This EDUCAUSE constituent group is designed for discussion of issues and challenges that affect chief information officers in higher education: the role of the CIO, financing and funding strategies, planning and organizing for information resources (especially information technology) within the institution, human resource issues, policies for the networked information environment, and the future of higher education. This group meets at the EDUCAUSE annual conference and uses the electronic discussion list to discuss issues throughout the year.
I'm passing along this message on behalf of the EDUCAUSE/Internet2 Higher Education Information Security Council, which Peter Murray and I co-chair.
National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) 2013 is wrapping up today. Here are 5 things we'd like to share about what's been happening this month and what's next.
1) Thank you to the higher education community for a very successful celebration of the 10th anniversary of NCSAM! We've enjoyed learning about the fun, creative activities and events taking place on your campus.
2) Over 190 institutions (our...
At Hamilton College we are considering the use of very long, simple passwords in lieu of those that are short and very complex. If you currently require long passwords (12 char or greater) at your institution, we would be grateful if you could answer the following questions.
How did you prepare your campus for the use of long passwords?
What is the minimum number of characters you require? Why?
I would like to know if you would be willing to share what you use as key performance indicators in your IT organizations. This term has been tossed around at our institution in the last year because we have been growing rapidly and are opening new remote campuses. Administrators are now interested in figuring out how to measure whether or not we are really successful. We might have more students and locations, but are we doing a good job?
When I hear key performance indicators I think, “How do I measure whether or not we are being successful?” I realize it can be a lot more than that. But I was wondering if any of you would be willing to list three to five things that you use to measure success in your IT organization.
The first thing that comes to mind is the ability to review data...
I'm looking for some info on implementing digital signatures. Some good articles on the NIH project a day from th security listserv but the former does the really say how to do it and the latter is a bit more technical than it is helpful has any recent t initiates come out? Is adobe or another authority the estimate option?
And what kind of workflow impact have you seen?

St. Bonaventure is moving into a more robust offering of fully-online programs. It is our intention to allow our traditional, residential students to take “some” of their courses from St. Bonaventure online.
For those of you that offer both traditional and online courses, do you limit the number of online courses your traditional students can take? If so, what is the limit?

I am looking for a good cloud-based service to stress test a new website. Have any of you used Load Impact? What do you recommend?

We are in the process at Ringling College of Art and Design to move registration for our continuing studies program into our Power Campus Student Information system. We are wondering if anyone has used a consultant or group that is familiar with Power Campus that could help us with processes and setting up the system. We have spoken to Ellucian, but wanted to see if there were also other resources available.

At the insistence of our auditors, we have a 120-day password expiration policy at our institution. We also enforce password complexity requirements and account lockouts after a certain number of failed login attempts. Our password aging policy is quite unpopular at our institution and our users take all sorts of measures like minor sequential number increments to cope. Who can blame them?
We have been researching this recently and the evidence seems mixed. There seems to be as good evidence showing the value of password aging as there is evidence showing that it is a big waste of time. I’d like to hear how you folks are handling this question.
Good Morning Colleagues,
We have recently purchased and implemented Ellucian’s Colleague Portal which is built on Microsoft’s Sharepoint infrastructure. Coming from outside Higher Ed., I’ve seen Sharepoint’s capabilities leveraged in many ways including:
1. Document storage (elimination of the legacy “mapped network drives”)
2. Team collaboration site
5. Content Management (check-in / check-out)
If there were a development and deployment grid, and one axis was Technology and the other one was Practical use, it might look like the grid below.
So I ponder:
· What percentage of our effort should be spent in each of the areas?
· Into which quadrant do our current development/deployment efforts fall?
· In which grid(s) would you rather spend your time?
Has anyone gone to bid for service or a system that increases interior cellular coverage for voice and data services? We’re in the process of writing a RFP and we’re struggling to find the correct technical specifications.
Any help would be appreciated.

How is web support/development/strategy & branding handled at your institution?
Who owns what piece?
Our web marketing team reports to the VP for Institutional Advancement. There is also another unit “Communications and Marketing” reporting to the same VP. Basically, the folks on campus have two people to talk to for marketing which causes confusion from time to time.
We still struggle with content management and ownership issues resulting in outdated pages. The team’s primary focus is recruitment/enrollment marketing so other intranet web efforts and custom web apps development take a backseat or are low in priority on the laundry list.
I’d like to get some feedback/opinion/insight on alternative structures....
We are in the process of attempting to move from a yearly, budget-based (committee) decision making process for projects to a year round process of project requests. This is due to the fact that we are growing rapidly and expanding to remote campuses. I have been asked to develop a decision matrix to help us determine what projects are approved and which one are not. Not a simple task at many levels.
Obviously IT does not want to get into the business of making these decisions. I see IT helping to facilitate this process, present solutions, and help to weigh the options, but not be the one to say yes or no. Of course, if there are major compatibility issues, sure, but that again would need to be part of the overall process.
Would any of you be willing to share how this happens at...
We are creating a new Information Security Officer position for the University and are curious if anyone has done anything similar recently? We’re working on the actual job profile and job description and it would be helpful if anyone might be willing to share similar types of documents with us. On a related note, for those institutions that already have a role like this in place, can you share where this position falls within the organization in terms of reporting structure and how valuable you’ve found this role to be in a higher education setting?
All input is most welcome as we work to define this position, effectively grade it with HR and finally determine where this position will fall within the organization.
Good afternoon colleagues,
We will soon be offering some IT courses that require students to access various servers and databases from off-campus.
I’m curious how others grant such remote access. Do you use VPN, RDP, special software?
Thanks in advance for your feedback.

We need a concise asset disposal policy. At Fairfield, we have a form that needs to be signed off by finance to dispose, but at that point we can do what we want with the defunct equipment. We’re donating, we’re pitching, and we’re debating selling. We need consistency. Does anyone have a policy (or procedure, or both) they love that addresses technology equipment disposal?
In addition, the question has been raised at computer refresh time, “Can I keep my old computer?” Does anyone allow this? If so – policy/procedure? Do you charge? Do you wipe clean?
Thank you for any input – I welcome all feedback.
