Community members:

I'm wondering if anyone has policy in place where faculty can share or assign ownership of online content to the institution, and if so, are there examples of verbiage that can be shared?

thanks
Greg

What is your aim for this sharing back to the institution? Rights to use (i.e., a license) or ownership of the intellectual property? And, are you including patents or just copyright? And copyright for text and images or software?

At the University of Michigan, faculty hold the copyright in their scholarly works (this is assigned to them from the institution during the hiring process). If the institution would like to make use of the scholarly material (books, course material, etc.), we advocate using Creative Commons licenses for copyrighted materials. For example, our Open.Michigan initiative publishes a number of faculty learning materials as open educational resources. To have the rights to publish on the open.umich.edu web site, we have faculty assign a Creative Commons license. The details for that process are at http://open.umich.edu/share/license

Dear Greg,

We are a union shop so the policy had to go through the Union. This is what was agreed upon:

http://www.wpunj.edu/dotAsset/b986e54e-71c2-40c7-8143-bbe9e20f4190.pdf

Look at Articles XXXIII and XXXIV.

Hope this helps,

Sandie
