We use a Visualware product called: MyConnection Server. If someone has complaints, we send them a link to the speedtest, and they can send us the results. We also use it ourselves after an install. It is a pretty cheap annual cost. It is a nice way to quickly get some objective results beyond: “the network is slow.”

We use this too at DU – Thumbs up! Great Local test to eliminate the LAN/WLAN as the potential bottleneck.

Sometimes we hear random complains about the “network” becoming slow on campus, we monitor the network with Cacti and other tools to get a general idea of what is happening.  One thing we would really like to do is push different types of traffic through the network and monitor how that traffic is handled.  We currently use iperf for throughput testing but we would like something more robust.  Does anyone have a cost effective solution to do these types of tests?

In our case it is on a Win 2008 file/webserver that does other things – nothing too heavy on it.
