I'm wondering if anyone has policy in place where faculty can share or assign ownership of online content to the institution, and if so, are there examples of verbiage that can be shared?

I’m rethinking how we prepare faculty for “flipping the classroom” at our institution—how we help them think about what flipping is/means and how they actually do it.

As we reshape our efforts,  I wonder if anyone on the list is willing to share (on or off list) or point me to curricula, workshop agendas or other resources that have been effective on your campus.   If you found that something didn’t work and believe it should be avoided at all costs I’m also interested in hearing that.

Thank you in advance,

Hi Kristen,

At the University of Nevada, Reno, we use ProctorU for many of our online exams, which works fine for students studying internationally. However, if a student is taking a paper-based exam, we still send those to proctors. We have the following information available to students:

“If you live outside the United States, you will need to include a memo on your proctor’s letterhead, indicating his or her title/position and willingness to proctor your exam when you submit your test request form. To speed the process, please include your proctor’s complete daytime/office phone and fax number (country code, city code and number) and an email address whenever possible. We also ask that your proctor and anyone answering his or her office phone speak and understand English so that...

Hello!

We are seeing an increase in the number of faculty who are coming to our institution with experience in online teaching.  Right now, we require all faculty who are new to teaching online at our institution (even if they have taught online somewhere else) to go through a formal training program and course development process focused on the pedagogy of teaching online and developing an online course based on our best practice guidelines for online course design.  We are currently starting to rethink this process as it relates to faculty with online teaching experience and would love to hear how others are handling this.

If you require faculty teaching online to go through a formal training program and course development process, how do you handle experienced online faculty who have taught online at other institutions but not at your institution? Do they still have to go through the...

Learning science research shows we can help students learn STEM skills. Deep learning, formative feedback, ... Unfortunately, these practices don't make it into classrooms. The Dolfinity project aims to change that.

Dolfinity has three parts:

1. A guide to designing skill courses based on learning science research. The document improves as we learn more about learning.

2. Open source software to help anyone create dolfins. Dolfins are Web sites that replace textbooks and lectures. "Dolfin" is an acronym for research-based practices: Deep learning, Outcome-based Learning, Formative feedback, Interaction with experts, and Nudging students.

3. A community, to (1) promote the use and development of learning science, (2) help people make dolfins, and (3) improve the guide and the software.

Happy New Year to all!

I’m sorting through the requirements and fees for the state authorization project and am stuck on Ohio. I’ve contacted them but waiting to hear back so wondering if someone on this listserv could help.

I interpret Ohio’s fees as follows:

$1000 application fee plus initial program per the following schedule:

Baccalaureate - $3,000 per program

Master’s -  $5,000 per program

Doctor - $5,000 per program

This is for any online program that triggers physical presence there, e.g. has a practicum or clinical. So, if I have 4 bacc and 5 master’s programs that trigger...

Happy New Year everyone!

The 2nd annual LMS unconference (a NERCOMP SIG*, an unSIG) will be held on January 25, 2013 at the Southbridge Hotel and Conference Center in Southbridge, MA. This is a unique opportunity to approach LMS issues in a platform neutral environment, sharing and learning strategies for system assessment, implementation, training, design and support in all relevant areas of the campus.

The unSIG format empowers participants to craft the conference program and provides opportunities for them to become the presenters. Participants, rather than event organizers, determine the topics covered in session tracks. This means that the agenda is not predetermined months in advance, but instead will include the issues and concerns that are most significant to attendees on the day of the conference.

Along with standard LMS issues such as adoption, implementation and...

Hello,

We’ve been using Blackboard Collaborate (formerly Wimba) and it’s been a good system for us, albeit a little on the pricey side. Does anyone use a system that’s not strictly geared toward the higher ed market, such as Webex or GoToMeeting?

What resources do your faculty use to “observe” instructors and their online courses, as they would observe a F2F instructor and course? Often these observations are a regular part of a program review or one’s P&T process. Some faculty feel they don’t know how to observe an online course as they haven’t taken or taught one. I’ve found a smattering of rubrics at other institutions, but would like to get feedback from this group.

Hi Everyone,

I'm wondering what your thoughts are regarding the use of Instructional Designers in the development of Blended/Online courses: do you think they are fully utilized? For example: At your institution do faculty consult with them on the how to develop better discussions, how to write course objectives, basically: how to design an effective (or more effective) course? Or, do faculty primarily view them, and use them as technicians?

Thoughts, comments...

Dear Colleagues,

Apologies for the cross posting.

Our institution is currently in the process of revising our faculty certification and training required for all our faculty who will teach online. Currently, our training consists of synchronous LMS tool training (delivered via webinars) and an asynchronous online portion that requires, on average, two hours to complete.

After reviewing feedback from faculty and administration and researching certification programs at other institutions, we see there is a need for more robust preparation and training for our online faculty. Our goal is for this revamped training to be unique and innovative but also based on best practices, research, proven models, etc.

Our current LMS does not allow instructors to save marked up documents directly back to the LMS. Instructors like receiving and marking up papers online. However, the problem comes in returning papers to students. The process is not fluid; and has a host of issues.

·         Graded papers need to be uploaded back into the LMS shared document library.

Hi all,

In this short video, Sir John Daniels lays out his 3 trends to watch: shift from public HE to private for-profit, OER, and mobile learning.
I found the first section most interesting - the idea that there is higher quality in for-profit online learning due to division of labor and specialization.  It seems like most of the press on for-profits in this realm has been on enrollment strategies and financial aid issues rather than the actual quality of the end product - courses and degrees. Do you agree that having individual faculty members handle most aspects of online courses results in low economy of scale and inconsistency in quality? Are there models for course and degree development in some of your institutions which address such concerns?

We are in the process of offering some online courses. We see that one of the requirements is to have in place effective procedures through which to ensure that the student registering for the course is the same student who participates in and completes the course and receives academic procedures. My question is, what procedures or technologies do you use to meet this requirement at your institution.
