Hi Randy….. a few years ago, we took a position paper to our IT Governance body (all the VP’s across the Institute) and proposed NOT offering email at all to students.  It was (in our opinion) becoming a dis-service to do it as most by far already arrived here with an email address and this just meant one more to manage, keep track of, forward to someplace they actually looked…….

We had also moved to a “secure message center” model where we provided for everyone – through a web interface, a secure message center where we would put official communications, and we would just send their “preferred email address” (which we collect in Banner) a note telling them there was a message waiting for them (similar to how financial institutions never put payload in the actual email message – but instead authenticate you...

We also have a Concerto-based system.  We’ve been running on it for a few years now.  We implemented using eeePC’s as signage hardware, but switched to RasPIs as soon as they became available in reliable quantities.  We’ve been very happy with the solution; and are eagerly looking forward to version 2 which purports to include support for full motion video.

Good Morning Fellow Colleagues,

I’ve been asked to direct a group of individuals from multiple disciplines, primarily from the administrative side of the house, to perform some analysis of some of our weaker, less efficient workflows.  This “swat” team will interview, watch people work, and really try to understand the current workflow (initially without any preconceived solution in mind) and then work to make things better (some solutions may be IT – software/hardware/technology-related -  some may not).

Has anyone directed this type of committee?  If so, any suggestions?  I realize there’s not much to go on here.   But, for example, some...

While we have not implemented mandatory requirements, we are about to. We are in the process of switching from one LMS to another commencing this fall. Working with the provost we will enforce some basic minimum requirements that all faculty must embrace having to do with course material posted to the course site, assessment rubrics adhered to in assessing student progress and portfolio creation of faculty work. These requirements will go into effect this summer and I will be interested to see how this "forced" use of what is a basic classroom tool by all faculty works. Tom Thomas H. Good day, everyone –

While I realize that there is a PowerFAIDS list I could join, College Board has been a challenge lately, so I thought I’d turn to some of my former CIO colleagues to ask this question.

How many of you are running PowerFAIDS for financial aid and have installed the client on a terminal server or remote desktop server in order to ease the constant client upgrade challenges?  I’m considering this possibility at a client institution to, as mentioned, make client upgrades a bit easier, but also to work around what appear to be some slow WAN link issues – remote clients are operating at a painfully slow pace while local clients are just fine.

Any feedback is much appreciated...

Hello all,

I know this is a very odd thing to ask but we have an old legacy system that is running on FileMaker and we need to make some changes while we are in the process  of migrating off of it. Unfortunately, the consulting pool for FileMaker expertise doesn’t appear to be very large and we haven’t had much luck searching through our normal channels so I was hoping that someone else may know of a consulting organization that you would be able/willing to share.

Please email me at tdugas@andrew.cmu.edu if you have anyone that you can share.

Hi,
No, we would not allow anything not owned or contracted by the university to be installed on our network.  We would require an agreement.  In  your case, on our campus, we haven't hit the sign issue with food services, but we've hit other issues with food services and the bookstore and other outsourced relationships.  We work all installations and technology requirements into our agreements.  We carefully review liability / limitations of liability and such.  They would have to meet our security standards.  In one case, involving our golf course, we couldn't come to agreement, and we supported them getting their own Comcast network connection (ha, they've been shocked at the cost....).

Colleagues,

As you know, last week the higher education IT community suffered a great loss when Dewitt Latimer was tragically taken from us far too early.  The news of Dewitt's accident had a tremendous impact on many of us at Notre Dame, where he spent many years as Deputy CIO before moving on to assume the CIO role at Montana State.

I first met Dewitt nine years ago when I came to Notre Dame for a campus visit and series of interviews.  I must admit that my first impression was something along the lines of "this guy is a little bit crazy."  Over the subsequent nine years, I learned that, yes, he was a little bit crazy, and also that he was brilliant, kind, and intensely devoted to his family, friends and the communities that he served.  That combination of qualities enabled him to make tremendous contributions to IT and higher ed as a change catalyst, thought leader and innovator.

If your school leases computers as part of the normal life-cycle replacement, I would interested to hear how the program is funded at your school.  Is the lease cost extracted up front from departmental budgets, or are departments billed on a schedule (monthly, yearly, etc.)?  If you would be willing to provide information on your process either back to the list or directly to me off-line, I would greatly appreciate your feedback.

While I agree this issue should be considered mostly non-technical, it seems to me that modifications to the building structure (radio wave transparency) could be legally used in such cases. I remember there was a security specification for preventing radio signals from leaving a building (was that Tempest?). Suppose the walls were impermeable to radio waves, then it seems to me that the university could certainly control whether their own WiFi was active during certain times of day, and prohibit others from installing Wifi in the room. I would guess that retrofitting this radio wave blocking is expensive.  It may even be expensive to build in new construction.

1.        Do you have a Technology Fee in place today at your institution?  If so how long has the fee been in place?

2.       What is the amount of the fee?

3.       How is the fee constructed is it by semester, by credit hour etc…?

Leah,

Thanks for mentioning the COREDATA survey.

Could you please tell the list what the plans are for improving the usability of the COREDATA survey's reporting? The download to .csv only method is considerably more cumbersome than the old web options. I used to be able to find quick answers to questions within a few clicks. Now finding simple answers to questions like "I wonder how X institution does that?" takes significantly more work.

We are in the early planning stages for a new academic building for our business department.  I am part of a small group tasked with picking the latest and greatest classroom technology for this new building.  We have been directed to make sure we are ‘looking forward’ so that the technology can be maintained at a high level over time.  We realize that there will be things in the future that are currently unknown but want to be as prepared as possible.  I have been asked to find a few schools that have recently completed new academic buildings to give us some advice and recommendations.  Ideally, we would like to find someone that would be willing to talk to us about their experience.

Pardon me if this has already been asked…

I’m curious if other colleges and universities grant admin access to desktop or laptops owned and managed by the college and used by faculty or staff.  We currently install whatever they need for them and maintain an inventory of all software installed.  We track licensing etc.  We are hesitant to give people admin access to their machines, but more and more they want to be able to do installations to demo products, get updates that we may not have installed yet, etc.

Just wondering if we’re being overly restrictive.

Thanks for your feedback, Dennis

I want to preference my question here with a couple of quick notes...

(a) Although I've been following the MOOC trend fairly closely and spent time "observing" the MITx Circuits course, I'm still very much a "learner" in this domain.

(b) Although I think there are possibly more questions than answers when it comes to MOOCs, I find some of the things they are doing very interesting/exciting and I'm also VERY happy to see higher education experiment with new models.

My understanding (but those with more experience should certainly correct me) is that the original concept of Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs) was really about creating learning communities that would openly share knowledge and work as a community to create and participate in a common learning experience.  Wikipedia notes (citing several sources) that there are four core principles associated with MOOCs, which are:

(1) The first principle is...

I have searched the archives and cannot find anything since 2006 so thought I might poll folks again....
Who, on your campus, makes decisions on what emails are sent to all faculty, staff, or students?
Do you have guidelines and/or policy on what is allowed?
At ISU, the decisions currently are made in IT...which I am not comfortable with..plus, we have no guidelines. As a result, almost anything goes...and we are beginning to get complaints.
Help?

Our faculty is interested in exploring alternatives to our current LMS. Has anyone gone through the process of exploring LMS options or actually transitioned to a new system within the last year or so? Would you be willing to share any information that was helpful in making an informed decision?

My fear is that we will not get adequate faculty participation in the evaluation and selection process and a decision may be made that is not in the best interests of the college. It seems that the feature sets of current LMS products are more similar than ever. While not terribly dissatisfied with our current system (Blackboard), we have a twelve year investment in getting comfortable using and supporting it. Changing to a new LMS would be painful, but we are willing to do it if there are strong benefits. Obviously there would be cost savings...

In the 3- to 5-year tech plan we are developing, we want to say something about training requirements.

For IT technical staff, what do you budget annually per person for professional development (including courses, workshops, trainers brought in, travel, conferences)? I'm assuming that not every single person gets training every year, but some people go twice in a year, etc., and we want to express the budget needed as per technical person per year.

In an ideal world (not a world in which money is NO object) what would you budget per technical person per year ?

Thanks.

Folks -

In two weeks I will be giving a presentation to the academic deans and various vice provosts on OIT's (Ofc of IT) 5  year plan. This is basically a budget for major upgrades on the radar as well as needs driven by our university Strategic Plan.  However, as we all know, making these plans actionable at the level of executive and senior management is a greater challenge. I'm struggling with how to make this extraordinarily complex environment digestible to folks who lack deep knowledge without simplifying to the point of cartoon-like explanations. My goal is helping them understand the trade-offs around customization, the transactional costs of poor business process design, the needed skill sets to address looming integration needs, and the multifactorial  issues around data management without watching their eyes glaze over.  I meet with these folks weekly (as a group) and so have a familair relationship with them...
