First of all, thanks a lot for all the feedback everyone sent about Matlab. It was great to see how people are trying to deal with this.

I have today another question how people are handling Comsol licensing and especially the remote access.

If you have a central Floating Network License or Classkit License(s), how are you dealing with the following restriction of the Academic license?

“The Academic Addendum states “The FNL and CKL versions of the Programs may only be used on a network that is restricted to solely on-campus use.”

This statement can be taken literally.  The user needs to be working with the software on-campus. “

Hi folks….I have a non IT related question for the group.

We are in the middle of evaluating the overall culture in engineering and one of the committees that was formed was professional development and mentoring for staff.  One thing that came up in our first meeting was the lack of a local HR representative in the school.  Historically, we have always had one but when the last person in this position left, they spread the responsibilities out across different individuals.  The overall feeling from the group is that this actually hurts the school since there isn’t a single resource with the expertise to coordinate and manage development and/or recognition programs at the school level.

So, my question to the group, do your schools have a dedicated, local HR representative or id the...

Recently, a few of us across different colleges at FSU have initiated a dialogue about the changing ways our students communicate, and how this should impact what we do.

The challenge we have verbalized is, how best to utilize our resources to address the changes in communication structures that the students use versus what the faculty (typically/historically) use?

I see two interrelated sub-issues here:

(1)    How to communicate with students in general.  Our experience is that email is an increasingly poor way to get information to students, but the faculty find it challenging to use any other communications method.  We are using Facebook, Twitter, closed-circuit TV, and email to deliver general...

Good morning.  Our Team here at Pittsburgh is embarking on a thorough testing & viability project related to introducing a VDI into our 18 computing classrooms.  Presently populated by high end workstations, and running apps to those similarly running in your environments like ANSYS, LabView, SolidWorks, Matlab, COMSOL, etc, we want to determine how well a VDI can perform and deliver in a production classroom compared to the dedicated environment in which they now operate.

I would love to get some feedback from those of you who have taken, or are considering taking, the plunge on this front and what your experience has been.

Best,

Brian

Good Evening,

I was wondering if list members might be willing to share their experiences with regards to 3D printing?

It would seem that with recent mergers that the industry is starting to consolidate, but there still remains a fairly wide range of 3D printing options, from DIY models to commercial grade machines.

I'd imagine that there are legitimate concerns over staffing implications, material usage, dedicated workstations, printing times etc. which will all be dependent upon the scale of the services.  Our initial thought is to offer 3D printing to students for project use and rapid prototyping.

If this venue is appropriate, I'd welcome your thoughts

Cheers

Greetings.  For the past several months, our School has been examining the processes underlying our management of graduate program applications.  In the past, the School has followed a fractured process of part paper – part electronic that has resulted in frustrated departments, lost candidates, and missing information, amongst other issues.

We’re coming to a point where we need to begin considering what the market has to offer, and what other Engineering schools are doing/have done to make the application process simple for applicants, and the review-management-of-the-apps process simple and flexible for the departments who need to select their candidates. One of the many areas where “traditional thinking” has been evolving is with regard to allowing food and drink in computer labs.

Personally, I am comfortable with creating “lounge-like” spaces for students, with computers, where  refreshments are allowed.  However, I am not at all comfortable with taking a traditional, packed-with-computers lab space and allowing unlimited food and drink.

This subject is about to come up in my shop, so I am curious to hear from others about where you are…  Have you relaxed food and drink policies in your computer labs?  Or discussed it and decided not to relax your policies?  What were the key factors in your decision?

Hello,

I was wondering if list members would be willing to share their experiences with Google Apps or Microsoft Live@Edu/Office 365?

York University is considering both solutions for student email, with a likely decision in Spring 2012, and a possible roll-out in the Fall.  However, at the moment, the solutions are only being considered for students.

Have any list members migrated to either of the platforms?  Did faculty and staff also make the move? Have you experienced any 'gotchas' with regards to either platform?

Currently, there's a collection of email services on campus, with services ranging from a 100MB inbox for students to 1GB for Faculty/staff - some are Lotus Notes based, others are Horde-based.

Kind Regards

We are looking at how to tweak a model we have in place that has become burdensome for our staff.   Here is the background:

When we refresh labs and faculty/staff desktops systems we retire the systems and these  sit on an inventory of systems that are not quite as good as the new ones but may have some warranty time left on them (we get 5 year warranty). To be prudent with these state purchased systems we make them available as secondary systems to the faculty/staff who can request these to be allocated to departmental labs, research, grad student, projects.   We let them know that these are old systems and when they run out of warranty we will not be able to repair them.   The department who approved the allocation of these systems will have to pay for repairs.  As a side effect, the older systems (6-7 years old) can no longer run the...

Hi Folks,

Just tried to send a message to the list and discovered that I actually wasn't subscribed, that issue is now fixed.  I checked the archive and noticed that the only traffic has been from Didier Contis asking about Dropbox policies.  At this point I have no idea who has subscribed and therefore how much marketing I need to do.  To that end please allow me to poll the list to find out who is out there.  If you could respond with your name, Institution and your role in Engineering IT Leadership I would appreciate it.  My info is contained in the signature block below.

To answer Didier's question about Dropbox, at this point NC State doesn't have a policy and I don't expect us to anytime soon.  I and my security folks actively discourage its use for official purposes and the University IT security folks have a great deal of concern about it but as there are a several executive officers who use it the...
