This EDUCAUSE constituent group focuses on the issues involved in blending the corporate interests of software providers with the unique licensing needs of higher education institutions. Among the challenges are institutional environments in which many users need to use different computers in more than one venue (public lab, dorm room, office, home, research lab), and user identities and software needs change from one semester to the next as students move in and out of the institutions and change courses. Discussion may focus on how best to come to consensus on higher education"s needs and how to formulate a position we can all take to software providers. This group meets at the EDUCAUSE annual conference and uses the electronic discussion list to discuss issues throughout the year.
All participants must follow the Participation Guidelines.

Apparently there has been more info about this posted to the [CIO] listserve than to this [LICENSING] listserv.
Is it possible to share with this listserv what is going on? Apparently there is some info available about an "invitation/registration" process?
I was forwarded this message from the [CIO] listserv:
Hi All,
We have been selected by IBM for a Software License Review (SLR). This will be our first SLR. Has anyone experienced an SLR with IBM and willing to share their experience so we know what to expect? It would be good to know what is covered, what IBM’s approach is and how extensive it is so we can be better prepared.
Thanks,
Tom

Is anyone using Techsoup http://techsoup.org as a resource for obtaining software? If so, can you let me know the advantages and disadvantages of what they offer. One of our staff members pointed out to me that they are selling Adobe Photoshop for $80.00 less that I can get for with my Level 3 CLP.

Is anyone out there working with VMware on enterprise licensing? We have a limited ELA and have been trying to understand their pricing and they don’t seem to have a standard academic price list. Has anyone been able to obtain such a thing? If yes I would love to see it!
Other thoughts on working with VMware as a vendor?
Feel free to call, email directly, or respond to the forum.
Thanks in advance for any insights!

The University of Cincinnati has been trying to get the Student media for the Office 2013 suite for the past 3+ months, as part of our EES agreement that includes the Student option.
Initially, we were told it will be around mid-January, then sometime in February, then by late February. Now we are in early March and still no delivery or a precise date when this will happen.
Neither the Microsoft rep nor the LAR seem to have a date certain or able to provide any information.
Is any other school having a similar problem getting this Student media or is this situation unique to our school?
Thank you.

Hello,
Does anyone have a Microsoft Select or Select Plus price list for higher education that they can share? Our reseller used to provide this information, but has stated for the past few years that pulling the price lists together is too tedious. While my preference would be a price list with products and higher education pricing, a price list that was limited to a listing of products only would be helpful as our reseller sometimes sells us the wrong part number and it would be a lot easier to validate the quotes we are receiving if we could compare quotes with related items from the price list.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Michael,
At NAU we’re looking for a solution now. We already license Blackboard Learn campus-wide. Don’t overlook the Content Collection features built into that product if you have it on campus. It might be all you need for large file transfer

I recently heard that Adobe has changed their concurrent licensing so that it can ONLY be used for PCs/Macs in the physical labs where the products are taught.
I have heard that faculty who prepare the curriculum that teach using Adobe products (PhotoShop, Illustrator, etc.) cannot use concurrent licensing. This makes no sense to me whatsoever. To not allow the faculty who actually do the TEACHING to be under the same license causes significant issues, with one of them being Adobe shooting themselves in the foot.
If we cannot cover faculty who teach in these labs with the same concurrent license we will not be able to run the latest version of Adobe software in the labs because we will not be able to upgrade faculty licenses. The funding comes from two different sources.
We will have faculty in various departments using various...
I am working with others to develop a centralized software license management policy for our school. Our team is interested in learning what policies are in effect at other institutions.
If your school has such a policy, can you please send me the link to the policy or a copy of your guidelines?
Thanks for very much for your help.

Hi all,
Here at LSU, we’re dealing with some issues with our concurrent license for Adobe Creative Suite. Until now, we’ve used a single concurrent license pool for all of our computer labs and classrooms. Adobe is now telling us that we need to purchase a separate pool for each lab facility. Has anyone else dealt with this issue?
I’d also be interested to know how you’re handling virtual licenses for Adobe CS, if it applies to you.
Any advice, on or off list, would be gratefully received.
Sincerely,
Mike

All,
It appears that there is some confusion regarding the concurrent licensing policies from Adobe. I would encourage everyone to go to the URL below to look at the language surrounding concurrent licensing.
http://www.adobe.com/volume-licensing/policies.html#concurrency-policy
If an institution is operating under the policy as outlined, they are allowed to serve licenses up to multiple student labs and classrooms physically located within the campus. It is important to note, however, that the policy states that the computers accessing the software must be owned and/or leased by the institution.

Time flies and I should have sent this last week!
Our face to face meeting is Tuesday November 6 in Denver, 4.30-6.30 PM Mountain time. Room 605/607
I was excited we were not conflicting with the opening reception and then I figured out why, it is election day.
I already have received two agenda suggestions:
- Net plus licensing
- Presentation and discussion of a working group on VDI/VCL licensing issues. Sharon Pitt (GMU will lead)
So let me know soon for additional...

We are seeking information on implementing the Student Option under the Microsoft EES and are having difficulties obtaining information on how the program works. Specifically, how is the software distributed, how do you get students to sign the MS paperwork upon graduation, do you use a chargeback model and if so how does that work, and any other particulars I may have not mentioned. We are moving quickly on this so any information and/or suggestions from someone who has done this before would be much appreciated. Also, if there is a MS website I have overlooked that would be helpful as well, but I have found their published information to be more sales oriented and doesn’t contain much functional information.
Thanks!

TO: Enoch and Kelly,

I am hearing some talk of an upcoming substantial change to Student Select by Microsoft wrt Office and Windows. While UT is not a Student Select shop, the talk I am hearing is significant, so I wanted to go to the source (Microsoft) and get official word, if any, of an expected change and what effect it may have on various institutions. And of course, I wanted to know if there is going to be any effect on Campus Agreement.
Now it could be a joke, since the date is suspicious (end of March, means 1 April 2012 change)…
So what I am hearing is that Office 2010 Pro Plus will end as an offering for Student Select at end of March 2012. Same...
