Message from jmhernandez@umassonline.net

Good Morning,

UMassOnline will convene a distinguished panel of higher education experts for an update on state authorization and out-of-state schools. This has been one of the hottest topics in higher education over the past year, and the event is an opportunity to hear the latest developments and implications.

In October 2010, when the U.S. Department of Education first made explicit reference to distance learning and state authorization, in the final “Program Integrity” rules, the online learning boom and state-by-state jurisdiction seemed on a collision course. Most schools enrolled online students nationwide but lacked authorization beyond their home state, and state requirements were often far from transparent.  The initial compliance deadline of July 1, 2011, risking loss of Title IV funding, looked impossible.

Join us with our guest panelists to discuss where we currently are now, how state requirements have evolved, enrollment and cost implications and much more. The panel will also review the steps UMassOnline has taken to date, and plans for the future. This event will be hosted and joined by UMassOnline Chief Executive Officer Dr. Ken Udas, and will include:

  • Dr. Meg Benke, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, SUNY Empire State College
  • Richard Garrett, Managing Director of Continuing & Professional Education Learning Collaborative and Online Higher Education Learning Collaborative, Eduventures
  • Michael Leamy, Distance Education Coordinator, Fitchburg State University
  • Paul H. Shiffman, Ed.D., Assistant Vice President for Strategic and Governmental Relations, Excelsior College

Thanks for posting Jennifer! I would only add that Ellen and I have been talking with the fine folks at UMassOnline about teaming up with Blend-Online for their speaker series - and this session is a great example of a topic that we feel will generate high quality discussion that Blend-Onliners will appreciate.

Also, it should be noted that it is possible to participate remotely via Wimba - so you can select that option when registering.

Finally, we've asked for the Wimba session to be open a bit longer than the actual sessions so that remote participants can carry on further discussion after it ends. Former Blend-Online co-leader Keith Lynip will be facilitating online discussion during and after the session.

Best,
Clark
