Oct. 4 NCSAM Webcast Archive Available
If you were not able to join the October 4 EDUCAUSE Live! webinar on Cybersecurity as a Shared Responsibility, I highly recommend viewing the archived recording, which is now available online: http://net.educause.edu/live1127
Consider sharing this resource with your staff during a brown bag session as part of National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM). You’ll find a facilitator kit included as part of the EDUCAUSE Event Planning Kit: http://www.educause.edu/wiki/Content_Facilitator_Kit
Or simply have an informal discussion with campus colleagues about some of the interesting points addressed during today’s webinar:
- Cyber threats come from many actors: Nation States, organized crime, hackers/activists, and insiders. How can we help people understand not only the constantly evolving risks that come with using the Internet, but also the importance of practicing safe online behavior?
- There are 80 million unique borrowers in the U.S. Department of Education’s Financial Student Aid ecosystem and FSA considers itself the 7th or 8th largest bank in the United States. The Federal Student Aid system has become a primary target for web based attacks. Soon each privileged user of FSA data will be required to use two-factor authentication tokens.
- Information security is fundamentally a matter of risk management. As a component of an enterprise risk management strategy, institutions must consider how they will protect cyber assets in the same way that they develop a risk management approach to protect human assets and physical assets.
- Security Awareness is an ongoing need and based on an ever changing audience. How will your institution raise awareness, educate users, and provide appropriate training for faculty, staff, and students?
Finally, please remember that Data Privacy Day is January 28, 2012 (www.dataprivacyday.org). It’s not too early to start planning additional campus security and privacy awareness activities!
