Hello all,

I know this is a very odd thing to ask but we have an old legacy system that is running on FileMaker and we need to make some changes while we are in the process  of migrating off of it. Unfortunately, the consulting pool for FileMaker expertise doesn’t appear to be very large and we haven’t had much luck searching through our normal channels so I was hoping that someone else may know of a consulting organization that you would be able/willing to share.

Please email me at tdugas@andrew.cmu.edu if you have anyone that you can share.

Thanks,

Hi,
No, we would not allow anything not owned or contracted by the university to be installed on our network.  We would require an agreement.  In  your case, on our campus, we haven't hit the sign issue with food services, but we've hit other issues with food services and the bookstore and other outsourced relationships.  We work all installations and technology requirements into our agreements.  We carefully review liability / limitations of liability and such.  They would have to meet our security standards.  In one case, involving our golf course, we couldn't come to agreement, and we supported them getting their own Comcast network connection (ha, they've been shocked at the cost....).

The 2013 Emerging Learning Design Conference is just about 2 weeks off and promises to be an exceptional event.  This intimate conference experience provides excellent sessions with sufficient blocks of time for discussion and networking between presentations.   Registration includes all sessions, breakfast, lunch, beverage breaks, and an afternoon snack.  There is also an opportunity to add on the Networking Cocktail Party for a relaxing and enjoyable way to mingle with other conference attendees and special guests.

Aside from our concurrent sessions, workshops, and special Ignite! & Engage! session, our Keynote Presenter this year is Dr. Christopher Hoadley and his presentation is entitled ...

Colleagues,

As you know, last week the higher education IT community suffered a great loss when Dewitt Latimer was tragically taken from us far too early.  The news of Dewitt's accident had a tremendous impact on many of us at Notre Dame, where he spent many years as Deputy CIO before moving on to assume the CIO role at Montana State.

I first met Dewitt nine years ago when I came to Notre Dame for a campus visit and series of interviews.  I must admit that my first impression was something along the lines of "this guy is a little bit crazy."  Over the subsequent nine years, I learned that, yes, he was a little bit crazy, and also that he was brilliant, kind, and intensely devoted to his family, friends and the communities that he served.  That combination of qualities enabled him to make tremendous contributions to IT and higher ed as a change catalyst, thought leader and innovator.

While I agree this issue should be considered mostly non-technical, it seems to me that modifications to the building structure (radio wave transparency) could be legally used in such cases. I remember there was a security specification for preventing radio signals from leaving a building (was that Tempest?). Suppose the walls were impermeable to radio waves, then it seems to me that the university could certainly control whether their own WiFi was active during certain times of day, and prohibit others from installing Wifi in the room. I would guess that retrofitting this radio wave blocking is expensive.  It may even be expensive to build in new construction.

I am seeking feedback from 2-year institutions that are requiring “degree seeking students” that attend their institution to purchase a laptop in order to attend and participate in programs of study.  Our institution is considering this endeavor and are looking for pros and cons by those that have done so (or may have considered doing so but, for whatever reason, decided it was not in their best interest).

Many 4 year institutions have requirements, depending on the program, similar to this but I cannot locate any 2 year institutions that currently require most of their students to purchase a laptop upon acceptance.  Any contacts or leads regarding this are appreciated.

Thank you.

Over the years we have used different products for knowledge base software at Valencia.  While we currently have software in place for our IT FAQs, we are investigating options for our Enrollment Management Center to assist answering questions our students might have regarding the admission and enrollment process.  If you have any information regarding this type of software you are willing to share I would appreciate hearing from you.

Hello all, It came to our attention yesterday that an online hacking zine posted an article about both the MIT hacking event and the EDUCAUSE breach that occurred earlier this year. The information was then shared via Twitter. As we disclosed in our February announcement, the hackers did access EDUCAUSE data in the earlier incident. This recently discovered article includes a dump of EDUCAUSE data. The data set includes information about the .edu domains, such as pre-breach account passwords. Those passwords were deactivated at the time of the breach. The domain contact information has always been publicly available via the .edu Whois directory. There has not been another breach nor is any of the data different than what we had known in February. If you have any questions, please contact me at mmilliron@educause.edu. The process we are implementing is very similar and includes almost identical categories.   We utilize HelpStar to track our Break/Fix and Service Level work, then maintain a project list for the larger projects that must go through our project definition and prioritization process.

Our Service Catalog is in process and we chose to simplify it for Phase I in response to feedback that people don’t know what services we provide and how to request things.

We’re also looking for a product that is mobile aware (phones, tablets, iPads, etc.) and is very secure.  Any ideas?  If you’ve been through a selection, would you be willing to share your RFP or selection criteria?   Thanks in advance.

I am looking for best-in-class / successful examples of integration of libraries, open computer labs, tutoring services (incl. Math lab, writing lab, reading lab etc..) into a common learning area on campus.

I am especially interested in examples that co-locate or integrate DevEd and GenEd services, classrooms, learning spaces, etc…

If you have such a successful example at your institution, or know of one in the US, please kindly share with me offline or online.

It would be interesting to take a close look at how you identify your on-campus students. In my experience, many (most?) campuses do not do a formal “identity proofing” of their on-campus students. Not that it makes the on-line case any easier…

Has anyone had any interaction with them?

The idea of verifying that a student in an online class is the student registered is not new, albeit this is a new twist.  For those who have entirely online programs, and/or a significant number of online courses, how are your institutions handling this issue overall?

Colleagues,

I have a question regarding a very large third party CRM vendor.  As expected, the vendor allows users (leads/applicants) to set up password-protected accounts to enter in general and sensitive information about themselves and eventually use this and additional information to submit an application to the institution.  We (Tech staff) have recently learned that the user passwords are stored in clear text, and are available to the employees in admissions who work on the system.

We have asked about encrypting the passwords, and the vendor has told our folks that no one else in higher education is encrypting passwords and that it would be difficult, leading our admissions/enrollment management folks to question whether or not this is a “best practice”.  I think it is simply being prudent, and that there is...

I'd like to follow-up on that book club idea.  There's a lot of reading on our reading list from Lisa's post:   link to The CIO Bookshelf wiki

Perhaps there's a book you really want to read and would benefit from the motivation and discussion of a group.

Maybe you've already read a book and would like to lead a discussion.

Could we try to create a book club?
For starters, maybe we get one volunteer from the list to pick a book and offer a discussion.  The volunteer leader could post:
"Starting Dec. 1 and for the month of December, I'll lead the E-CIO book club in the reading of "Book Title."  Those interested should contact me.  The group will be limited to the first xx number of responses."

The leader could set a limit, but for a good discussion the group would be limited to 12 or less...

Our Senior Administration has asked why we don't provide "open" wifi access to visitors, people walking through campus, etc. etc.   I've got a host of reasons, but thought I'd inquire as to whether any other schools (especially State/Public schools) provide OPEN WIFI ACCESS.  In short ... I've been asked "Why can't we be like Starbucks?"   :-(

I'd really appreciate any feedback.  Does your school provide open wifi for guests?  We have a process for legitimate guests to get guest accounts and wifi very expediently, but apparently that doesn't go far enough.  I'm concerned about implications of CALEA, risks to University reputation if we have individuals sitting in their car or on a park bench on campus accessing our wifi and doing strange/bad things, etc.

Colleagues- I'd like to hear your thoughts on this one!

As you probably know, Moodlerooms hosts Moodle (and other software) for many colleges, universities, and other types of clients. They've been a good partner to Marylhurst. In recent months, since a leadership change, they have started building proprietary components including proprietary Moodle modules and add-ons.  At Marylhurst we've been careful how we used these proprietary features, keeping an eye on exit. Today I am grateful for that.

Today Moodlerooms announced their acquisition by Blackboard as part of that company's open source strategy. Bb also acquired Netspot, another Moodle partner. There's a suitably worded Open Letter and Statement of Principles on the web site, of course. http://www.blackboard.com/About-Bb/News-Center/Press-Releases.aspx...

I’m reviewing our password reset policy.  Currently our policy is to require users, via password expiration,  to change their password every 60 days.  Based on anecdotal evidence I gathered from faculty and staff who have recently come to Knox from other I believe our reset interval is shorter than most other Colleges and Universities.  However, I have gotten answers that range from 30 days to annually, and a single, “I never had to change my password…”.

We also have complexity and history policies in place, but the one I am most frequently “challenged” on the expiration period.  Would any of you be willing to share what your expiration period is?   If it is 90 days or under would you also share your rationale?

Thanks,

Here's a straw poll question, directed primarily at those whose responsibility includes the care, feeding, and promotion of the campus learning management system (LMS): what, currently, is your primary measure of a successful learning management system (LMS) project? Is it the percentage of faculty using it? I know there are probably a variety of ways you might calculate the success of your LMS. But my question is: what is the **primary** or most valuable way or metric you use? If you could use only one such measure, what would it be? Thanks for mentioning the COREDATA survey.

Could you please tell the list what the plans are for improving the usability of the COREDATA survey's reporting? The download to .csv only method is considerably more cumbersome than the old web options. I used to be able to find quick answers to questions within a few clicks. I guess there is comfort in knowing “we are not alone” in dealing with Adobe license changes – but there is high dissatisfaction (at least on my part…) in the direction their licensing is moving.

We have been long-term CLP customers and have seen:

·         flip-flops from concurrent-use to NO concurrent-use

·         product bundles that have shifted over time, sometimes without much logic.  certain standalone products that are price prohibitive if purchased outside of a bundle with stuff you don’t want or need.

Pardon me if this has already been asked…

I’m curious if other colleges and universities grant admin access to desktop or laptops owned and managed by the college and used by faculty or staff.  We currently install whatever they need for them and maintain an inventory of all software installed.  We track licensing etc.  We are hesitant to give people admin access to their machines, but more and more they want to be able to do installations to demo products, get updates that we may not have installed yet, etc.

Just wondering if we’re being overly restrictive.

Thanks for your feedback, Dennis

I want to preference my question here with a couple of quick notes...

(a) Although I've been following the MOOC trend fairly closely and spent time "observing" the MITx Circuits course, I'm still very much a "learner" in this domain.

(b) Although I think there are possibly more questions than answers when it comes to MOOCs, I find some of the things they are doing very interesting/exciting and I'm also VERY happy to see higher education experiment with new models.

My understanding (but those with more experience should certainly correct me) is that the original concept of Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs) was really about creating learning communities that would openly share knowledge and work as a community to create and participate in a common learning experience.  Wikipedia notes (citing several sources) that there are four core principles associated with MOOCs, which are:

Who, on your campus, makes decisions on what emails are sent to all faculty, staff, or students?
Do you have guidelines and/or policy on what is allowed?
At ISU, the decisions currently are made in IT...which I am not comfortable with..plus, we have no guidelines. As a result, almost anything goes...and we are beginning to get complaints.

Our faculty is interested in exploring alternatives to our current LMS. Has anyone gone through the process of exploring LMS options or actually transitioned to a new system within the last year or so? Would you be willing to share any information that was helpful in making an informed decision?

My fear is that we will not get adequate faculty participation in the evaluation and selection process and a decision may be made that is not in the best interests of the college. It seems that the feature sets of current LMS products are more similar than ever. While not terribly dissatisfied with our current system (Blackboard), we have a twelve year investment in getting comfortable using and supporting it. Changing to a new LMS would be painful, but we are willing to do it if there are strong benefits. Obviously there would be cost savings...
