Happy new year everyone! Groton has been using Mach5 Mailer as a bulk email tool. Most of the time it works fine, but, sometimes, it just stops processing and it can be tough to know why and / or how far it got into it's queue of emails in order to know where to restart ... vendor support has been non-responsive. We are now looking for a new solution and our development office wants to go with Fire Engine Red. Anyone have anything to share on Fire Engine Red or any other bulk email solutions that might be keeping users happy and keep tech support staff out of the equation? We got three large LCD TVs and put them on rolling carts with DVD/VHS combo players that get rolled from class to class when MacBook DVD or iPad to projector isn't a practical alternative.

Handbrake and Mac the Ripper are great but in addition to (usually) being illegal, they create a slippery slope, IMO. Once you rip a DVD for faculty, they keep coming back for more. But that's your call.

We are leaning that way with our current library software, but open to other inventory/tracking systems people may be using, we currently have Follet.  I'm also looking for more of a Logistics answer as to manpower and issues people have come across with return, tracking, etc..  We're looking to bump up the laptops in there for circulation to meet demand but trying to do it as efficiently as possible.  We may even allow check-out for the day at some point too.

Hi Everyone,

We are looking to harden our infrastructure and become more aware of and resistant to our top risks. As such, we plan to formally document a business continuity plan and to develop a plan to mitigate our top risks. We have a start but want to make sure that we are covering all areas. Does anyone have a plan for their school that they would be willing to share? Or any information that could be useful in creating a plan?

Thanks for any help you might be able to offer,

I know this topic comes up every once in a while, but I am finally getting my maintenance crew to be interested in some sort of digital tracking system so I need to ask again.

I am curious what people use.  My maintenance crew did not like school dude when they looked at it.

Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

Dear Colleagues,

Here at Ravenscroft we are investigating how to make instructional technology in our 6th grade an interdisciplinary class that all 6th grade students are required to take. Our vision is to have a course that has foundations in technology skills, presentation/communication skills, study skills, media literacy skills, etc. In short, the course would provide students with the skills necessary to participate in a 1:1 environment in grades 7-12. We believe we need to provide our students with a solid base as they move through our school and believe such a course would benefit all students.

Just a quick question for those of you who have moved to Google Apps. What did you do with Microsoft Office, assuming you had it prior to the move? Did you drop it for faculty/staff/students, or some combination? Do you still have it? And in light of the events of the last two weeks, did having your primary app suite online pose you any problems?

For background, we have been moving toward Google for about 6 months, and are having some teachers and students pilot it. I watched Joe Lorenzatti ‘s presentation on Office 365/Live, and can see a benefit to keeping your Office license and using their web suite as a platform. It just doesn’t integrate into as many systems, if any. If I am going to pay for MS Office, and it is only a little more to make it all online from MS, then why should I go with Google, even if it is free if I am still paying the MS tax to keep the...

How would you publish a textbook that would be readable across many platforms? Some examples might be to publish it in a format readable on a Kindle which has readers for many devices or use the Book module in Moodle which would be web based or write it in Word and use utilities to convert it to various formats. How would you go about this?
Thanks,
Robert

I am looking for advice on ipads an ibooks:

We have 20 ipads that are Supervised using the Apple configurator. I need to get an ibook purchased (20 copies) from the vpp store onto those ipads, but the Configurator is not capable of distributing ibooks. I know that ibooks are handled differently than apps in terms of who retains ownership and how the codes must be redeemed, but what are schools with Supervised carts in Lower School classrooms doing to get ibooks onto their ipads? Is there ANY way to do this, even if I had to create 20 unique apple ID's, would this work since the ipads are tied to configurator?

Aside from using apple ibooks, are there better solutions for purchasing and distributing ebooks from other sources that would allow me...

Per Mary's request: About Google apps vs. Office 365 First off, I say sign up for both. There's no penalty for having both. Both offer cloud storage, productivity apps (word processing, spreadsheets, etc), and email apps. Users could use both on the same system, so it could be user/faculty/student preference. I personally like Office 365 for Education's service offering and (in my opinion) Microsoft has tighter integration and better services: offline document capability, Note-taking (OneNote), email (Outlook - [online or off]), and cloud-storage (SkyDrive). The only mandatory decision to make: which service do you host your school's email/archive email. Again, I prefer Microsoft's services. NOTE: I am not aware of Google having any offline-email capability. Hope this starts the conversation; as I always say: Your mileage may vary! J

I feel very strongly that any school related matters get communicated through a school email address.  There are issues of clarity, how official the email is, legal issues, document retention issues, ediscovery, and, of course, common sense.  I also wouldn’t want my personal email to be searched through for something that came up.

For similar reasons, I have been resistant to issuing school emails for folks who do not work for the school (unless they are trustees or Parents’ Association officers and then they often get chapinschool contacts as opposed to emails).  We have requests from learning consultants who work for the local school district to have them, and I have had to say no.

On an indirectly related matter, I am feeling the need to push back...

We are using Microsoft Dynamics RMS to manage our school store/cafe inventory and checkout processes.  We use it because it’s the only solution that Blackbaud supports to use in conjunction with Education Edge.  Our school store folks are very unhappy with the Microsoft product and have continually been asking for something “better”.  So, assuming that we are able to manage, on our own, an appropriate import/export process with blackbaud, what software would you recommend to run the school store?  Our priorities are that the software is easy to use, can process transactions very quickly (the line of students gets quite long during morning break), and the reporting is flexible and detailed.

We have forty laptops that faculty can reserve for their classes.  They are not on carts, but go out individually, so one faculty member may reserve 18 and another 6.  We have three Divisions so the classes all start and end at different times.

I have been using a printout from excel that shows ten minute time blocks (rows) and writing in the faculty name, number of laptops, and an arrow showing the duration.  This actually works pretty well, but uses a fair bit of paper (three sheets a week) and there are two of us doing the reservations.  The book is never where we need it.

I am looking for something such as a filemaker pro or similar solution.  It is relatively complex as there are 40 items across five or ten minute time slots.  I don't care which unit is reserved, I just don't want to...

Robert,

I agree with Christopher on features. I’m a big fan of Aerohive since selecting it for Gann Academy for both features and cost, however I always compare products. I’ve completed two rounds of comparisons in the last couple of years looking at multiple vendors. We just selected Aerohive for Xaverian Brothers High School. We found that a rip and replace is cheaper than adding more Aruba with the capacity and redundancy that we need.
