Colleagues:
We are in the early stages of planning for an Identity Management System. We plan to do an RFI for Consulting Services (preferably a vendor-agnostic firm) to help us scope out the project and write an RFP for a system and implementation services.
Have any of you written such an RFI they'd be willing to share on or off the list?
Thank you in advance,

I've inherited an events calendar project about mid way through.  Right now the front runner is a product called Localist.  They have a decent base of higher education institutions, although I'm not familiar with them.  I'd be interested in feedback from schools using Localist (off list is fine) as well as hearing from other schools that have an event calendar solution they love, adore, and/or that meets their institutional needs well.

Colleagues and Friends,

Our library has a collection of locally produced 16mm movies.  We would like to get these into digital format?

Does anyone know of equipment that we can purchase to do this?  Otherwise, is there a service which you have found helpful?

Thank you and Season’s Blessings.

Dear Colleagues,

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving break. I've surface-searched our listserv archives but didn't find much info related to my following question.

With many Password Manager solutions readily available (e.g. 1Password, KeePass, Lastpass, etc.) for consumers, what steps (if any) have you taken to guide your users on selecting the best solution(s) that meet their needs, are easy for them to use WHILE at the same time, ensure protection of your systems?

All, I'm hoping someone else has seen this issue and been able to work with the folks at Linden Lab to resolve it. We route all our outgoing traffic out on a single IP address. Liden Labs apparently restricts you to 5 account creations from a single IP address, so our students and faculty can't create accounts on campus. The work around has been to tell students and faculty they have to create the accounts at home, but that doesn't solve the problem for our residential students (and it's far from optimal on top of that). We are not in a position to change our IP routing, so I've put a ticket in with Linden Labs about this. If anyone here knows a more direct route or what magic words I will need to say to get Linden Labs to lift this restriction for our IP address, that would be very helpful. Greetings!  I was wondering if someone could point me to some good sources for Service Level Agreements for units/departments/areas so semi-autonomous unites.  These are areas that not directly under central IT for support but they do receive various services (Internet, ERP system access, print and file server, print quotas, phone, etc.).  They may do their own IT procurement or even have their own IT support staff.  Since the funding and support model for these areas is much different from the majority of IT customers we support I would imagine that the SLA covering these entities would differ from our the SLAs with groups having tighter links to IT.  I have a high level MOU in place but we really need to tease out the details of our support arrangement through SLAs.

Thanks

Good morning,

We allow students to retain their college email address after graduating.  It helps to stay in touch with them after they leave the campus.  However, we are starting to see more duplications occur because our email address standard is the first initial and last name.  Our email administrator is very creative, but as our student base continues to grow over time it will become a bigger issue.

What format do you use for student email addresses?

Please share how your institution manages around duplicate student email addresses if you use first initial and last name?

Is anyone using the student ID number as their student email address?

I know....we are a little behind the times but we are finally migrating from GroupWise 2012 to Office 365 in the coming months.  Is anyone willing to share their experiences and tools that they recommend we look at for doing the migration of mailboxes.   In looking at the tools that exist, we see a cost of between $6 to $10 per mailbox using a commercial solution that we will probably use for faculty and staff email accounts, but we cannot afford this for 1,600 and 1,750 alumni mailboxes.

Thanks.

The University of South Carolina is considering a change to our Telco/Network cost recovery model which has traditionally been tied to Telco use only. We all know this “land-line” based model is diminishing, and that the growing technology model is converging towards a network only model.  I would appreciate anyone sharing what model (Best Practice) you use if different from the traditional “pay for actual usage” model.

I have only recently joined this group, so I am responding quite late.  We use Finish Line from Jenzabar.  It has 2 components:

1.     A convenient way for faculty or staff to notify our Director of Retention of a student perceived to be a retention risk

2.     A set of customizable analytics that provides our Director of Retention with an on-demand look at students in red (high risk), yellow (moderate risk), and green (little or no risk) categories

We are very happy with it and are most happy about the fact that, since implementation, we are talking with many more students.

My understanding is that they are currently doing some integration with other systems such as Banner and...

Hi all,

I feel so embarrassed to ask this.  I’m looking for a list of questions that you may have asked of your faculty regarding technology.

This request came from a faculty committee that wishes to survey the entire faculty.  They are unable to articulate a goal or objective for the survey.  I think they are interested to find out what faculty members think that they want or need to improve their ability to teach, whether it’s in the classroom or helping them prepare.  Pretty vague – I know. Sorry!

In my experience when FMP is scaled on a large basis seems to become a bit unmanageable.

Dear Colleagues,

At Pepperdine University, our divisions of Student Affairs and Athletics have expressed a need to track faculty, staff and student attendance at their respective events. The attendance data would then be cross-referenced with certain demographic data in our PeopleSoft system for various purposes including event marketing and promotion.

I am interested in learning if and how your institution handles this function. Do you use a scanner or some 3rd party device to record the attendee's campus ID number and then import the data into your administrative system?

Look forward to reading your process.

Colleagues,

I presume some of you, like us, were surprised by IBM's recent change in SPSS licensing that now specifically prohibits use of the product for university operations or university administration purposes under the terms of the academic license, limiting use to teaching and "non-commercial academic research."

Does anyone have any innovative solutions to share regarding this dilemma?  Any particular products that are good target solutions for replacement of SPSS in these situations?

We presume the potential solution space includes:

1.  Alternative tools for needs that don't require SPSS-level capabilities (e.g., statistical tools in Excel, etc.).

2.  Examination of alternative products with advanced statistical capabilities.

3. Use of non-academic SPSS licenses for these...

One concern with not providing an email account is the possibility that the university could get blacklisted.  With the number of emails this University sends out to students, we’ve actually been blacklisted by mail providers that students forward to (and we do provide email accounts to students, but allow forwarding as well).  I’m curious if David has run into this.  By providing an email account, we work with the mail provider to ensure university messages do not get blacklisted to the university sponsored mail provider.

Greetings,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I know that this is more of a regulatory safety issue, however since most of you are probably managing the PBX or IP Telephony, I am certain you have been involved in the discussion.  Our routing of 911 requires that the user dial 9-911 to get connected to the local emergency services.  This is a recent change where previously users were able to dial either 9-911 or 911.

Does your PBX routing allow for 911 to be dialed directly or does the routing require dialing 9-911?

Hi,
No, we would not allow anything not owned or contracted by the university to be installed on our network.  We would require an agreement.  In  your case, on our campus, we haven't hit the sign issue with food services, but we've hit other issues with food services and the bookstore and other outsourced relationships.  We work all installations and technology requirements into our agreements.  We carefully review liability / limitations of liability and such.  They would have to meet our security standards.  In one case, involving our golf course, we couldn't come to agreement, and we supported them getting their own Comcast network connection (ha, they've been shocked at the cost....).
