As a part of an overall network rebuild at IC, we'll soon be moving our Novell file sharing services over to Windows File Server (WFS) volumes. We're trying to develop a means to provide secure remote (i.e. from outside our firewall) access to those WFS volumes located inside our firewall. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has successfully tackled this issue and is providing secure remote access to WFS files behind a firewall by some means other than VPN.
For purposes of ease of training, use and support, our vision is to make that remote access appear as close to on-campus access as possible through the use of services provided via the local desktop OS - one such example being WebDAV - for volume mapping and access. But we haven't yet found such a service that can be easily distributed across a firewall.
Any and all ideas are appreciated. I'd be happy to summarize responses back to the group if desired. Thanks.
