LICENSING Digest - 13 Feb 2013 to 14 Feb 2013 (#2013-19)

The University of Cincinnati has been trying to get the Student media for the Office 2013 suite for the past 3+ months, as part of our EES agreement that includes the Student option.

Initially, we were told it will be around mid-January, then sometime in February, then by late February.  Now we are in early March and still no delivery or a precise date when this will happen.

Neither the Microsoft rep nor the LAR seem to have a date certain or able to provide any information.

Is any other school having a similar problem getting this Student media or is this situation unique to our school?

Thank you.

Amin,

We have had Office 2013 available for students, faculty and staff to download or order media since the beginning of January.

Sandi-
Is the media available from your LAR or from Kivuto?

Sandi, We do not use Kivuto.  We get the student media from the LAR and distribute it through our Bookstores.

Thank you.

I was just told by our LAR Microsoft is replacing Office University 2010 with Office 365 University, which I can’t understand because from what I understand Office 365 is a 1-year subscription not a perpetual license.  Has anyone else heard anything?

Hi Marg,

Thank you very much for the update.  I hope this will happen soon.  The net result of this delay is this:  3 or 4 months of delay is at least 25% of the contract’s annual life.  And a corresponding waste of the University’s money and the ‘announced service’ to its student community.

I checked in and we don't have media yet but shipping is expected Mar 11. The media maker, Arvato, is now taking orders.  So I would expect LARs should be able to fulfill once shipping starts

I don't understand why a vendor spends a lot of promo money and then does not have media available at launch. Now I have been told the problem has been corrected, so we will see at next launch.

Amin,

We have had Office 2013 available for students, faculty and staff to download or order media since the beginning of January.

Thanks to you and to Christopher for the links.

We currently only cover students who purchase laptops through our student laptop program (SLP), through our Campus Agreement's student option.  Right now Office Pro Plus is installed as part of the laptop image, and the cost is built into the cost of the laptop.  Because students frequently want access to the media as well for reinstallation, they currently come to our office to purchase the media.  It's always a hassle because the vendors have made it difficult to identify the SLP purchases.  It also presents a problem as I want to move the sales to Kivuto (formerly e-Academy).

But now, with the move to various virtual and cloud based models, I'm wondering if we should simply stop covering them with the student option and instead have them purchase a license under this new option.  Over four years it's a fairly low cost, and that would take us out of the picture altogether and while I assume we could have it pre-installed on the machine under the license they purchase, after that the student would be responsible for downloading and/or accessing it, on their own as their relationship with be with the vendor.

I assume they would be given serial numbers or activation codes at the point of purchase but I'm not entirely sure if there are licensing concerns I'm overlooking.
