Google Apps and AD Passwords

We are a small boarding school (400 students) and I have been tasked with pushing forward with Google Apps. Like many, I have run into an issue with synchronization, password, etc. and using our existing AD infrastructure.
From what I gather synchronizing AD requires the use of a dll/hashing which can insert a hashed copy of the password in an ldap field. However this will not occur until the next time a user changes his/her password.
How are others handling this? Use the dll/hash? Requiring the users maintain two password, one internal one for Google apps? Etc.
Any thoughts, suggestions, insights would be much appreciated.
