Does anyone know if it is possible to prevent users from unsubscribing from a Google Apps group?

For example, we don't want to allow students to unsubscribe from their respective "Class of 20xx" group.

Excellent question, Tom!

I'm pretty sure you can't just disable the feature, per se. You may want to check out this thread, though:

On the policy side, if there is a way to strongly encourage/rewuire students to not unsubscribe but instead setup filters that push those group emails into folders, or set their preferences to send group emails in digest rather than each email, or they can even setup their group preferences so group emails are not sent to their inbox but are viewable on the web... Those are alternatives for the students if you can somehow REQUIRE with a policy that they do not unsubscribe.

This is the problem with the way schools use group mailing lists: as vehicles for spam. It's really unfortunate that we use the mechanism to announce to the entire school body mission critical information like "This wednesday we will be following a *Monday* schedule" as we do to say "I lost my iPhone."  <end rant />

Agreed. That is a good question. I use the Active Directory sync tool that helps that to not be an issue at our school.

Yes, it looks like setting up directory sync is the only way to enforce group membership.

We've avoided the sync tool because I don't like setting up syncing for changes that only occur once a year.

Tom

This doesn't answer your question. We started using Google Groups more over the last year. We have an in-house mail server that hosts some of our mailing lists. Student classes and parent mailing lists are handled there and are refreshed nightly.
