other departments.

1.       Networking Staff (including hardware, software, wireless, etc.):

2.       Systems Support (including Operating systems, servers, etc.):

3.       Programming or Application Support:

4.       Database Support:

5.       Help Desk Support:

6.       Media/Lab Support:

7.       Telecommunications:

8.       Administrative Support:

9.       Student Workers:

10.   Other (please indicated what their role might be):

For this final item, please consider all technical support staff not in the IT or Technology Department.

11.   Instructional Technologist:

12.   All other Technical Support Employees:

Thanks in advance!  Your help and support means a lot to me.

Dennis Thibeault

CIO, Curry College

Hi, Dennis. The EDUCAUSE Core Data Service has data to address this question. In the interests of saving time your colleagues' time, here are the data. 392 US non-specialized institutions with 5,000 or fewer FTEs were generous enough to contribute data in 2011, including 57 colleges that, like Curry, are BA General. Here are the averages and medians for both groups for all the staffing data in the Core Data Service. (The totals for staff and students are the last two lines in the table.) I hope this is helpful. Susan, This is exactly what I was hoping to end up with. THANK YOU so much for providing it, and also thank you to those who also responded. Dennis
And this is where I, as Susan's disinterested colleague, encourage you to submit data next time around!

See my answers below. As an art (creative and performing) university the comparisons may be a little off in the outside IT category.
