October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month
Dear Colleagues,
As co-chair of the EDUCAUSE & Internet2 Higher Education Information Security Council (HEISC), and on behalf of my fellow HEISC co-chairs—Larry Conrad (outgoing) and Peter Murray (incoming)—I am pleased to remind all of you that
October marks the annual observance of National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM).
For the ninth consecutive year, HEISC is partnering with the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and other public/private partners to promote cybersecurity awareness this October.
Here are several ways for you and your institution to show support while creating a culture of cyber safety and security at your institution:

Here are several ways for you and your institution to show support while creating a culture of cyber safety and security at your institution:

- Read What College Administrators Can Do…, a page with NCSAM activities you can do in less than an hour to all year round: http://www.staysafeonline.org/ncsam/get-involved/college-administrators
- Get involved in the Stop.Think.Connect. campaign, which offers a free online toolkit containing downloadable materials and links to additional resources:http://stopthinkconnect.org/
- Share the 2006-2011 student poster and video contest winnersor promote the 2013 contest: http://www.youtube.com/user/SecurityVideoContest and https://www.facebook.com/VideoPosterContest
- Conduct a cybersecurity awareness or training session for the staff in your IT organization
Leadership matters and I hope you will join us in doing our part as CIOs to increase awareness and improve cybersecurity on each of our campuses and across the higher education community. In the interest of protecting our constituents and institutional reputation, as well as our economic and national security, this month serves to remind us that we can Achieve Cybersecurity Together.
