I personally think that certification for a C class position is a
boondoggle dreamed up by a group to require people, institutions and
businesses to spend time and money validating acquired knowledge. This is
only something that government would dream up: let's create a powerful
controlling body that claims to be agnostic in its agenda and politics but
ends up being extremely political, well paid and a major stumbling block
to progress. Most CIOs earn their positions and keep them by performing
well. I have noticed in government that CIOs can be appointed to the
position with little or no experience. If this is an attempt to fix that
broken business process then you are solving the wrong problem. If you
want to solve this mess, go to the source not the well you are drinking
from.
Do the "EDUCAUSE CIO's" (rough equivalent to the CIO's who frequent this
listserve) have a stake in these discussions, or in shaping what a
professional licensure examination might look like? I would argue "...

Back in August we outlined the issues surrounding new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) about to become available from ICANN (of the form .yourdomain rather than .com, .org., .edu, etc) and the new .xxx domain intended for "adult" sites. Some colleges and universities were contemplating obtaining the former, and attempting to protect themselves from domain assignments in the latter that might be confused with official institutional sites.
As we wrote to this group and others back, linking to a posting still available at http://tinyurl.com/3avkux5, obtaining a new gTLD is both expensive and demanding. It has since become controversial.
We also pointed out that before the .xxx gTLD began operating it was possible for an institution to block issuance of an .xxx domain, but only if that domain's name conflicted directly with an institutional trademark. Now that the .xxx domain is becoming...

Hi,
Last July there was some discussion on this list regarding using DAS (Distributed Antenna Systems) to augment and improve wireless coverage in buildings, on campuses, etc. On Feb. 1, 2012 the FCC hosted an information forum on DAS. The forum included presentations and case studies on successful deployments, all of which is available on the FCC web site. Given the amount of useful information on the site and the level of interest earlier, I thought it would be worth sharing this with the list.

The company that we use for performance management, was bought by another company. With that, of course, a price increase.
My question is, what PM system do you use?
We are a small institution, about 250 employees and we like the Sas model but will look at alternatives if it meets our requirements.
Thanks so much for your help.

Dear Colleagues,
I have been asked to find out what other universities and colleges are doing to assist those who call for information. Are they directed immediately to a live person or do you use an automated attendant? If an automated attendant answers, how many choices are there before they get to speak with a person? Do you follow any sort of best practices with regards to your implementation? Would you be willing to share good and bad experiences with me?
Thanks!

We currently outsource our Facilities operation to Aramark.
I am considering whether or not the college should provide equipment and services to the Aramark employees e.g. cell phones, computers, printers, and desktop support.
Any policy recommendations or insights on generally accepted practices would be most helpful.
I will plan to summarize results and post back to the listserv.

Dear Colleagues,
We are in need for replacing our in-house developed system used for faculty recruiting, both applicant submission and committee reviewing. If you wouldn’t mind sharing the following information I’d greatly appreciate it.
1. What sort of system/software do you use for faculty applications, committee review, and hiring?
2. Is this the same system used for general staff HR hiring?
3. Do you have a separate system/process for PhD student applications?
Appreciate the responses,

We are wondering what the community experience is with browser management. My tech folks here note that we are encountering browser issues, particularly in our single-signon portal. For example, our portal supports access through to several different products, like Gmail, Moodle, Banner, etc. Trying to make everything work in common on a browser platform is challenging. Just wondering if you have a strategy to deal with this.

Here's a straw poll question, directed primarily at those whose responsibility includes the care, feeding, and promotion of the campus learning management system (LMS): what, currently, is your primary measure of a successful learning management system (LMS) project? Is it the percentage of faculty using it?
I know there are probably a variety of ways you might calculate the success of your LMS. But my question is: what is the **primary** or most valuable way or metric you use? If you could use only one such measure, what would it be?
Thanks

Greetings, all—
We’re a small VOIP shop with only a few FAX machines left scattered across campus in some key departments who remain deeply attached to their hardware, despite continuing issues of unreliability and service disruptions.
Any advice on outsourcing? Of course our Student Services folks have FERPA concerns and our large Nursing program has HIPPA concerns. At first glance, eFax Corporate, for example, has taken all of this into consideration and covered the bases.
Any potential pitfalls from technical or financial perspectives in your collective experience? I’m about ready to pull the plug here…
Many thanks in advance.

Hi All,
This might be a a bit technical for this list, but I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
We have traditionally provided a "self-service installation page" where our Windows customers (whom do not have admin accounts) can go to get the latest interation of the commonly updated utility applications (Flash, Java,
Adobe viewer, etc.). We are in the process of moving to Windows 7 and the tool we were useing to create these self installer packages no longer works (encryptedRunAs).
Anyone else doing this with Windows 7? Suggested application?

Hello.
I’m interested in learning from institutions where student 1-to-1 programs are program specific, rather than campus wide. For instance, the Nursing Program or Education Program might have a requirement for a 1-to-1 technology (of any kind) for students enrolled in that program.
My questions at this time focus mainly on the requirements and process the acdaemic program follows in order to get approval to be a 1-to-1 technology for students. Is this tied in with curriculum approval? Do you have specific forms or process documentation for these programs? I’d love to see samples of anything in that vein that could be shared.
We are looking at identifying a process for our programs to move in such a direction, and are wanting to learn...

Santa Clara has a four year rolling replacement program. We donate all the machines replaced in any given year to local schools and non-profits, who seem happy to get four year old machines for the cost of picking them up. We limit any entity to 30 machines a year, and have institutions that have come back year over year. Demand always exceeds supply.
All machines are wiped and reimaged with the OS version with which they were originally acquired. No other software comes with the systems.

We started using PaperCut this year in our shared Engineering labs, initially using it to monitor only from September to December, and then using that information to implement a full controlled pay-for-print service starting in January. We matched the campus rate of $0.10/page (the library asked us not to undercut them!). Don’t offer colour at this time within the Faculty. We discount to $0.09/side if they duplex to encourage the paper saving, which costs us a little but is worth it for the environmental impact. They can purchase top-up cards from our Student Services office – I’m working on a web-based payment system as well.
I’ve been completely happy with PaperCut. It was easy to implement, remarkably inexpensive especially compared to other solutions, and has been solid and reliable. It handles multiple active directory domains for authentication, operates...

When I came to Bowdoin ten years ago, there was a multitude of advisory/governance/oversight committees. I immediately started by removing all the committees that did not provide any value and concentrated my efforts to make the existing ones more useful. The following year I focused on elevating the trustee advisory committee to a full committee, and establishing a new student advisory committee. Two years into the process I integrated the trustee/faculty/ student advisory committees into one meeting every quarter. This committee included two faculty, four trustees, one alumnus and two students. Three years into the process, the faculty committee determined that it had a voice and disbanded the faculty committee. The IT Advisory Committee wanted projects that would make Bowdoin better place and it functioned well in this role for about four more years. Committee members change every two years but I added a clause that allowed anyone who had served on the committee to continue to...
