The hacking attempts, many thought to be from China, are forcing universities to spend more to prevent and detect intrusions and to constrict their culture of openness.

Security professionals are close to the issue; this isn't likely news to that community.  Articles like this may provide an opportunity for security professionals to make business cases on their campuses in order to justify security improvements or request additional resources. 


I agree. I always find it interesting when the media picks up on "breaking news" about security issues. Those of us in the infosec sector are (or should be) aware of the issues affecting our networks. My edit for this article would have been to not focus on research institutions but rather shed the light on all universities.
