Hi all,
Google announced last month that it was rewriting its privacy policy in a way that would grant it explicit rights to "combine personal information" across multiple products and services. In our ever-connected world, how does this affect you institution? Especially those that use gmail and google docs?

Greetings,
Curious to know if anyone has used or is using Blackbaud Razor’s Edge as a hosted service. Several months ago Blackbaud moved their data center from Atlanta to two new locations (Anaheim and Boston) and since the move we’ve been having continuing difficulties with slow connections and disconnects to their servers as well as other hosting issues. Prior to the data center move we were satisfied with the hosted service. Now, not so much. Any feedback on this would be very much appreciated.
Best regards,
Rick.

I was wondering if any of you are using a cloud service/product called GoingOn? It bills itself as an "Academic Social Networking Site" and our Academic Division is all hot to get it, deploy it, etc. I've sat in on a short discussion and a webinar about it, and have had some issues with their technical commitments related to bandwidth, service agreement, storage, etc. (which they've agreed to change) ... but I'm more concerned about viability and stability of the company, customer support (after the contract is signed), how successful others have been using it ... as my fear is that Academics will deploy it, and expect it to just "market itself" (or worse, expect IT to market it) ... and it'll become a dinosaur.
Any feedback is appreciated.

Dear
Colleagues,
We have one (just one, right now) faculty member who wants us to set up a McGraw-Hill Connect add-in for Blackboard. I haven't looked at this much, but I noticed that McGraw-Hill isn't an InCommon member. (Nor is Pearson, I think)
I can't imagine a company that has higher ed as a primary market and that is attempting to market an online service not being a member of InCommon and running Shib/SAML2 for federated ID. It suggests that they haven't thought through their privacy and security plans very well, and I'd rather not do business with a company like that right now -- we have enough problems without shooting ourselves in the foot.
Is there any concerted effort to block the use of these services until the vendors...

How many of you use the SharePoint Records Center in your electronic documents management program? Why did you go with SharePoint? In retrospect, was the decision a good one? And if you don’t use SharePoint to manage electronic records, what do you use?

I have been thinking about this lately. What do you think?
Victory depends on conditions that are always in flux.
The leader must recognize a momentary advantage, capturing it as it arises.
Such victories cannot be set aside for future use, nor can they be taught.
These opportunities happen daily. How one takes advantage of them to move an organization forward is what makes a good leader better. One is never completely ready or informed when these decisions are made. It is more of an art than a practice. If done well, things just seem to keep moving and changing without issues.

I have searched the archives and cannot find anything since 2006 so thought I might poll folks again....
Who, on your campus, makes decisions on what emails are sent to all faculty, staff, or students?
Do you have guidelines and/or policy on what is allowed?
At ISU, the decisions currently are made in IT...which I am not comfortable with..plus, we have no guidelines. As a result, almost anything goes...and we are beginning to get complaints.
Help?

At Creighton University we are using, and quite happy with, Blackboard Connect for our emergency notification system. Our Crisis Committee would like to have us add a desktop alerting product to the existing system. The Alertus Desktop product looks like a good solution and they offer a grant program so schools can receive their product for free. Is anyone using the Alertus Desktop product, how do you like it, does it integrate well into other non-Alertus notification systems, was it easy to deploy, and have you found the product to work well?

Here are some questions I ask myself about mobility and Apps.
Could a business or academic institution survive without any mobile apps?
Do mobile apps create a competitive advantage for the business or institution?
Do faculty and students select the business or institution because of how apps were made?
Do they compare business, academic, and institutional apps to those existing in the wild?
How do our apps stand up against those developed in the wild?
Is having a mobile app essential to providing a quality education?
Does limiting app development to any one solution make the quality of app better?
Should IT create fertile app development environment where both academic and business interests combine?
How do we make this happen?
Is it worth the effort and cost?
Can IT provide access to past code and make sure existing data is maintained so Apps grow and die with enthusiasm?
Today one of the most popular courses offered in computer science is app development. Look at Stanford's...

We've shared the various ticketing systems we use. But today I ask how many of your Facilities groups use or share the same systems. My suspicion is their needs are slightly different than ours in the IT world. I'm curious if there are systems that seem to work well for both groups.

We are in the process of changing our website to another provider/platform, which has a collateral impact that we must also change the system we use to send out
our mass emails to faculty, staff, alumni, students, etc. as it runs on the same platform. We are looking a few other options such as ConstantContact and CampaignMonitor, but are running into the issue that we must provide an unsubscribe link on all emails.
This is not an issue for us with alumni, but for faculty, staff, and students university policy is that they will receive them and not have a choice of unsubscribing.
I would be interested to hear what options you may be handling or have handled such a situation.

We are experiencing our second email letter-writing campaign in a month, each initiated by an online petition facilitated by the Change.org website. I know other institutions have been the target of similar campaigns. Has anyone had any success in dealing directly with the website’s owners to limit the impact of these campaigns on the IT infrastructure? If so, can you share the strategy you used?

We are considering adopting Microsoft SharePoint to, among other things, provide real time collaborative workspace for our students. I've been hearing that this is a product primarily used in the corporate sector. Are any of you using it at your institutions? If so, is it the academic or administrative side of the house?? or both? Any feedback on how its being used would be greatly appreciated

Thank all of you who responded to my question about anticipating a technology or technology event coming to campus this fall that might catch us off guard.
Remember the initial years of streaming music and video and how it killed out bandwidth or the major virus attracts that almost shut us down…It is the memories of those events that urges me to ask this question each August…Also, in August Beloit College, come out with its “Mindset List” which provides us with data about incoming students and what they “haven’t experienced” to help us with our perspective of the world in which we work - www.beloit.edu/mindset/

Colleagues,
This has been a formidable discussion. I want to weigh in on the question of the value proposition in using SaaS or Saas-like services.
Moving to a culture that lives and breathes cloud-based services and the like is a core part of our current campus IT strategy. The hard part is
not in finding SaaS vendors (they are everywhere), it is in finding vendors who are committed to working closely with our community. Last winter, when Gabe Youtsey and I gave an Educause Live! Webinar on Cloud Computing, Gabe noted
that while the technology starts the conversation, the cultural alignment is what makes it succeed. We are a major user of an externally-hosted Sakai instance. Our needs are not tidy: our application eats bandwidth and managing the peak loading
across several networks is very challenging; integration between the...

We've experienced several issues with our datacenter provider, most recently yesterday afternoon when one of their engineers accidentally overwrote several of our virtual machines including our Datatel servers. The latest backup was at 3AM and we lost
an entire day's worth of transactions right in the middle of Fall add/drop. This is after one of their engineers made changes without authorization to our firewall over last weekend that blocked our connection to Datatel
Needless to say, I suddenly find myself in the market for a new datacenter solution. I'm interested in hearing from any of you with positive experiences using providers for your high availability applications. Thanks!

I’ll agree that I don’t see a customer advantage at all in this merger. Higher costs most assuredly will present, and maintenance costs are already high. I also agree with Greg that these two platforms are very different and I just don’t see how they complement each other. Entrepreneurs are already offering cloud-based ‘subscription’ plans, which is where I see the future. The major systems currently in place require enormous upfront costs, long implementation periods, substantial technical support in place, and substantial maintenance costs. I just don’t see how that model is sustainable.
Course, my crystal ball is pretty cloudy . . .

The process we are implementing is very similar and includes almost identical categories. We utilize HelpStar to track our Break/Fix and Service Level work, then maintain a project list for the larger projects that must go through our project definition and prioritization process.
Our Service Catalog is in process and we chose to simplify it for Phase I in response to feedback that people don’t know what services we provide and how to request things.
