This question may be somewhat far afield for the CIO list, but does your institution prohibit assignments in advance of the first day of a course (online or face-to-face)? Brad,

I took the liberty of forwarding on your question to the Educause Blended & Online learning list. Maybe they have some thoughts.

Brad, We not encourage nor discourage assignments in advance of the first day. I am not aware of any faculty that make the work "required" prior to the first day of classes. Many of our faculty add things to their syllabi as suggestions to prepare for class including reading material posted within the LMS. Dennis
Brad,

Yes.  We've had issues in the past, but have made it clear that for students there can be no commitments on them before the first day of the course.
