Friends,

Does anyone have a questionnaire that they use for 360 evaluations.  These evaluations would be done by:

1)      Manager’s staff

2)      Manager’s primary users

3)      Significant administrators.

Thanks

Pardon me if this has already been asked…

I’m curious if other colleges and universities grant admin access to desktop or laptops owned and managed by the college and used by faculty or staff.  We currently install whatever they need for them and maintain an inventory of all software installed.  We track licensing etc.  We are hesitant to give people admin access to their machines, but more and more they want to be able to do installations to demo products, get updates that we may not have installed yet, etc.

Just wondering if we’re being overly restrictive.

Thanks for your feedback, Dennis

Colleagues,

Our college librarian wants to implement a library privacy policy which covers the use of library computers. I believe it’s directly contradictory to most institutions’ AUPs (we have an old one, but I’ve been looking at others to re-write ours).

Here’s the proposed text of the library privacy policy (highlights by me):

In accordance with common standards of privacy, the Code of Ethics of the American Library Association, and the California Government Code (Sections 6267 and 6254), we recognize that the library records of Menlo College students, faculty, staff, and other library patrons are confidential.  These records include, but are not limited to, circulation records, interlibrary loan records, and information stored by patrons on the Library's computers....

We need to find a system to track board materials.  Publish board minutes for just the trustees to view.  A means for trustees to work on committees and send communications.

If you are using such a system, would you please email me a link for the provider or explain how you are doing it.

Thank you.

At UW-Milwaukee a proposed campus-wide reorganization has the CIO and the majority of central IT moving from reporting to the Provost to reporting to the CFO on June 30, 2012. Without getting into the pros and cons of reporting to different university executives, I'm wondering if anyone has lived through such a shift in reporting lines and what you learned through the process and what gotchas might be easy to overlook. For example, we're thinking through whether all of our account coding strings would have to be renumbered to reflect a new budgetary home and what that would mean for our customers and our suppliers. All,

We're evaluating some options for the processing of online and card-present credit card payments. We use TouchNet's Marketplace/Payment Gateway for our online giving and more static ecommerce functions. Our campus is starting to ask for additional options like PayPal, Google Checkout, or Square.com for sporadic event-based payment activities.

Before we proceed, we're curious how other institutions handle the setup of ecommerce and card-present credit card transactions using either PayPal, Google, or Square.  Do you have a central service or do departments set up their own mechanisms, or both?  If so, how is it working for you? We're particularly interested in the financial back end: does each department set up their own bank account or does the institution use a single bank account for this activity, and how...

Good afternoon colleagues, We have recently started a concentrated winter term at UH-Downtown with all online classes. We are still closing the university during the winter holiday which means we are basically supporting everything online during what has traditionally been the winter break holidays. To handle support, we are scheduling a number of "tier 1" and Tier 2 helpdesk staff to cover phones and online support, mostly from home, with a whole group of tier 3 and Sys Admin support on what we call "urgent_on_call" which means we expect them to get online within a couple of hours of being called. This of course means that a number of our staff will not be able to take advantage of part or all of the Winter holidays; and what's more, we don't seem to have a reasonable way of compensating for the time aside from the standard holiday pay policy which seems less than adequate for this purpose. All other offices are shutdown during the holidays so this an IT staffing and...

Colleagues, I suspect that you may not know the answer to this question, but I am hopeful that you will forward this message to a staff member who will. One of our PC Technicians is interested in subscribing to a general higher education listserv that covers computer management in the enterprise, computer imaging, software and hardware troubleshooting, workflow, etc. I am always interested in encouraging my staff to dialog outside of our institution. As a result, I volunteered to assist him in finding such a forum. Can you suggest an active listserv in this subject area? Succession planning is important for several reasons.
  • 100% of us will get sick - no human is exempt.  We may suffer an injury.  We need to know that we've adequately prepared someone to step in our shoes should we need to be out for an extended period.
  • We can prepare people for the CIO job on our campus - or the campus down the road.  It doesn't matter.  The campus down the road may be training our next CIO.  It is an industry responsibility.  The effort is never wasted.
  • If my campus believes that a successor is better than me and is ready to take my place, I need to make sure my skills and abilities have prepared me to get the next job.  I can't rest on my laurels.  Many of work in environments where our positions are "at will" anyway, and we can be asked to leave any time.    I need to be prepared to land successfully; you need an exit strategy and an landing plan regardless of your...

Issue #8: Transforming the Institution's Business with Information Technology

Many institutions have already used information technology to achieve efficiencies. But "transformation" is a word du jour. Information technology allied with process reengineering and continuous improvement is the pathway to transformation. All aspects of higher education are being transformed, including teaching and learning, scholarship, research, institutional advancement, admissions, and administrative services. Information technology is never sufficient, but is almost always necessary, for those transformations to have both efficient and effective outcomes.

We seemed to struggle a bit with that word "transforming" and what it means in...

Colleagues,

As we review the Educause Top-Ten IT Issues of 2012, we've engaged and discussed governance and analytics, and the topic of analytics will likely be one we visit throughout our discussion.  I'd like to draw your attention to this event:

Presidents, provosts, trustees, students and the federal government are looking to us to solve complex problems through data. Analytics is ranked as one of the Top-Ten IT Issues of 2012.

While this may not be a novel topic to IT, there is still a lot to learn. Analytics can be used to address accountability, affordability, efficiency, competitiveness, and student success—but how and where do we get started?

Seriously, is Theresa awesome or what? Thanks so much for keeping this discussion going it's exactly the type of engagement (contribution and collaboration) I follow this list for, and raises a bit of a timely observation--work with me here: One of the areas often pointed to for "process reengineering and continuous improvement is" education enabled through technology (note I did not say online learning, indeed "learning online" would be more appropriate). I think Theresa's inclusion of a definition of "transformation" may be begging a few questions around authenticity versus trendiness/hype. Other ambiguous terms, like "innovation," come to mind. For example, I've been ranting for a while about MOOC's. Here are a few recent tweets: "Completely agree w/http://bit.ly/NjXVER I remember when massive amounts of people went online freely to learn-it was called "the web." #mooc" "My Top 5 #moocs 5. http://bit.ly/...

Top Ten issues defined by Educause and none of them address CIO Leadership. Is IT strategic or tactical? Do we need more or less governance? What is the role of IT in the future? Are we ready? Is the staff ready? What about cloud computing? How are services marketed? Is IT part of the academic mission? Etc.... All of this comes under leadership. Is the CIO ready to lead the institution into the future along with other senior officers and deliver a message that brings everyone there? All of these issues listed above fall on the CIOs shoulders. This is your new job or it should be. How many CIOs are in a position to lead? What should you do to put yourself in a leadership role? Do you have the position, knowledge and skills to lead an organization? Are you invited to the table? Are you an equal partner? If you are not, what have you done today to convince everyone that you deserve that role? Here is a question I ask my staff. What have you done today to put yourself an IT in a...

Hi,
Our Residence Halls was seeking to upgrade their CATV services.  An RFP was circulated but they received no vendor interest.  Technology is changing.

So, our Purchasing and Res Halls folks are interested in having a consultant review the current implementation (Comcast, original wiring) and make recommendations for the future, so that they can appropriate plan and bid out the work.

If you can recommend a vendor, please send the information to us.  Vendors, we are not interested in directly engaging on the CATV project at this point, but if you are interested in bidding on the consulting services engagement, please send your contact information to me.

One of the main criteria for a new server is to have a self-service operation-so the user interface should be easy to use.   We are also interested in LMS integration (so video content can be managed within the LMS for classes) and authentication/access would be integrated as well.

What products have you used or looked at for video streaming servers and any insights or experiences you would like to share would be appreciated.   Thanks,
