ECAR has just published the latest in its series of reports on BYOD in higher education. The final report, available to ECAR subscribers, is now available on the ECAR research hub, which also includes a new infographic and data tables. The Consumerization of Technology and the Bring-Your-Own-Everything (BYOE) Era of Higher Education, by Eden Dahlstrom and Stephen diFilipo, identifies and addresses the most important BYOE IT issues affecting higher education and includes recommendations for exemplary practices to manage BYOE IT issues. Folks,
I'm interested in visiting with any institution who has implemented

Did you work with Ellucian or another Consulting firm during

We are not using the Internet2 Net+ CrashPlan service. In part because we needed it before that service was ready and in part because our goal is to have CrashPlan as a failsafe only for those that need it, not for general use.
Our contract gives us unlimited storage on CrashPlan, so we don't have a need to manage quotas.

Casey,
Casey,
I very much liked your article especially your point that many of us are under the impression that it's "deja vu all over again." This is the point my spouse and I make in a forthcoming article in The Chronicle tentatively titled "Colleges of the Air." In the 1920s colleges were very excited about the prospects of using radio as a way of broadcasting classes to previously unserved publics and the rhetoric surrounding that development is eerily reminiscent of our current conversations about MOOCs.
Of course, just because we can see a lot of continuity between our present worries about educational technology and past ones doesn't mean that we should discount our present concerns. After all, the techniques we employ for delivering online education are more refined than they were in the past and the scope and size of technology's...

Colleagues,
I am looking for suggestions for applications used to track a variety of "compliance" issues including recommendations and action/mitigation plans. The requirements is to capture, update, and report on various type of activities related to public audit, internal audit, and risk management. For example, a risk register might be component. We are hoping to establish a single point of contact in our institution that would create, track, and report on these activities.
Of course, something suitable with a higher-education environment would help, and I am open to COS or Open Source solutions.
Any examples, recommendations, or advice from your recent or current experience would be appreciated.
regards,
John

My purely personal and "gut" response: This policy appears carefully to avoid providing any assurance or expectation of privacy or reliable service to users while asserting users' responsibility for any use to which the institution may object. In contrast it reserves authority of the institution for virtually any access to data in individual email accounts while absolving the institution of any responsibility ("Users utilize such Resources at their own risk"). I presume this is within legal bounds, but I would expect users to be dissatisfied and/or adopt external email services whenever possible.

Hi, we are updating our AUP, and we are interested in anyone who may have language in their AUP which they think effectively addresses the employee personal use issues without completely prohibiting it. We currently are working with this draft wording suggested by a lawyer:
“ Accessing the Internet for personal use is prohibited for employees, except that employees may use the College’s computer system on their lunch, break, and off-duty periods for occasional and incidental personal use which is not otherwise prohibited by this policy. Such personal use must be appropriate; it must not violate the law, interfere with the employee’s work responsibilities, or conflict with the College’s mission. Additionally, employees may not use the College’s computer system for personal gain, for the benefit of a third party, or for activities that are...

At the University of Wisconsin-Parkside we are getting a lot of mileage with Qualtrics. It is normally known for its survey capabilities but it is also a wonderful Web form tool. I am not certain how deep its capabilities extend relative to deep-level coding but if an institution were to look to replace simple and mid-level forms, this is a great tool.

We are looking into saving funds by cutting down on the number of printers on campus. We have a lot of people running ink-jet printers and/or small laser printers in their offices. We feel we can save a lot of money by having a central printer or copier that can print for everyone in the department to use and decrease the number of small printers.
I am interested in seeing policy statements on who qualifies to have a printer in their office instead of having to use a central printer within the department. I am sure we will get push-back from those who claim confidentiality, wasted time walking to the printer, etc. So, do you have a policy that states certain ranks of faculty and/or administration may have an office printer and everyone else have to walk a few feet?
If you would be kind enough to share your policies and/or thoughts, it will be greatly appreciated.

As part of several levels of organizational changes within our IT organization we're exploring the idea of having a single unified call center and providing a single number/email/point of contact for all IT service requests and helpdesk calls. The basic idea would be to have student staff do some basic triage, and then if necessary quickly refer issues to 2nd tier full time support, or into normal support queues for longer SLA responses.
Currently, our student-run helpdesk deals with walk-up, phone, and email/web support all at once which can be difficult and confusing during busy times. In addition, people call various full-time staff for what should be routine support requests that should be handled as part of a comprehensive call response system, and ensuring that full-time staff are working as efficiently as they can. My hope is to centralize initial call intake with trained students with extensive troubleshooting...

Issue #2: Supporting the Trends toward IT Consumerization and Bring-Your-Own Device
"While the technology landscape has never been more personal or easy to use, it is simultaneously increasingly complex to manage and support. Faculty, staff, and students no longer need the IT organization as an intermediary in their adoption and application of the most commonly used technologies. They arrive with mature personal computing environments that they have self-configured to meet their specific needs, preferences, and styles of work and recreation. Any college or university that maintains hard-and-fast rules about which devices and communication tools must (or may not) be used risks being irrelevant. Yet the institution's data and intellectual property must be safeguarded, no matter where it is stored, transmitted, or accessed. Even the most strategic and flexible IT organization may, at times, need to be reactive. Institutions need to learn to...

“…I stopped asking why CIOs are such a famously short-lived breed. I chose instead to focus on pressing problems at my organization from a new perspective:”
What Would the Next CIO Do?
Wow – Simple but thought provoking question! Think about it: If you were no longer in your job, what are the first problems / opportunities that your successor would jump to work on? If you can develop of list of these needed changes,...

We are currently starting an education campaign to reduce this interference. Can anyone provide advice on how to gain control of these problems? We see a lot of University sites that discuss these problems but I don't see anything suggesting how successful they have been.
I particularly see difficulties with eliminating microwaves from residence halls.

I have received concerns that students are not viewing their Gmail (College’s student email) because they are using their LMS email, where they receive communication from their instructors. This has caused a challenge as students may not be reading important material coming from the Registrar, Financial Aid, Billing, etc. How are other institutions handling this? Has anyone turned off the LMS email, which would require all communication to flow through the College’s supported student email? Has there been any kick back? Any other suggestions?

We moved our students to gmail more than a year ago while our faculty and staff are still on MS Exchange 2003. The student move went very well and students are very happy with gmail. We are debating whether to move employees over to Office365/live@edu. Most faculty and staff would like to keep the same Exchange environment (functions, look and feel) that they are currently using rather than using gmail, but IT would like to outsource the email system to the cloud. Has anyone already moved to this kind of split cloud environment or are you planning to move to a split environment?
My questions are:
1. What were your pro’s and con’s for having two separate e-mail environments?
2. Have you found any issues for users with this split environment (employees and students)?

Was wondering if anyone else out there had significant issues with the freak October snowstorm this past weekend.
Drew was hit particularly hard. We were in an area of New Jersey that got a lot of wet, heavy snow, and we have thousands of large oak trees that lost huge limbs. In addition, we have an interesting situation with electrical power--the town of Madison
has its own electric utility and we get our power from them, and they in turn bulk purchase electricity from JCP&L, who had hundreds of thousands of customers without power.
Drew's power (and the entire town of Madison) went out on Saturday afternoon around 4:30. All our server rooms have backup generators and switched on cleanly and remained running all day Sunday. Power hadn't been restored by Sunday night and the University
made the decision to cancel classes, recommended students go home if possible, take a...
