Good Morning everyone!

I hope this message finds everyone well :-)  Bellow is a Call for Presentations for an upcoming NERCOMP (regional Educause affiliate) SIG.  Please feel free to forward to your colleagues who might be interested :-) Thanks in advance!

Call for Presentations

for the 2013

Academic Communities of Practice: Learning and Engagement Outside the Classroom

 NERCOMP SIG

The campus is rich with opportunities to learn outside of the classroom. Up to now flyers have been posted next to elevators to let people know of some of these events, people form ad-hoc groups to support their learning, and student clubs band together for a common purpose. Communities of Practice already exist in Academia! So, the question is, how do we best leverage technology, and how do we break down institutional barriers and existing orthodoxies to help support a new, asynchronous, community of practice that helps not just our students, but also our faculty, staff and alumni.

In May 2013 NERCOMP will be hosting a SIG on this topic and we would like to invite you to send us your proposal for a presentation on the topic! Communities of Practice can be at the course-level, the department-level, college-level, or even the discipline-level transcending the traditional college silos.  Proposals should be 200-300 words in length and should indicate the format of your presentation.  Each presentation will be allotted 45-50 minutes, including time for audience Q&A.

Presentation proposals can, for example,  focus around case studies of established Academic Communities of Practice; best practices in implementing, maintaining and sustaining these communities from a technical perspective, a sociological perspective and/or an academic perspective. These are just recommendations, please feel free to think outside the confines of these examples.

Interested presenters should email Apostolos Koutropoulos ("AK") at a.koutropoulos@umb.edu

Timeline

Deadline for proposal submission:  October 12, 2012 (Friday)

Notification of accepted proposals: November 2, 2012 (Friday)

SIG date: May 2, 2013 (Thursday)

SIG Location

Four Points Sheraton in Norwood, MA

My apologie for inadvertantly spamming everyone! It seems as thought my message went to one group 7x, instead of 1x to seven groups!
