Good afternoon…

Just wondering what others are using for plagiarism detection and if you think the service is worth it.

Thanks

Jim

We use Turnitin.com.  Our faculty and students have been very happy with it as the students can do a pre-check before they submit their materials.  We have also educated our faculty on how to use it to avoid the copyright and FERPA issues that often concern University attorneys.

Jim,

We've used Turnitin as well for years.  Everyone seems happy with it.  They like the integration with Blackboard as well.

Likewise. Pepperdine uses Turnitin and we are happy thus far.

Jim,

Good evening! We are a Blackboard Learn client and are using the included Safe Assign. I'm sure it's not Turnitin, but it does appear to work for us.

Best regards,

Jim and All,

Skidmore College uses SafeAssign through Blackboard Learn 9.1 SP7. Our faculty and students are more pleased with it this semester after a bump in the road last semester.  Performance issues slowed the service down in December frustrating a lot of folks. A significant backlog of papers impacted turnaround time for submissions. This was quickly addressed by Blackboard in the form of increased server capacity. We encouraged our faculty to keep using it and so far all has gone smoothly with very quick turnaround time.

Using this plagiarism checking tool has, in some instances changed the way faculty are grading papers and re-thinking writing assignments. How has this impacted your faculty?

I just had a discussion with a faculty member this week about how she is using SafeAssign in a hybrid course to educate students about plagiarism.  She demonstrates how the program works and shows how it not only picks up direct quotes but also paraphrased text.  She also lets them run drafts of their papers through SafeAsign and view the results,  before final submission for grading.  She says using it in this way has helped students understand what it means to plagiarize.  Her problem now is to get them to stop using long quotes although she is happy to see them surrounded in quotation marks!

As you explore plagiarism detection services, consider the importance for your institution to be able to opt-out from contributing you school documents to a global document repository used for plagiarism comparisons by all clients of the service.

Years ago when we were evaluating TurnItIn.com and SafeAssignment, our University Legal Office required us to select a service that would only store papers submitted by our students, faculty and staff on a private institutional document repository that would only be used for UIC plagiarism comparisons. In addition, we needed the ability to take our institutional document database with us and remove it from the service when we terminate the service.

SafeAssignment (a private company, then) could meet these intellectual property requirements, while TurnItIn.com could not, so we went with SafeAssignment, which we still use, now that is included with Blackboard Learn.

My understanding today is that TurnItIn.com has added options to their service to deal with institutional-only vs. Institutional and global document repositories, as well as other intellectual property issues and policies that a given school might have, but you may want to double check that with them and with any other service that you evaluate.

We have recently been exploring turnitin and an interesting point is that it technically is not a plagiarism detector-- it finds passages that appear elsewhere.  So something that is cited properly can be detected by it (you can correct for direct quotes).  This isn't surprising as it is not meant to be a tool to grade papers for proper use of whatever style you are using in the assignment (APA, MLA, Chicago etc.).  Keeping that in mind, you have a starting point for a conversation with the student about how to cite in the course or discipline.  Also, this is only 1/3 of their product and they have 2 other compelling products that can be bundled.

We haven't subscribed yet -- more faculty discussion to have.
