This article discusses the challenges with creating a path form the next generation of women in IT to become leaders. Interesting trend in the numbers amongst women computer science graduates ( 37% in 1985 as compared to 18% in 2010). A sharp decline. Thoughts?

Hi Everyone,
As we gear up for the annual conference Nov 6 -9, 2012 in Denver I would like to share a couple of recent articles and a publication that I think will make for some great discussions.
The first is an article from The Chronicle "A New Kind of Affirmative Action Can Ensure Diversity" http://chronicle.com/article/A-New-Kind-of-Affirmative/134840/ by Richard D. Kahlenberg. In it he discusses the upcoming Supreme court ruling on Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin and the effects on diversity in institutions. He believes that in order to foster diversity institutions need to adopt creative approaches for promoting diversity. His publication "A Better Affirmative Action" published by The Century Foundation is available as a pdf http://bit.ly/TCFABAA. Have a look...

Pam, Keith & Maria,
I 100% agree with you all. I do think Jack is a throwback from a bygone era that is trying to reclaim a new paradigm that he really does not understand. I think he is echoing what I have personally been hearing in the media with regards to movements such as the Tea Party folks. That is to only say they have been voicing that they want to "restore" America or bring back values from before the 1920's. It is echoed in congress, presidential candidates, and the business sector.
However, what Maria is saying is so true, things have changed. With the advent of current technological devices and digital/electronic information access many "systems" are struggling to keep up. Yet, there are some who want things to proceed at a much slower pace than the technology will allow them too. The business model has been trying to adapt to it. Higher education is struggling with it. And...

I’m with you Pam. I may have walked out. Seems to me he has a one size fits all approach and women are expected to use this one approach. I didn’t like that he dismissed affinity groups as weak, when in essence there is strength to be gained from others within the group which can help propel individual growth. I couldn’t help but think what his thoughts may have been on ethnic or racial minorities. You can find role models and examples of good and bad leadership throughout an organization, but a mentor is supposed to be a trusted advisor. The key here is trust which only comes from a very good relationship. I recommend to my staff to get a team of mentors (2-3) who can help you navigate and advance your career.

Mentors?
Hi Everyone,
I hope your week has been productive!
I want to see if we can get a discussion going about mentors and mentoring. My question is do you have a mentor(s)? If you do how did this come about and what is your relationship with her/him? Did it just sort of happen? What would you say is the one best advice she/he has given you?
I’ll start it off.
John Beaubrun (http://bit.ly/zIvI3J), Although, I have other mentors today John has a special place in my professional and personal development. I never asked him to be my mentor (and he never knew he was) but I closely watched his almost every move. You can say I studied him, as actors do when preparing for a role. For me this was the first time I had ever seen a man of color in his position in real life. And I guess what drew me to him...
