Rob,

For Ashland University:

$200 per semester for Undergraduates ($400 per year) and $15 per credit hour for Graduate students (typically 6 credits so $90 per class).  My info piece for students on this is at http://www1.ashland.edu/administration/information-technology/tech-fees

There is no charge for printing up to 400 pages per student (or 800 duplex) and after that there is a 5 cent charge per page.  You can pint color on the quota as well but it counts as 2 clicks.  We use pcounter to manage this.

No tech fee.

For printing, students have a limit of free pages, with anything over the limit charged.

Do you charge a tech fee? Tech fee now incorporated into tuition, was 300 up until FY2012. How much ANNUALLY? No longer charged as a separate Fee Do you charge separately for printing? Implementing Pay-for-Print in Fall 2014. Running sample scenarios now for charges (5cents B&W; 10 cents Color). Will likely give all students a starting allowance for so much $ or so many pages base on what the sample scenarios tell us. We also have two specialty printing facilities where students are charged for finished art work based on size and process used to print. Tom Thomas H. For UW-Whitewater:

Yes, we have a student tech fee

No, we do not charge students for printing, but we monitor, alert top 5% that they are using more than their “fair share”, and ask to explain why. We are finding out that some faculty require them to print on-line materials. In some cases, if we can trace heavy printing to a particular course / instructor, we charge academic departments, because we consider it to be “cost reallocation”.

Hope this helps.

For Fayetteville State University

We do have a Tech.Fee.

Students are allotted certain number of pages per semester free (350 pages) and anything more they will have to pay for.  We found this is quite adequate and very few students (1 or 2%) that go over and pay extra towards the end of the semester.

Nick

we have a student tech fee and also we charge for printing. A student get 10 page free each semester then we charge. the system we use for our P4P is PaperCut's print management software

Santa Clara University:

No tech fee
Students receive an initial credit equal to 600 B&W print pages per year free, are charged for printing beyond that. B&W costs $0.08 per page simplex (to match copier costs in the library) and $0.06 per page duplex. Color is $0.15 per page simplex and $0.12 per page duplex. Hi Bob,

Do you charge a tech fee?

Yes, but it’s a shared facilities and technology fee.

How much ANNUALLY?

$300 per year for fulltime and prorated for others.

Do you charge separately for printing?

Yes. We gave 600 free prints per semester for two years and then phased that out with no complaints from students.

Good afternoon, Colleagues! At Wiley College, we charge a technology fee of $595 lper semester ($1190 per year). Our fees covers all technology-related services, including printing.

While we do not charge for printing at this point, escalating costs for imaging (in total) has us reassessing this practice. As such, in January, we will be instituting Print Manager Plus to monitor printing for one semester and make our fee restructure recommendations for the fall 2014 Board meeting.

1) Yes

2) $5 per credit hour (generates about $500,000 per year)

3) No. Students supply their own paper. We pay for the toner. This has proven to be cheaper and simpler than buying and managing software to control printing.

Yes we charge separately for printing. Every student starts with 0 dollars and if they need to print in a "open" lab then they must put money on their account. As for general computer labs, it is part of the class and students are not required to pay for those prints.

Yes, fee is $129/semester for full time students and prorated for others.

No, we do not charge students for printing, but we monitor.  This monitoring only applies to the "public" computer facilities we manage as individual colleges also have printing.

Students will get a "nastygrahm" if they exceed ~500 pages per month (some slack the first month of the semester), here's the message:

Subject: Excessive Printing in Student Computer Centers

This past month you printed {{Pages}} pages in the ITS public Student Computer Centers.

Your amount of printing is excessive when compared to the normal amounts of printing done by your peers in these facilities.

Can you please explain this amount of printing?

Ensure that you are complying with the laser print policy at:

Please help conserve this resource to reduce the impact upon your Student Computer Fee and to keep UNI as green as possible.

We charge for printing, 3 cents per page B/W, 40 cents per page color, we average about 50K pages per week - manage with Papercut (best product around - and cheapest)
Some of the responses have been pretty interesting.  I can't imagine students supplying their own paper - we strictly prohibit that because of the problems with special paper.  I can't imagine "not" having a pay for print environment.

Do you charge separately for printing? No (we do have Papercut as a print management system and we do set quotas - but we are very liberal in adding print page); I do reserve the option in the future of giving an initial quota and then charging for additional pages - but have not done so yet.

At Seton Hall we have a large tech fee for UGs but we also have a 1to1 computing program and the lion’s share of the fee pays for the laptop.

We have used Pharos for years, but just implemented a print management system with XSE group.  XSE manages and maintains the devices, provides the toner, maintenance kits etc. (not paper).

We give FT students (UG or Grad) a 400 page allowance each term they are registered for and charge $.05/page above and beyond for B/W and $.50 for color.  PT students get 200/term

We are working with the SGA to halve the allowances going forward.

Rob,

Our tech fee is assessed by level of attendance and if enrolled in a Totally Online Class

     Full-time:  $260,  Part-time:  $130

      Totally Online Class Fee:  $90/class

We do not charge for printing at this time.  We are using PaperCut as a way to educate our students about the cost, environmental and financial, of printing.  They are allowed to print/copy as needed yet, they see a pop-up window showing their cost of all printing to date and the cost of the current print job.

Rob,

Our tech fee is assessed by semester for full-time students only:

     $80.00

We do not offer printing at this time.  Pay printing is available at the Library

Bob

We charge a tech fee by credit hour.  $10.  So a typical student will pay somewhere around $150 per semester.

We do not currently charge for printing.  We have PaperCut installed and have imposed a limit of 400 prints per semester.  If a student exceeds this amount, their “case” is reviewed to identify any abuse, and discuss better printing practices.  While abuse is a part of the picture, what we are finding is that faculty are imposing an inordinate amount of printing on the students by requiring them to print slides, handouts, and other bits rather than having them done in our print center on campus where there is a lower cost per page.  We are working on education of our faculty.
