Hello all,

Is anyone currently using any desktop emergency notification software like Alertus http://www.alertus.com/desktop/ for example?  If so, please let me know any experiences you've had and with what vendors.

Many thanks.

But all of these solutions do not have a desktop component, correct? If I read correctly about the product Bryan is contemplating, it would pop up messages on everyones desktop screens. It's interesting. Does anyone else do this?

Yes Mike.  You are correct about an actual desktop pop-up on the screen.

Hi Bryan,

We use ActiveCrawl RSS (http://www.activeaccess.com/ActiveCrawlRSS.asp) which works in conjunction with our emergency alert service e2Campus (http://www.e2campus.com/). When we send an emergency alert, in addition to going out via SMS, an active crawl alert pops up on all computers with ActiveCrawl installed. I forget what it costs, but it is reasonably priced.

While in our case it works in conjunction with e2Campus, ActiveCrawlRSS is a standalone product which can be used separately. The concept is very simple. It is an app which constantly runs (on Windows it lives in the systray) and checks an RSS feed every minute, when a new item is posted to the RSS feed a window pops up (accompanied by a loud annoying sound) and displays the content of the feed.

We view it as just another layer of notification to be used in conjunction with other layers. We find it very useful, but it has a few downsides:
  • Our emergency alert system gives us the ability to target specific groups of users but Active Crawl does not. If an alert is sent to active crawl then all users with active crawl installed will get the alert. We can of course choose not to sent an alert to active crawl.
  • The application is built on top of Adobe Air so installation requires installing Air and then the Active Crawl app. This isn't a problem for us because of our 1:1, but it could be annoying for a BYOD. IMHO I think it was a mistake for Active Crawl to build on Air. Nonetheless, it works and they do provide a webpage that makes installation easy.
If you want to try installing our ActiveCrawlRSS app just go to the KB below and follow the instructions. We do a test every month or so.

Hi,

We use School Messenger for all emergency notifications.  Have not had any problems and it’s very easy to use and to create outbound messages.  We do a weekly upload of all students, family, and staff emails and phone numbers from our Blackbaud database.
