Hello CC list-members,

The following ECAR report is now public, Information Technology Services in Community Colleges: Strengths, Opportunities, and Challenges
IT departments at community colleges provide services to more than 13 million students annually. Community colleges are distinguished from other types of higher education institutions by their institutional missions, the populations they serve, and the degrees and certifications they confer. However, as institutions of teaching and learning, they have congruent responsibilities with all higher education institutions to provide the technological infrastructure,...

Dear colleagues,

The Association of College and University Policy Administrators (ACUPA) was formed to explore issues encountered in managing and administering institutional policy processes and structures. ACUPA not only promotes best practices in policy and procedure development, codification, and promulgation, but also tackles difficult policy issues.  ACUPA members differ greatly; their titles are not the same; there is a range of organizational alignments for policy offices; their development processes may be unique; but the common thread among us all is a commitment to creating effective policies and serving the information needs of the end users. Colleagues,

I’m curious to know if you have a unit dedicated to supporting academic, educational, or learning technology.  If you do, would you be so kind to share how your unit is structured, who it reports do, and it’s mission?  Thank you!

Colleagues,

I am writing today to invite you to attend the SoLAR Flare to be held at Purdue University on 1-3 October, 2012. The conference is fast approaching, and we’d like for you to be a part, if you’re able to do so.

This conference will be somewhat different from many academic conferences. In lieu of concurrent sessions with formal presentations, the SoLAR Flare will provide you the opportunity to participate in facilitated discussions and practical work with colleagues to learn more about student success challenges and to discover how others are looking to analytics as part of the solution. Discussion of each topic will be facilitated by a thought leader in higher education who will provide a clearly-defined challenge...

Good morning,

I just wanted to give a final reminder of a great program we offer (in a few weeks) at Cornell. It’s designed to help institutions who want to establish institutional policy initiatives or who want to hear what other institutions are doing in that area.  See below. Best, Josh Adams

Vote Today in the Board of Directors Election

Community College Colleagues,

Good afternoon!   Two of the four following colleagues will be elected to be an EDUCAUSE Board member beginning this November.  First and foremost, I highly encourage you to participate in the process and vote.  Secondly, I believe each candidate would be an excellent choice.  Having said this, I would like to offer my utmost endorsement for Joy Hatch, Vice Chancellor, Information Technology Services, Virginia Community College System.

I’ve had the distinct pleasure of working with Joy on several occasions.  I can personally attest to her knowledge and experience.  We are currently working together on the EDUCAUSE Core Data Service Advisory Group.  I encourage you to consider Joy when you vote as I believe she would...

Greetings to all…

The EDUCAUSE Core Data Survey for 2012 is closing soon – and I hope that you are already completing your survey….but if not, perhaps this email will convince you to contribute data for your college. There is some very rich information inside of the CDS, but you will only get access to that if you participate, and then you will be able to see the data for every school who has participated.  On a personal level, this information has been invaluable for planning, making the case for resources, and gauging our progress against other colleges. Most importantly, the more community colleges we can get to contribute, the better off we'll all be by having a richer set of peer data.

Now on to the good news….or at least something to spark your interest!

Colleagues,

EDUCAUSE has extended the 2012 Core Data Service (CDS) Survey.  There is still time for you to participate.  This is a great opportunity to benchmark your IT services.  As one of two community college representatives on the CDS Advisory Group I can personally attest to the positive changes made in the CDS and EDUCAUSE’s commitment to ensure the CDS is a valuable resource for community colleges.  I strongly encourage you to participate so you can analyze and compare data from peer institutions.  Your participation also increases the fidelity of the data as well as provides a comprehensive resource for us all.

Colleagues,

It's early, but I encourage you to submit an application for the 2013 Frye Leadership Institute.  The application information will become available in the fall of this year.  I believe we, community colleges, are underrepresented.  I'm not sure why, but in case it's lack of awareness, I wanted to make sure we're all aware.  This is a great professional development experience as well as an opportunity to share our perspective.

The Frye Leadership Institute is "...designed for leaders in higher education, including CIOs, librarians, information technology professionals, and administrators, who are interested in working collaboratively to promote and initiate change on critical issues affecting the academy."

Community College colleagues,

The Enterprise IT Leadership Conference 2012 will be held May 16-18, 2012 at the JW Marriott in Indianapolis, IN.  This is an excellent opportunity for community colleges to participate in the discussions, provide feedback from our perspective, and collaborate with others to solve problems within our industry.    Whether you’re a CIO or senior IT leader, an enterprise system leader, or someone who aspires to a leadership role, this is the conference for you.

Additionally, I urge you to share your expertise and the community college perspective by submitting a proposal to present at the conference.  The call for proposals (CFP) is currently open and the CFP deadline is December 16.

All,

Good morning!  Myself and Joy Hatch (VCCS) are serving on the newly formed Core Data Service – Advisory Group (CDS-AG).  Joy and I are representing community colleges.  One of our core responsibilities will be to review/evaluate the current CDS (Modules, Content, and Reporting tools) and make recommendations for improvement.   Additionally, we have a goal to increase community college participation.

We would love to hear your thoughts on improving the CDS and increasing community college participation within the CDS so we can share it with the CDS-AG.

Hi All,

We have our students moved to Google Apps, more than a year ago, and are debating on moving employees over to Office365/live@edu, currently using MS Exchange 2003.  I would like to ask those individuals who have already or planning to move to this kind of split cloud environment.

My questions are:

1.       What were your reasons for having two separate e-mail environments?

2.       Are there any issues for users with this split (faculty/Staff and Students)

3.       Are there any mail routing issues (mail delays etc.)

4.       Is there a significant increase in...
