Colleagues,

I’m curious to know if you have a unit dedicated to supporting academic, educational, or learning technology.  If you do, would you be so kind to share how your unit is structured, who it reports do, and it’s mission?  Thank you!

In the past, we had a clear delineation between Administrative Information Services and Learning Technology Services. However, with the "walls" coming down between these services, we have also adjusted our organization. Aside from other ares of IT, we have modified the organization focusing on the services we provide. For example, web services and mobile technologies are under one unit, but serves both the administrative and academic side. Although we have shifted our organization to focus on the types of service, we did not want to lose the "voice" of the academic side. Therefore, we still have a senior manager (Executive Director) that oversees Learning Technology Services that works closely with the other senior managers in IT. However, it is a smaller unit that operates as a liaison between ITS and the academic unit. In fact, to improve our services, this position is filled by an instructor who is an advanced user of learning technologies. For consistency, it is a three year commitment that can be extended if desired. Currently, it is filled by a History instructor and has one person reporting to him that helps with project management. I should also mention that an e-Learning unit exists that is under the academic side. This group focuses on the pedagogy in the use of learning technology. Our Executive Director for Learning Technologies works closely with this group as well.
