As mentioned in an earlier post, UBC will be reforming our Research IT governance structure. I would be interested to know how others have approached this and with what level of success. For UBC I am taking a phased approach towards deliverables with the first step being a research strategy for IT at UBC (not just “central” IT). The next step will be the operationalization of the strategy and subsequent advisory groups. Without going into all the details there are three underlying issues we wish to address:

1)      Rebuilding the trust between the research community and IT

2)      Receive scientific guidance/leadership in the prioritization of IT support services and infrastructure at UBC

3)      Develop strong relationship...

Greetings,

Does anyone have a list or reference (URL?) to typical IT service metrics that can be used for analyzing the operations of an HPC center (clusters of compute) in a higher ed environment?

Thanks,

I submitted a request to the Educause editors for articles on this topic as it relates to the value of IT. A copy of that letter is included below and welcome feedback from the larger community on this list. A brief background on my interest in the topic is included below but I anticipate becoming more actively involved in this group as our program develops and moves from an investigative pilot to operational business unit at UBC. Please feel free to contact me to share and collaborate further as this is a massive journey to take and I would appreciate some company along the way.

My inquiry is primarily selfish in nature as I would like to suggest, or rather beg, for feedback/articles on how value of IT is assessed in other organizations. More specifically, I would like to understand how other research intensive organizations measure the success of their research IT support...

The 5th annual Supercomputing Conference birds-of-a-feather session on Small High Performance Computing Centers will be this afternoon at 5:30 local time at the Denver Convention Center in room 705.

The purpose is to have a lively discussion among the attendees.

In preparation for that discussion, the 3rd annual survey of Small HPC management practices was conducted over the last month.

At the session, we'll have the following slide deck that summaries the survey trends to use as a discussion prompt:

Good morning,

We’re working on preparing for the merger of UTB and UTPA Universities in the Rio Grande Valley, and we’re looking at how other Universities do things to see if there are any areas we can improve on in the new merged University.

An issue we’ve identified is that we don’t currently have any central source of funding for research infrastructure, especially for items that benefit researchers in general but which span departments or colleges.  We have lots of small ways of getting relatively small funds on a somewhat ad hoc basis, but no specific central funding for research infrastructure per se – and by that I mean, for example, things that are directly usable by researchers such as shared research labs, site licences for expensive software packages such as Matlab...

What tools are you providing to support to large dissertation files, especially those containing multi-media?

One of our doctoral students is using a large number of photos in his dissertation. It is about half written at this point, and is 442.3 MB.  The faculty adviser just wrote to us looking for a way to both work on it (so the adviser can comment and edit and the doctoral student can continue to work on the same document).

They uploaded it to a Dropbox account, but are now noting the computer takes a very long time to download it each time.   So they contacted us for advice about using Google Docs.

We use Google Docs on campus for some things and we've implemented Xythos.  I've now warned the faculty adviser about the risks of using Dropbox or Google Docs for original intellectual property.  But on the other hand, I'm not sure I know the best tool to offer.

Do you have any suggestions about how they might be...
