Peg,

We use the IDEA system for all end of course student evaluations and the IDEA Center has done research on student ratings in traditional vs. online courses. It is specific to the questions on the IDEA student evaluation but they did find that student ratings for online courses are similar to that of online courses. The research report is here and it’s worth reading even if your institution doesn’t use IDEA: http://www.theideacenter.org/sites/default/files/Research%20Report%207.pdf.

Both ScreenFlow (Mac-only) and Camtasia (Mac/Win) support subtitling.  Both are excellent screencast applications but I prefer ScreenFlow because it creates MPEG-4 files whereas Camtasia requires Flash for subtitles and that pretty much rules out mobile.

If these screencastsare made with some other, less expensive apps, I suggest using free, open source apps.  There are many but I prefer Jubler for creating subtitles and Subler for installing them in MPEG-4 files. These are Mac apps.

I've recently come across CapScribe which is free to education and plan to look it over carefully.  It looks very promising: http://www.inclusivemedia.ca/services/capscribe.shtml This is also Mac-only.

Hello!

In creating accessible online and blended courses, one of the challenges we are dealing with is making sure faculty created videos (narrated PowerPoints, screencasts, etc.) are accessible.  I would love to hear how others are handling this.  Do you recommend/require that these videos be closed captioned?  If so, who is responsible for creating the closed captions?  Do you have staff on campus that do this or is it the faculty member's responsibility?  Or do you use a service?  Can you recommend any software that helps someone easily create closed captions or a service that can provide this?

Thank you so much,
Andrea

Hi Dylan,

My name is Edwige Simon and I work for the Anderson Language Technology Center at CU Boulder (http://altec.colorado.edu) . My colleague Courtney Fell and myself just recently created a How-To manual and an infographic to help faculty with building hybrid courses. I have attached the infographic, let us know if you would like the Illustrator file so that you can modify it to suit the needs of your faculty. Here is  a link to the resources manual: http://tinyurl.com/goinghybridatcu . We will gladly share a copy with you so that you can modify it as well. We put a Creative Commons license on these documents so that they can be transformed as long as you refer back to us in the new version you create!
I hope this helps!

Hi everyone!

In our faculty development program, several instructors have been asking about specific resources or strategies that would be helpful in designing an online or blended course for a shortened term, like in the summer. Turning a 16-week course into an 8-week (or less) course can definitely be a challenge, and even though we have some advice to offer, I'm looking for more ideas.

Do you all have any recommendations that I could pass along?

Thanks!

Good afternoon!

As I am sure is true with others, we are concerned about student outcomes, as well as the declining numbers of students acquiring full complements of textbooks due to their cost through the bookstore, which in our instance is the sole vehicle provided for students using Financial Aid. In order to facilitate the distribution of a larger number of materials to all of our students, we have been exploring a number of options, including acquiring digital course content either directly from the vendor/publisher and embedding the cost into a course fee or other channels and participating in a consortium of institutions to develop Open Educational Resources. However, we appear to...

All -

We received a tech call from a student here at Granite State College who is taking an online course while in China (a US citizen).

However, the course includes video and audio media streaming from our Kaltura service, and none of the media is accessible because of the Great Firewall (Chinese government) blocking this information.

It appears, too, that Dropbox service is not available – or at least not reliably available – to account holders while in China.

Any suggestions here? I suppose we could smash a video or audio file down to something that could be attached as an email, though I'm not sure if that would get us in trouble too.

Thx – Steve

I’m rethinking how we prepare faculty for “flipping the classroom” at our institution—how we help them think about what flipping is/means and how they actually do it.

As we reshape our efforts,  I wonder if anyone on the list is willing to share (on or off list) or point me to curricula, workshop agendas or other resources that have been effective on your campus.   If you found that something didn’t work and believe it should be avoided at all costs I’m also interested in hearing that.

Happy New Year everyone!

The 2nd annual LMS unconference (a NERCOMP SIG*, an unSIG) will be held on January 25, 2013 at the Southbridge Hotel and Conference Center in Southbridge, MA. This is a unique opportunity to approach LMS issues in a platform neutral environment, sharing and learning strategies for system assessment, implementation, training, design and support in all relevant areas of the campus.

The unSIG format empowers participants to craft the conference program and provides opportunities for them to become the presenters. Participants, rather than event organizers, determine the topics covered in session tracks. This means that the agenda is not predetermined months in advance, but instead will include the issues and concerns that are most significant to attendees on the day of the conference.

Along with standard LMS issues such as adoption, implementation and...

What resources do your faculty use to “observe” instructors and their online courses, as they would observe a F2F instructor and course? Often these observations are a regular part of a program review or one’s P&T process. Some faculty feel they don’t know how to observe an online course as they haven’t taken or taught one. I’ve found a smattering of rubrics at other institutions, but would like to get feedback from this group.

Hi Everyone,

I'm wondering what your thoughts are regarding the use of Instructional Designers in the development of Blended/Online courses: do you think they are fully utilized? For example: At your institution do faculty consult with them on the how to develop better discussions, how to write course objectives, basically: how to design an effective (or more effective) course? Or, do faculty primarily view them, and use them as technicians?

Thoughts, comments...

Our institution is currently in the process of revising our faculty certification and training required for all our faculty who will teach online. Currently, our training consists of synchronous LMS tool training (delivered via webinars) and an asynchronous online portion that requires, on average, two hours to complete.

After reviewing feedback from faculty and administration and researching certification programs at other institutions, we see there is a need for more robust preparation and training for our online faculty. Hi all,

In this short video, Sir John Daniels lays out his 3 trends to watch: shift from public HE to private for-profit, OER, and mobile learning.
I found the first section most interesting - the idea that there is higher quality in for-profit online learning due to division of labor and specialization.  It seems like most of the press on for-profits in this realm has been on enrollment strategies and financial aid issues rather than the actual quality of the end product - courses and degrees. Do you agree that having individual faculty members handle most aspects of online courses results in low economy of scale and inconsistency in quality? Are there models for course and degree development in some of your institutions which address such concerns?
