Apologies - I did a "publish to web" which supposed to provide a public URL, but I guess it's stopping people at a login prompt.

Let me see if I can do it differently, to avoid attaching a doc that the whole list might not want.

When we went through this it drove us crazy as there was a certain lack of...certainty, among some of the people we talked to.

We are also doing a combination of virtual packaging, moving toward primarily XenApp, although we also use AppV.  We have begun to deliver some applications to our campus labs virtually, but only faculty and staff can access a virtual desktop remotely.

We don't cover our students for the desktop apps (beyond the labs, covered in the CA), except for particpants in our laptop program, for whom we signed an addendum to our CA.  But they are not covered for remote access to a virtual desktop.

We have Core CALs for both faculty and students, and an additional CAL for the student laptop program participants.

We have been selected by IBM for a Software License Review (SLR).  This will be our first SLR.  Has anyone experienced an SLR with IBM and willing to share their experience so we know what to expect?  It would be good to know what is covered, what IBM’s approach is and how extensive it is so we can be better prepared.

Is anyone out there working with VMware on enterprise licensing?  We have a limited ELA and have been trying to understand their pricing and they don’t seem to have a standard academic price list.  Has anyone been able to obtain such a thing?  If yes I would love to see it!

Other thoughts on working with VMware as a vendor?

Feel free to call, email directly, or respond to the forum.

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Following up on Home Use Program authentication, it looks to me as if a user can go to this page:

http://www.microsofthup.com/hupus/home.aspx?dialect_id=en-US&country_id=US

click on the "Don't Know Your Program Code? Click Here." link, enter their email address, and if their email domain is on the approved list, Microsoft will email them a link they can click on to purchase without further authentication. In other words, no program code entry required. That's a problem for those schools using the same email domain for students and facstaff.

Anyone want to confirm?

LICENSING Digest - 13 Feb 2013 to 14 Feb 2013 (#2013-19)

The University of Cincinnati has been trying to get the Student media for the Office 2013 suite for the past 3+ months, as part of our EES agreement that includes the Student option.

Initially, we were told it will be around mid-January, then sometime in February, then by late February.  Now we are in early March and still no delivery or a precise date when this will happen.

Neither the Microsoft rep nor the LAR seem to have a date certain or able to provide any information.

Is any other school having a similar problem getting this Student media or is this situation unique to our school?

Thank you.

LICENSING Digest - 13 Feb 2013 to 14 Feb 2013 (#2013-19)

Hello,

Does anyone have a Microsoft Select or Select Plus price list for higher education that they can share?  Our reseller used to provide this information, but has stated for the past few years that pulling the price lists together is too tedious.   While my preference would be a price list with products and higher education pricing, a price list that was limited to a listing of products only would be helpful as our reseller sometimes sells us the wrong part number and it would be a lot easier to validate the quotes we are receiving if we could compare quotes with related items from the price list.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I recently heard that Adobe has changed their concurrent licensing so that it can ONLY be used for PCs/Macs in the physical labs where the products are taught.

I have heard that faculty who prepare the curriculum that teach using Adobe products (PhotoShop, Illustrator, etc.) cannot use concurrent licensing.  This makes no sense to me whatsoever.  To not allow the faculty who actually do the TEACHING to be under the same license causes significant issues, with one of them being Adobe shooting themselves in the foot.

If we cannot cover faculty who teach in these labs with the same concurrent license we will not be able to run the latest version of Adobe software in the labs because we will not be able to upgrade faculty licenses.  The funding comes from two different sources.

We will have faculty in various departments using various...

Hello, With the increasing cost of Adobe software, the restrictions they place on extendable PDF forms, and the fact that Adobe has no monopoly on PDF forms generation, we are looking to replace Acrobat Professional on our campus with an acceptable, compatible, open source or lower cost PDF forms creator. Of the fee-based Acrobat Pro competitors, CutePDF offers an unlimited user, perpetual, academic site license of CutePDF Pro for $9500. That is a one-time charge, with free support and upgrades for the life of the product, unusually favorable for this age. Do any of you have experience with free or lower cost alternatives to Adobe's Acrobat? I would appreciate any recommendations you might have. Thank you! Hi all,

Here at LSU, we’re dealing with some issues with our concurrent license for Adobe Creative Suite.  Until now, we’ve used a single concurrent  license pool for all of our computer labs and classrooms.  Adobe is now telling us that we need to purchase a separate pool for each lab facility.  Has anyone else dealt with this issue?

I’d also be interested to know how you’re handling virtual licenses for Adobe CS, if it applies to you.

Any advice, on or off list, would be gratefully received.

I would love to hear what other schools have decided to do with Lynda.com in the last year or two. The company seems to be ending, or trying hard to end, any sort of program other than full Lynda Campus licenses. At minimum it feels they are committed to making it so difficult to use any other type of license that we will eventually give up and pay the seemingly over priced and non-negotiable rate for the site license.

I'm pulling my hair out here, I can't even seem to get a quote for anything other than a campus agreement. I've asked numerous times and our rep dodges the question and continues trying to explain why we really want a lynda campus agreement. Our users seem to like the service, and the campus agreement would be nice, but the cost just seems out of this world. They want numerous dollars per FTE, based on full FTE count, for a service that I just can't see having that high an adoption rate...

All,

It appears that there is some confusion regarding the concurrent licensing policies from Adobe. I would encourage everyone to go to the URL below to look at the language surrounding concurrent licensing.

http://www.adobe.com/volume-licensing/policies.html#concurrency-policy

If an institution is operating under the policy as outlined, they are allowed to serve licenses up to multiple student labs and classrooms physically located within the campus. It is important to note, however, that the policy states that the computers accessing the software must be owned and/or leased by the institution.

I want to purchase a Mac app for an internal client, but at present this is what I have to do:
1) Get their personal AppleID username and password
2) Delete their credit card info and billing address and put in my university credit card info and billing address
3) Purchase the app
4) Delete my university credit card info and billing address
5) Have the user log in to the Mac App Store and reset their info - then install the app from the Purchased section
6) Get the receipt from the user for credit card reconciliation
There has got to be a better way. We've spent years tying software to computers, not people (people come and go). Lots of our users already have AppleIDs that match their e-mail addresses here (and we can't merge AppleIDs at this point). And of course there's the issue of sales tax (which is why I'm following the...

Hi,
How are you folks handling software updates for Mountain Lion?

The Helpdesk staff here reports that they purchased and installed Mountain Lion upgrades with no problem.  Now when they try to select the Apple icon, and select software updates, the display shows how many updates need to be run, they select install, and they get an App Store login screen.

How are you managing this?
Does everyone with a Mac have to get a unique App Store login?  Or do we have to share the login that was used for purchase?  That wouldn't be pretty.

It looks like Microsoft is making changes to MSDN-AA and the old Dreamspark program.  MSDN-AA is now known as DreamSpark Premium and Dreamspark (the old standard version) is no longer free.  It now costs $99 to set up standard DreamSpark.

DreamSpark and MSDN-AA provide a wide variety of software to students in IT-related fields for free.  They can get copies of WIndows Server, programming tools, web development tools, etc.  The two programs were/are great offerings, though not always presented in ways that were easy to understand.

I'd been struggling over the last couple of weeks with the Dreamspark changes and getting nowhere with the support group.  Then, over the weekend yet another new set of FAQs and information pages went up on the site.

If one of your departments or colleges has an MSDN-AA, it doesn't look like too much other than the name is changing.  The...

We are seeking information on implementing the Student Option under the Microsoft EES and are having difficulties obtaining information on how the program works.  Specifically, how is the software distributed, how do you get students to sign the MS paperwork upon graduation, do you use a chargeback model and if so how does that work, and any other particulars I may have not mentioned.  We are moving quickly on this so any information and/or suggestions from someone who has done this before would be much appreciated.  Also, if there is a MS website I have overlooked that would be helpful as well, but I have found their published information to be more sales oriented and doesn’t contain much functional information.

It sounds a lot like the existing VDA license.

Hi All, I recently obtained data from our networking folks regarding the operating systems used on our network. Of the laptops & desktops, 39% were Macs. This really surprised me & I wondered if this is a typical figure for universities or if the data was skewed in some way. Do any of you have measures of OS laptop/desktop market share at your organizations? About two years ago I tallied our research software to see what percent had native Mac or Linux versions. They were tied at 35% for each (i.e. 65% were Windows-only). If Mac market share really has increased on campuses to around 39%, the software vendors may want to reconsider the value of developing for the Mac. Running Windows in a VM is possible, but Mac often want to simplify their lives not deal with two operating systems. Cheers, Bob P.S. Linux has 1.6% of our latop/desktop network devices. All these figures exclude iPhones, Android devices, etc. ========================================================= Bob...
