My group was curious how other schools handle the situation where primarily students forget their password but also forget their
security questions, and are unable to come to the campus.

Our Help Desk used to ask DOB and last 4 of SSN, but no more of the latter. We can ask their student id number.
Is any other demographic information recommended, from class registration to home addresses or past education info bits? We don't yet ask for or record
a home email address, though recognize that could be another data point for this mix.

Appreciate your input. I can follow up with a summary if people wish to instead just email me.

Our policy applies to all users (students, faculty, staff, and retirees) – though it’s primarily students that need this option. Also, this option is only available when the user is out of town or cannot physically come into the support center office.

·         Required to send a photo copy of their University ID card or State-issues photo ID as an email attachment or fax

We will then verify all of the following over the phone:

·         User Name

·         Birth Date

·         University ID number

·         Home mailing address

·         Home phone number

·         Middle name

Greetings all…

Most of the places I have talked with typically ask the same type of questions listed in the replies already received. These questions also the typically the type of questions that parents, spouses, boyfriends/girlfriend or good friends might also know.

With that in mind – one of the colleges I was at used a different approach, where a program was developed that would show the student’s information along with their class information for the past several semesters. With this information, the Help Desk could then ask the typical questions, but also other random questions, such as - who was your instructor for Math 101 last semester? Or what building was your Bio 102 held? These types of questions were much more random and had less chance of being “known” by others…and thus potentially more secure.

Just thought I would share…

Joy :-)

In case anyone didn't know, Gallaudet is a deaf university so our students uses the video phone where we can see and sign to each other. We required their DOB and lat 4 digits of their university ID and personal email on file. If all matches we will send the link to the personal email on file. Because of the video phone, we are able to see their faces and their id when held up to the camera.
