Those of you who are Juniper shops, do any of you use EX-2200’s in production?  I’ve looked at the specifications and they appear to be similar to systems I bought 10 years ago, but I’m being pressured to cut costs.

Comments (on the units and their use/functionality)?

Greetings netman list

I have been gifted an SMC 8848M tigerstack switch with no passwords.

Does anyone have any info on how to reset one of these to factory default without having to ship it back to the distributor?

I have only found references to a version 1 manual that had the procedure on it but I cannot for the life of me find it.

If anyone has a clue how this is accomplished I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

All,

We’re filling out our yearly USNWR survey, and I’m struggling with the numbers to report. The wired section is fairly straight forward to report on, but the wireless section isn’t so much.

We’ve never had the data-sheet client numbers connected to our wireless infrastructure, so we only have our very own real-world numbers (avg 1200, max 2100). We are running three Aruba sup II’s and have (mostly) AP-65’s with a single campus SSID and an open guest network campus-wide. I’ve heard the 65’s were supposedly designed for 24 simultaneous users, and well, that gives us 14K theoretical client connections.

How have you quantified a number for, “indicate the total approximate number of simultaneous users that can be...

We are beginning to get requests for Macs on campus.  As we are a Windows domain the two areas of concern for me are security and control.  I know others have Macs on their domains so I’m interested how others are handling the introduction of Macs on their network.   My main questions are related to antivirus, patch management, and any software that may not run on a Mac.

What other issues do you have with Macs on your network?

Greetings!

Please share which wall-mount cabinets you recommend for keeping network gear safe in shared-spaces. Here are some of the requirements we have identified:

Strong enough to hold a heavy APC 1500 UPS, 3 switches, and patch-panels
Deep enough to support long switches
Good cable-management
Smooth, rounded edges to prevent injury and cable damage
Supports a standard external padlock
Good ventilation to prevent overheating

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

We are currently using ATI for our loud speakers on campus.  The ATI system is used for chimes, sirens, and verbalizing emergency broadcast messages over the speakers.  The speakers are loud enough that we hear them inside the buildings.  In the past, ATI has done well at accommodating RAVE into their interface.  We use RAVE for our texting portion.  When we need to text an alert out to our Faculty/Staff and students, we go to the ATI interface and click on some button that invokes RAVE to text out the message.  We love this setup because it gives one interface to our emergency responders.  They don’t have to remember how to logon to this system and that other system when they are in ‘crazy mode’ trying to respond to an emergency.

Now, we have added Alertus.  We are using Alertus to send a pop...

We are looking for best practice to monitor our NS records to make sure they are propagating properly across the internet.

I’ve setup check_dnsext (http://exchange.nagios.org/directory/Plugins/Internet-Domains-and-WHOIS/check_dnsext/details) as part of our Icinga installation and it seems to be working very well.

We are polling public DNS servers (Google, UltraDNS, GTEI.net) for our NS records.  We tried OpenDNS but they were not giving back proper results.

Does anyone else do this or have a better way?

Sorry for the cross posting.  Normally try to avoid it.  I posted on Security and there wasn’t much of a response.  So I thought I might try here.

Anyone have any experience and willing to chat via email or phone?  I can summarize if there is any interest.

I’d love to know how long you’ve used them, bandwidth and population sizes, how you are utilizing the box, what protections you have active, if you are using Application based rules, etc.  Good things, not so good things.

Thanks.

We have traditionally been a Packetshaper shop for a very long time.  I’ve grown a bit dis-satisfied with a number of things over the years, and it looks like we will need to make some fairly expensive upgrades in the not too distant future to one of my shapers.

Plus, my confidence in the deep packet inspection abilities of the shaper is not as high as it once was.

I’m also looking at a next generation firewall and my confidence is much higher in the dpi capabilities of that device for denying stuff like p2p.

So, that all said, I’ve been looking at a product to equalize my bandwidth more than shape it.  I have seen people on this list mention the NetEqualizer quite often, and would be interested...

Hello. We are currently using Bradford on our campus for NAC. We often receive complaints about how difficult the registration process is and why we require antivirus since "Mac's never get viruses." This has prompted us to start researching the future of NAC. What are other schools doing in this area? If you have gone away from using a NAC, what approach are you using now to get the similar functionality? How do you authenticate guest users? How do you disable access for those students who violate policy? Looking forward to the feedback, Jason -- Jason R. We are looking to save a few bucks on an upcoming campus core upgrade by using 3rd party 10 Gbps SFP+ optics in place of Cisco’s optics. Actually the prices are a fraction of Cisco’s.  We are considering Champion One and Transition Network.  Has anyone used either of these products?  Have they been reliable?  Are there other vendors that you would recommend?

I have been intending to diving into IPv6 this Summer.  My supervisor mentioned another technology that he heard of that, I guess, is gaining a little notoriety in Europe -- RINA (http://www.ionary.com/vis.html), Recursive InterNetwork Architecture.

I started to read a little on the subject.  Given that I have never heard of this nor have I heard any vendor mention it or support for it, I can't see it gaining traction any time soon.  But I thought I'd pose the question, just in case...

Anyone?

Good afternoon, NETMAN -

The West/Southwest Regional conference deadline is approaching.  Is anyone attending, and interested in facilitating NETMAN discussions?

Let me repeat -

The Network Management Constituent Group (NETMAN CG) has had a long
standing tradition of meeting at Educause national to share knowledge
and make contacts. Many of you have shared in these conversations,
and have benefited from them.

Last year, the NETMAN CG meeting were also held at the regional
Midwest conference in Chicago with great success.

We have the opportunity to continue this growing tradition by holding
sessions at the other regional conferences as well. We are,
therefore, looking for facilitators for the other regional EDUCAUSE events

Greetings,

Does anyone know of a way to speed up BGP convergence time?  We are dual homed and run BGP to prefer one provider while  the other is used as a backup.  When the primary goes down due to a failure or planned maintenance, it takes about 30 seconds for inbound traffic to fail over to the backup provider resulting in an outage for the users.  If someone knows of a way to speed up the process and reduce the down time we would appreciate it.

From what I've read, the proposed "Stop Online Piracy Act" (SOPA) looks like it would add a big mess to DNS, forcing a layer of top-down controls into a system that is distributed by design. Here's the bill: http://judiciary.house.gov/hearings/pdf/112%20HR%203261.pdf That is ugly enough, even without considering the possibilities for abuse. In addition, EFF suggests that the legislation is vague enough to have wider-ranging effects, e.g. touching VPN and SSH clients. This is probably a shot in the dark, but I figured that I would put it out here anyway.

Is anyone else using CSI Software for their Club Management and Campus Recreation software? Our Rec Center uses it, it does fingerprint scanning, badge scanning, etc. for admissions to the rec enter and workout rooms. Apparently the servers are hosted off site with CSI, so all queries are transmitted via our internet connection to them.

Our Rec Center has been having issues with response time for the badge scans/fingerprints, reports, really anything that requires a query to the off site servers. It looks to me like this uses an SSL connection between the software and the server. On these same machines the staff reports no issues with anything else. Web response is great, email, I even ran some speed/capacity tests and they all come back positive. I even prioritized this on our internet connection. Their support has been less than...

Good morning, NETMAN -

On Thursday, May 30, there will be an opportunity for the NETMAN CG to host a poster session on NETMAN.  We have our own poster, that EDUCAUSE can bring to the conference and set up for a 1:30pm poster session.

There is also an opportunity to host a breakfast roundtable from 7:30 to 8:30am that morning.

Are any NETMAN members attending EDUCAUSE Southeast?  Would you be interested in this opportunity to network with your fellow networkers?

Drop me a note, if interested, and I can get you on the agenda for Southeast!

Hello colleagues,
We are looking into integrating other vendors into what has been till now a 100% Cisco network infrastructure.  Soon we'll test one floor of a building containing two computer labs with an access layer of Juniper (EX2200).  One big test will be to see how the IGMP snooping integrates with the Cisco Distro and Core when trying to multicast image (GHOST, rrgghh) the labs.  In particular, we will be looking to ensure that the multicast is only going to the ports that have requested it.  Has anyone else tested a scenario like this and if so, care to share results either to group or privately.  If it is okay, i'll anonomyze and summarize any information I receive.

The other thing we will be keeping a close eye on is issues with spanning tree.  Our network is PVSTP, which does not communicate with open-standards STP, RSTP, MSTP.  So far in our testing we have not run into problems: all switches forward...

Good morning,

We're looking to deploy System Center 2012 SP1. I'm interested in deploying a distributed-server installation instead of continuing with a single-server as we currently run.

My main question has anyone gone to the distributed-server model specially for Operations? We'd like to split up the roles, but at a minimal standpoint - unlike what is depicted on Microsoft's planning guide. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh298610.aspx

We'd be deploying an SQL database dedicated for System Center apps, an Operations Manager server, a Virtual Machine Manager, and an Endpoint Protection Manager server.

Thank you,

I am passing this on, on behalf of my friends who run the network at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. LBNL, or Berkeley Lab, is a science research laboratory located adjacent to the UC Berkeley campus. It is not to be (although it often is) confused with Lawrence Livermore National Lab. Before we dump a bunch of money into servers, I am looking for for anyone to share their experiences with pushing near 10gb/s from a single server. Our goal is more based around bit/per/sec then packets/per/sec (large data transfers). We are comfortable with kernel tuning, jumbo frames, etc. We are interested in specific hardware that has been used to achieve near 10gb/s speeds.
