Hello fellow PM constituents,

I am looking into various project portfolio management and governance approaches.  Do any of you have a governance board and project portfolio management function for university capital projects?  While IT is a major part of this, this can also include other major projects from facilities and other parts of a college/university.  The portfolio management function would help determine where best to strategically allocate resources (money and people), and to prioritize and approve significant capital projects.

If so, can you briefly let me know who makes up the governing body and the generally how the university portfolio is managed?   I would like to know if there have been any noteworthy improvements or successes through this implementation on the project portfolios or how resources are spent.

I am also interested in examples at the level of university IT as well.  I do not need anything overly detailed, as I am mainly inquiring on who is doing this and if there are any successful models out there.

Thanks in advance,

-          Brian

For what it’s worth, here is a link to our major projects process in Facilities Management. The dates in it are old so I can’t say if it has been modified since this posting.

The process for IT projects is similar. We have another committee, ICT Priorities and Planning, that was recently formed to screen stuff before going to PCIP with other capital projects.

I’m not part of this process, other than occasionally working on projects that have to through the process.

Hope this helps,

Alan
