Dear Colleagues: Registration for the 12th ACM/IEEE-Computer Society Joint Conference on Digital Libraries is now open, and available from https://www.regonline.com/jcdl2012. A preliminary schedule and other conference-related details are available from http://www.jcdl2012.info. JCDL 2012 is a major international forum focusing on digital libraries and associated technical, practical, organizational, and social issues. JCDL encompasses the many meanings of the term digital libraries, including (but not limited to) new forms of information institutions and organizations; operational information systems with all manner of digital content; new means of selecting, collecting, organizing, distributing, and accessing digital content; theoretical models...

I'm not an expert on PCI legal requirements, but from a technology/support perspective, having large numbers of dedicated telecommunications connections, and having to house the equipment somewhere, provide access to vendors, etc., is a pain in the neck. There are costs no matter what; the actual ISP costs for that level of traffic are probably much lower than the support costs for managing the environments and connections on campus. Also, at a previous campus, I witnessed vendor after vendor who insisted they needed their own dedicated fiber network to support building access, energy management, etc., even though they were transmitting data at no more than 96 kbs! Either leasing them our fiber or wasting conduit space to pull their own seemed to be a terrible idea.
When we designed and built the infrastructure for UC Merced (we opened in 2005), we dedicated fiber and small switches to build a low-cost parallel network to...

Hello,

Ringling College is looking at taking the big step and moving to a one card system. The main motivator is access control on campus. Currently we have some Blackboard and another key fob system that was installed by our local locksmith company. We wanted to see if anyone has gone through a selection process lately and would be willing to share their RFP. Also, if anyone has a good list of possible vendors that would help.

Thanks,

Colleges,

I have been asked by the VP of ITS to reach out to our membership communities and ask if anybody could recommend a dynamic futuristic speaker in regards to computing and technology of the future.

Our university provides what we describe as Todd Lecture series (described below) to the Norwich and surrounding communities.

The Todd Lecture Series is named in honor of US Army retired Maj. Gen. and Norwich President Emeritus W. Russell Todd, ‘50, and his wife, Carol, in gratitude for their dedicated service to the University. With this series, Norwich reaches out to bring important, significant lecturers to campus.

Wondering if anyone has a policy or risk assessment on use of their college network (wired port, routing, and Internet connection) by 3rd party vendors for transmission of encrypted credit and debit card transactions. We've got a vendor who wants to set up a "self service" cafe in our Library. Students would swipe their credit/debit card on their equip, and presto, they get a sandwich out of a machine. The vendor wants us to provide a wired connection to the Internet for their machine. We feel the vendor should pay for their own separate ISP connection and wired pathway, but wondered if others have a risk assessment, policy, SLA, data, or advice on it.

Thanks in advance for any input,
- John

Good morning. It has been almost six months since Pearson announced OpenClass, their new, innovative and free cloud-based socially-intelligent hosted learning management system. Has anyone put it in production? How well is OpenClass working at institutions running real live classes this Spring? Also, I find OpenClass' social networking capabilities and its seamless integration with Google Apps very appealing, not just for Teaching & Learning applications, but also for non-teaching everyday University applications requiring a simple yet powerful environment to facilitate private, semi-private or public organic communication and collaboration. Is anyone using OpenClass to deploy academic social networks on campus? How well is it working as a modern collaboration enabler? I plan to activate OpenClass at UIC very soon and evaluate it not only as an additional LMS alternative to hopefully make available to the campus in the not-too-distant future, but also as a tool to facilitate...

Good Afternoon -

In efforts to provide the best possible support for online courses, I'm interested in hearing how others are accomplishing this.

Does your institution outsource the online course LMS?

Do you provide 24 hour tech support?

Do you use an answering service, helpdesk phone line, online ticket system or email for during/after hours support of your LMS?

What impact do you see on bandwidth?

What was the biggest hurdle during implementing an online class?

Any additional information is welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Ethan, Patrick and others, for an enlightening discussion.

We've talked about the merits of different open source licenses, and the bigger picture of "open" (thanks, Patrick).  We've shared our concerns about a shrinking vendor market.  We've noticed that Blackboard is moving in new directions for profitability as their LMS market shifts.  I think we are seeing the same thing in the new Ellucian (Sungard + Datatel) blend; the ERP market is shifting, and Ellucian is seeking new directions for profitability.
.
Patrick noted:
"...understanding of openness itself (the issues previously listed and what enables those) and thus have no means to assess it, e.g. what metrics/criteria do campuses apply to identify and measure transparency or community?"

We plan on rebuilding our web site from the ground up and would like to outsource the job.  I could have sworn I’ve seen people list the names of vendors they’ve used for that purpose, but I guess I haven’t been able to come up with the right search string.   We’re looking for a company that can work with branding designs that we provide and build a completely new web site.  If you’ve had good luck with a vendor, I’d appreciate their name (nationwide).  And I guess if you’ve had bad luck with a vendor, I’d like to know that, too.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Colleagues- I'd like to hear your thoughts on this one!

As you probably know, Moodlerooms hosts Moodle (and other software) for many colleges, universities, and other types of clients. They've been a good partner to Marylhurst. In recent months, since a leadership change, they have started building proprietary components including proprietary Moodle modules and add-ons.  At Marylhurst we've been careful how we used these proprietary features, keeping an eye on exit. Today I am grateful for that.

Today Moodlerooms announced their acquisition by Blackboard as part of that company's open source strategy. Bb also acquired Netspot, another Moodle partner. There's a suitably worded Open Letter and Statement of Principles on the web site, of course. http://www.blackboard.com/About-Bb/News-Center/Press-Releases.aspx...

Seton Hall University is in the process of implementing Cogos as the principle reporting tool for our Banner ERP system.  The project is intended to replace the existing hodgepodge of operational reports developed in different tools against different databases and have a unified system of Cognos reports against the Banner Operational Data Store (ODS).  Our functional and technical teams are somewhat behind the project timeline, in part because we are learning Cognos as we go along.  We are looking for a consultant to help us move this project along.  Tasks for which we need assistance include configuring and managing Cognos security (following the fund/org security in Banner and ODS), designing the Cognos portal for end user access to their reports, and redesigning/redeploying our existing operational reports in Cognos.  A Cognos consultant who can assist in these areas and who has experience in higher education...

Every now and again on this listserv a subscriber writes in with a question related to the particular books and/or literacies and/or education that it takes to be a CIO. I was wondering, in light of recent articles on CNN, Douglas Rushkoff's call to "Program or Be Programmed," the popularity of CodeAcademy, and even Mayor Blumberg's commitment to learn a little about coding culture (at least as reported by CNN http://www.cnn.com/2012/01/12/opinion/rushkoff-write-code/index.html ) whether anyone has any new insights to share on this topic. Is coding a new basic literacy that all student's should be exposed to? What role does/should it play in the formation of CIOs? Luke...

Here are some questions I ask myself about mobility and Apps. Could a business or academic institution survive without any mobile apps? Do mobile apps create a competitive advantage for the business or institution? Do faculty and students select the business or institution because of how apps were made? Do they compare business, academic, and institutional apps to those existing in the wild? How do our apps stand up against those developed in the wild? Is having a mobile app essential to providing a quality education? Does limiting app development to any one solution make the quality of app better? Should IT create fertile app development environment where both academic and business interests combine? How do we make this happen? Is it worth the effort and cost? Can IT provide access to past code and make sure existing data is maintained so Apps grow and die with enthusiasm? Today one of the most popular courses offered in computer science is app development. Look at Stanford's...

Greetings,

I have been asked by our faculty to relax our restrictions on our SPAM appliance.  Their complaint is that many attachments that come through our e-mail system that are sent by their colleagues from other universities are blocked due to inappropriate content.  We are a very conservative Catholic university and the "powers that be" have been adamant about keeping the SPAM appliance very restricted.  Much research is done here in the bio ethics field and human sexuality and often the information in those e-mails, although relevant to the research, is flagged as inappropriate by our appliance.   This same SPAM appliance also filters our student e-mail system.  Both of our e-mail systems are housed on campus in our data center.

Our solution to our faculty up to this point is to have those sending those e-mails; to send...
