Hi Dewitt,

Unfortunately, we don't have any experience with a stadium that size but the following article will likely be, at least, interesting to you if not useful.

Good luck!

Theresa,

Currently our Client Services division has 8 FTEs, including myself as the Director.  One of those FTEs is in charge of our Lab, Classroom computer management.

The other 6 have the title of "Desktop Support Analyst" at the very least.  In addition, they have other roles including Service Desk Student Manager, Knowledge Base Manager, Printer Specialist, etc.

Each day is broken into half (including the lunch hour) and each portion of the day, two of these six are scheduled to answer the Service Desk Phone, respond to emails coming in and work active tickets.

The other four then are spending their time on user support, training, knowledge base article authoring, printer troubleshooting, one-on-one visits and consultation, reimaging machines, just-in-time training, and...

Mark – we started with * quite some time ago, and found it did not have the features and functionality it needs for an enterprise deployment. So, we evolved to sipXecs, see www.sipfoundry.org/why-sipxecs. It is very affordable (even downright inexpensive), comes with a site license, is OS agnostic, and we have already transitioned about 2,500 of our 7,500 total phones.

We can provide additional info, if you'd like.

We are not using the Internet2 Net+ CrashPlan service. In part because we needed it before that service was ready and in part because our goal is to have CrashPlan as a failsafe only for those that need it, not for general use.

Our contract gives us unlimited storage on CrashPlan, so we don't have a need to manage quotas.

I am contemplating proposing a "SaaS Data Integration Surcharge" that would be a fixed percentage of the upfront/recurring costs incurred by the unit contracting with an outside vendor - for services that need data exchange in addition to simple authentication.

Do any of you have such surcharges? If yes, how much?

Thanks in advance for your help/advice.

A reminder that the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative’s Spring Focus Session will have as its theme “Learning and the MOOC.”  Over the past year, the massive open online course (MOOC) has emerged as a significantly different course model. But how robust is the MOOC as a vehicle for learning?

My purely personal and "gut" response:  This policy appears carefully to avoid providing any assurance or expectation of privacy or reliable service to users while asserting users' responsibility for any use to which the institution may object.  In contrast it reserves authority of the institution for virtually any access to data in individual email accounts while absolving the institution of any responsibility ("Users utilize such Resources at their own risk").  I presume this is within legal bounds, but I would expect users to be dissatisfied and/or adopt external email services whenever possible.

At the University of Wisconsin-Parkside we are getting a lot of mileage with Qualtrics. It is normally known for its survey capabilities but it is also a wonderful Web form tool. I am not certain how deep its capabilities extend relative to deep-level coding but if an institution were to look to replace simple and mid-level forms, this is a great tool.

We are looking into saving funds by cutting down on the number of printers on campus.  We have a lot of people running ink-jet printers and/or small laser printers in their offices.  We feel we can save a lot of money by having a central printer or copier that can print for everyone in the department to use and decrease the number of small printers.

I am interested in seeing policy statements on who qualifies to have a printer in their office instead of having to use a central printer within the department.  I am sure we will get push-back from those who claim confidentiality, wasted time walking to the printer, etc.   So, do you have a policy that states certain ranks of faculty and/or administration may have an office printer and everyone else have to walk a few feet?

If you would be kind enough to share your policies and/or thoughts, it will be greatly appreciated.

It does seem logical, but my experience indicates that there are factors that have to be considered with any charge-back model.  As a result, over the years, I've tried to eliminate all charge-backs.  Would your university commit to the budget without allowing exceptions?

One factor to consider is competition, in terms of perceived price-per-service.  I use the word perceived thoughtfully, as folks outside central IT, without any deep understanding of technology, can analyze costs very differently from an experienced IT view.  If your university doesn't enforce a centralized view of cost analysis, the price of your service and the price of what might appear to be the same service provided by an outside company can be compared by the client community.  For example, a few years back we had charge-back long distance telephone service at the same time long-distance calls could be made on purchased calling cards.  So the community...

In the 3- to 5-year tech plan we are developing, we want to say something about training requirements.

For IT technical staff, what do you budget annually per person for professional development (including courses, workshops, trainers brought in, travel, conferences)? I'm assuming that not every single person gets training every year, but some people go twice in a year, etc., and we want to express the budget needed as per technical person per year.

In an ideal world (not a world in which money is NO object) what would you budget per technical person per year ?

Thanks.

Folks -

In two weeks I will be giving a presentation to the academic deans and various vice provosts on OIT's (Ofc of IT) 5  year plan. This is basically a budget for major upgrades on the radar as well as needs driven by our university Strategic Plan.  However, as we all know, making these plans actionable at the level of executive and senior management is a greater challenge. I'm struggling with how to make this extraordinarily complex environment digestible to folks who lack deep knowledge without simplifying to the point of cartoon-like explanations. My goal is helping them understand the trade-offs around customization, the transactional costs of poor business process design, the needed skill sets to address looming integration needs, and the multifactorial  issues around data management without watching their eyes glaze over.  I meet with these folks weekly (as a group) and so have a familair relationship with them...

Good afternoon, Colleagues! I have a question for you. While there are many of us out there using "clickers" for group testing and attendance, I am wondering if there is another "tool" that could be used with the cell phones. Not all of our new faculty have laptops...but everyone has a computer. At the end of the two-day orientation, they want to give the new folk a test with instant feedback, following the same model as when using the "clickers." Suggestions? Thanks, in advance! A vendor would like to hear from CIOs and IT leaders about the Educause Conference.  Many of us appreciate the contribution of vendors to the value of the conference.  I, for one, make an effort to visit and spend time on the vendor floor.

In your view,  what would you like to see from IT hardware/software vendors at the Educause Conference?

For a company that is new to higher ed, what should they know about presenting to and reaching out to campus IT leaders in a conference setting?

Issue #4: Improving the Institution's Operational Efficiency through Information Technology

Today, using information technology to improve operational efficiency is no longer just desirable; it has become an imperative due to the ever-shrinking resources brought about by the current economic downturn. Most institutions have many of the required technologies (e.g., workflow, electronic forms, and digital signing) in place, but not everyone has broadly restructured business processes to take advantage of the new technologies.

____

Continuing our summer discussion of the Educause Top 10 issues, let's move to Issue #4, stated above.  What are the obstacles that stop you from fully implementing or deriving benefit from IT designed to improve efficiency?  One of our biggest challenges has been to find the technologies that are affordable and easy to implement.

At Trinity University we have been using Google Apps as our email system for about three years for student, faculty, and staff email. We have recently been informed by our Faculty Senate that they are receiving complaints re the system that involve lost mail, mail delivered extraordinarily late and some aesthetic complaints with the interface. They are unable to speak to the magnitude of the complaints as they report many users seem very happy with Google Apps. The students seem to like the system and have made no mention of  problems, and yes, they do use email a lot!

If you have implemented Google Apps on your campus are you receiving such complaints and what is the magnitude of them?

Good morning!

I’m not sure how this topic has arisen again, but, I concur with Steve!

Although I’ve not been on the list as long as some, during the years I have been subscribed, there have been only a small handful of times in which “marketing” has been a nuisance. In return for these moments, we have created a win-win scenario. For us, we often times receive insights from a larger community regarding what is taking place outside our walls. For the vendor, they have an expanded opportunity to learn about the current issues, thoughts, and actions that are at the forefront of the modern college/university. Since we do use consultants, software, and other services to supplement our environments, I cannot see how this latter fact is a bad thing.

Hi all, Yesterday, I had a conversation with a professor (no from PLNU) that went something like this: Sam: What do you think about faculty development programs? Prof: Well, pedagogy is a very personal thing. If it is introduced by faculty to other faculty, it may work. But since it is a very personal matter, I don't think any faculty should be asked to do anything they do not feel is beneficial in their setting… This professor continues by describing why it is so personal, but never once did the professor talk about the student. So my question to you all is – Is pedagogy a personal matter or should a university encourage a certain standard? Or maybe it is a bit too sensitive an issue to discuss in public. Is this too much of the "elephant in the room"? I come from the public sector (healthcare, hospitality, retail and ecommerce). In industry, there are certain levels of freedom within each profession but there are certain standards that the company insists. For example: A...

Greetings all, Based on anecdotal evidence and vague recollections, it is my impression that a number of years ago there was a trend towards hiring private sector business-people into higher ed CIO jobs. Recently (at least within the past year or so), the overwhelming majority of higher ed CIO position postings I've seen state that higher ed experience is preferred. Additionally, a Master's degree is increasingly becoming a requirement, and a terminal degree, such as a doctorate, stated as preferred. Out of not-so-idle curiosity, is the impression of a shift in the hiring of business-people back to those with higher ed experience just an illusion brought on by faulty memory? :-) If not, has anyone researched and documented this?
