Is anyone using Nexus 7 tablets for check in and other activities? We've recently switched to using Gmail for our backend, and our ID cards have NFC chips, so I'm looking into ways to use this tablet for attendance tracking and survey use. I have a lot of offices interested, but haven't seen any good interface yet for using mobile devices for attendance tracking (at least, no good affordable interface ...)

Forgive me for being terribly derelict in getting these out. These are summary notes from our SIG meeting in November. A few things stand out:
1. There seems to be a need for information and resources on student affairs computing
2. There is a wide range of models to support student affairs IT
3. We think it would be beneficial to compile some lists of commercial software that is used by student affairs
To this last bullet, I think we need to start small. And so I would propose we pick one area to concentrate on from these areas:
· Housing

Anyone interested in proposing a presentation for Educause 2013? I’d be interested in working on one – I have some ideas, but none are completely formed yet. My general area would be the intersection of non-technical student affairs and technical staff/support services. If anyone is interested, let’s connect.

Tim

I am very glad to see that there is now an IT list for Student Affairs , I am new to the Student Affairs division so I am grateful to have a place to tap into some resources.
I am hoping that someone out there can share information with me on job descriptions for a position that is Web Developer or Database Programmers. I am just looking for some place to start. I recently did a job search for a position and it failed so I want to review what others are doing to ensure that I am on the right track. Any information would be appreciated.

What a great way to start my day --- finding out that there is now a Student Affairs constituent group in EDUCAUSE! Many thanks to David Sweeney for getting this started. As a higher education and student affairs professional who just happens to work with technology, I feel compelled to add to this conversation by noting that the work we do includes the support of activities that go beyond academics. Promoting the holistic development of our students is a critical contributor to retention and success. It's important for those of us working with technology to help others in student affairs -- and in academics! -- understand the impact of technology on our students' experience, both inside and outside the classroom.
OK, I'll get off the soap box for now! Looking forward to lots of great discussion.

Welcome to the Student Affairs IT Constituent Group!
Allow me to introduce myself. I’m David Sweeney. I’ve been working in IT at Texas A&M University for 17 years in the Division of Student Affairs. Student Affairs “flavor” of IT has a few twists and turns to it. We deal with student organizations, event management, risk management and fiscal systems for student organizations. Many institutions also have Residence Life with Student Affairs and this function has its own world of IT systems – housing applications and dorm management, keys management, facilities, custodial, financial management and reporting, apartment management, just to name a few. Also within student affairs, we generally find the Dean of Students who manages student conduct, off-campus housing, graduate services, women’s services, GLBT services, and all the associated IT...
