Position Information  Full-time, permanent (probationary) position. Reporting to the Technology Security Officer, the Security Analyst is part of the security team which provides a central point of contact for the coordinated security effort on campus and provides technical support and network design for firewalls, intrusion detection systems, VPN solutions, security auditing and scanning services. The position also provides security consultation and education services for the campus community. The position also manages essential campus infrastructure systems critical to campus security such as DNS, DHCP, authentication systems, and network security management and monitoring systems. To that end, the incumbent will work closely with all divisions on campus, with management and staff from those divisions.

Salary Range Salary Range: $4,314 - $8,831 per month (Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $4,314 - $7,224 per month). The competitive salary offered to the selected candidate is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.  

Responsibilities The Operating Systems Analyst is responsible for, but not limited to, the following: computing and network security; configuring and maintaining campus networking security infrastructure including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and VPN solutions; performing security audits of campus systems including campus security scanning, deploying intrusion detection probes, auditing system log files, and auditing system applications, configurations and procedures; responding as part of the ITSO team for campus security events as needed, and in accordance with the campus security plan; performing forensic analysis as needed; providing security consultation and education for the campus community including NAC Security meetings and the SDSU-CERT mailing list; systems management; performing system administration duties as required on ITSO security systems including DNS, DCHP, firewalls, authentication systems, and network security management servers; maintaining system security; installing and customizing software as needed; writing custom software as needed; user education and training; cross-training ITSO and campus staff in security procedures and system administration functions; documenting all policies, procedures, and configurations on ITSO systems; and providing campus user support as needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities The ideal candidate will possess working knowledge of the assigned computer operating systems, systems analysis and systems-level programming; internal operating system technology, computer operations and hardware, and network communications theory; network operating system and network architecture, configuration, and protocols; client server technologies; applications programming techniques and procedures; job controls and production procedures with an ability to troubleshoot and isolate production problems and applications code. Ability to use operating system languages as defined by the campus and ability to perform systems level programming in a distributed, networked environment; use performance monitoring software and interpret results; perform preventative and remedial maintenance to operating system(s); interface/integrate campus defined operating system(s) with software and other systems; evaluate existing and proposed systems and recommend upgrades and/or modifications; research and survey new products and/or releases, such as productivity tools; establish and document operations procedures; write clear and complete documentation, including policies and procedures for highly complex systems. Strong communication and organizational skills. Must work non-standard hours as required.

Experience and Education Bachelor's degree, preferably in computer science, mathematics, or a related technical field, or equivalent training and/or experience and two years of experience in Information Technology Security.

Specialized Requirements Extensive knowledge of the security aspects of all major operating systems including UNIX, Windows, and MacOS; network systems including routers, switches, firewalls, VPN devices; networking protocols and services; encryption technologies, including VPN solutions, SSH, SSL, TLS, IPsec; authentication systems including Kerberos, RADIUS, TACACS; current security attacks and countermeasures and network monitoring procedures; and of UNIX security procedures, both in system administration and programming. Specific knowledge of networking and firewall products. Knowledge and experience with network and system auditing and analysis tools. Excellent system administration and troubleshooting skills, specifically in a Linux and Windows server environment. Knowledge and experience in building, configuring, installing, maintaining and troubleshooting critical enterprise systems and services including DNS, DHCP, NTP, HTTP, Mail. Excellent system programming skills in a UNIX environment using languages such as C, Perl, BASH scripting, PHP. Strong database skills and experience with installing and maintaining MySQL servers.

Preferred Qualifications Extensive experience working with end users. Experience implementing secure network architectures and computer systems; building and administering Linux, Solaris servers; and diagnosing and recovering from malware infections. Strong customer service skills. CISSP or other Security or Network certification (SANS, ISC2, CompTIA, etc.). Configuration experience with Juniper firewalls running JunOS or ScreenOS. Forensic experience with Linux and Windows systems including strong knowledge of file system structures.
