Hi All,

 

We are starting to implement Banner Time Entry and one of the requests has been to ‘use a card swipe to clock in and out’ in particular for our facilities services folks whom have a great deal of employees that start all at once and they would rather not have all of them sit down at a computer to clock in.

 

We are a Banner school (obviously) as well as use Blackboard Transact as our card system.  It would be nice to use Blackboard natively, but at the very least we would certainly like to use the same card on some other vendor’s reader.

 

Anyone doing this?  Other options?

Hello everyone,

We're exploring the possibility of moving from a course credit system to a semester hours system. Currently, we issue one credit per course, but if we make the conversion, we'll be issuing x number of hours per course depending on the class requirements.

I'm curious if any of you have gone through this type of conversion. It opens up multiple cans of worms for us (IT, Registrar, students already in the system, etc.,etc), and we would be appreciative of any advice to avoid pitfalls or smooth the process.

If you've done it, would you be willing to share some information please?

We have been doing a penetration test every couple of years.  So, it is getting time for another one.  I am thinking of using a different company to compare results and ensure we are having good tests.  Also, I am thinking of having a more extensive security audit done.  So, could all of you share the following:

1.  What company do you use for security audits?  Contact info will be appreciated.

2.  How extensive is your security audit?

3.  How often do you have a security audit performed?

BTW - Our Trustees are on campus.  One Trustee asked me yesterday how often we have security audits since the latest problems with Target.  She then stated that some non-profit organizations (that she serves on the board) have security audits every 3 months.

We are in the process of migrating from Novell GroupWise to Google Apps. One of the major differences for us is the use of groups instead of distribution lists for all campus mail. I'm curious to see how other institutions made the transition to groups and how you are sending campus wide email messages.
 
Specifically, do you have separate groups for different types of students or faculty vs. staff?
 
How do you manage who can post to the groups?
 
For those not syncing with active directory, how do you deal with users un-subscribing from lists?

At Maryville we re-evaluating the way we do printing.  We currently purchase desktop and network printers and also have a fleet of MFPs that service groups of users.  We use Equitrac to manage the MFP devices but don’t currently track printing at the desktop and network/workgroup level.  We would like to eliminate all individual desktop/personal printers in favor of shared printers and we are considering outsourcing the whole print operation. 

 

Is anyone currently taking this approach and if so which print vendor and print management software do you use?

Good afternoon!   I have two questions that we recently discussed in one of our staff meetings:

 

1.       Are you making the move to a 64-bit operating system for faculty, staff, and students computers at your institution?    Personally, I’ve been running a 64-bit operating system on my tablet (utilizing everything that one would typically find on a student/faculty/staff computer) and I haven’t experienced any issues.

2.       For Fall 2014, what will be the standard operating system that will be loaded on faculty, staff, and student systems?  We are standard on Windows 7 and are seriously considering sticking with that platform for another academic cycle and waiting...

A longtime request by our students, we are looking into ways of providing “lifetime” email to Alumni. One of our main concerns with lifetime e-mail is with IT having to maintain the student account in AD for “life” – including password resets.  Currently, student e-mail is hosted with Live@edu and we would most likely host it there (subdomain – alumni.lasell.edu).   Wanted to see if anyone at a school similarly sized to ours (~1800 students) has had any success stories (or horror stories) with alumni e-mail for life and how you go about doing it.

Hi all,

Our Film program checks out gear to film students for their classes (cameras, tripods, lights, mics, etc).  They've got a lovely paper system going that needs to move into the modern era.  I'm wondering what folks are doing for AV checkout.  So far I've looked at

- Our Library system : overkill
- Check In/Out Organizer : cheap ($250) but mixed reviews from another school
- WebCheckOut : too expensive for the scope of use

Any great finds that are working well and are cheap (<$1000)?

Hi all,
A while back - October is when the thread started - some discussion about building an RFP for VoIP came up.  There was some off-list exchange and discussion as well.  

Would anyone be interested in a panel/joint presentation about it at Educause?  

It's been quite an experience for us and we are still facing some of the issues which I outlined when  I first presented my case to the president and board.  From "why would a small college need a full blown UC solution" to getting people to actually adopt some of the features such as Presence and the video part of our conference bridge (they use the audio/phone conferencing just fine...).  

Menlo is pretty small and I feel a presentation just by us might not give as complete a picture as it deserves.  I am sure others have dealt with justifying an enterprise UC solution, going through...

  Am looking for suggestions for software to convert narrated PowerPoints to a small file size. I’ve had our V.P. mention that “Articulate” is a software he had used in the past that converts a large narrated ppt into a flash video. We will be using these ppts in our online classes so need to keep the file size as small as possible. 

  Has anyone used this particular software? Or...can you suggest a software that will convert to a small size? We are using Office 2007.

Hope you all are having calm end of semesters.  We are in serious discussion about migrating our college website to a new platform.  We are fine with (and actually prefer) open source.  We have some good analysis done already and have found some spreadsheets and assessments on line.  But curious about some actual experiences moving to and then supporting and maintaining (and upgrading) on Drupal, Joomla, or Wordpress.  We have some components already in Joomla but are not wedded to Joomla.  Of the three, it looks like we are leaning towards Drupal or Joomla rather than Wordpress.  What were the deciding factors in your choice of one product over another?  After you migrated, did you have regrets or second thoughts?  We are a small staff and am looking for as much upfront information/feedback as possible.  I would appreciate hearing from you.  Have a...

HI all,

We are re-working how our helpdesk functions streamlining the number of points of contact and presenting a unified face across campus. Part of this change involves the helpdesk becoming student-run. There will be a staff person who oversees the helpdesk, but the hope and plan is that it would primarily be run by students. Some questions I have regarding this:
  • Do you create your own in-house knowledge base or is there a resource/organization that provides this?
  • Related to that, what sort of training materials do you use?
  • If you have a student run helpdesk: What were some of the challenges getting it up and running?

I have been reviewing some of the responses to the IT & Ed Tech thread.  Some great information, very helpful.

 

I have been tasked with doing some benchmarking and information gathering for our school in California.  We have historically been a 2 year private institution until last year when we became a four year BA degree granting institution.  We run about 900 students and it looks like we will be growing to about 1100 next Fall.  We have a main campus and one satellite campus where we hold upper division courses.  We have six IT staff members including the Director and are finding it is becoming difficult to support multiple campuses and two off site residential locations.

 

I wanted to know if I could get some responses from some of the same institutions that responded to the IT & Ed Tech...

Hello all,

I'm wondering if anyone is running an affordable (key criteria) online self-service job costing and submission package in their Copy Center?  I'm imagining a system where an authenticated user picks all their options -- double-sided, 3-hole punched, green paper -- and sees all the charges each choice adds along with a grand total.  Then submits the file and the copy center takes that and does the job (and this is exportable for chargebacks to dept cost centers).

Right now we're aware of some expensive options and I'm sure there must be something out there that is affordable.

I’ve had a good mental picture of my network and old diagrams of it available to me for many years, but I’d like to let go of all that and create a new diagram from scratch.  The first thing I hoped to do was use some kind of tool to initially discover and map my network.  I spent a great deal of time identifying and setting up SNMP strings and getting all of that information into all my switches and routers and wireless controllers and other infrastructure hardware.  Now I’d like to see some payback from that little exercise…. 

 

So what I would like to find is a nice little piece of software that I can run to discover, query with snmp for basic data, and then take a stab at drawing the network for me.  I’d like to start with open source or otherwise free tools, but am not above hearing about your success with a moderately...
