eTexts Constituent Group
The eTexts Constituent Group discusses the rapidly evolving domain of digital textbooks, multimedia supplements, tutorial websites, e-reader/annotation software, and related materials—that we may collectively refer to as "eTexts" for short. It is a place for community sharing of ideas, analyses, experiences, and practical outcomes of using eTexts. The primary focus is eText acquisition, delivery, business models, and support strategies that help further the interests of higher education through cost savings for students, selection of eText reader/annotation software, devices, and institutional policies. This group complements existing Teaching and Learning constituent groups that discuss EVIDENCE OF IMPACT and OPENNESS. Specific topics may include:
- The role, if any, that institutions and consortia can/should play in licensing eTexts.
- The economics of eTexts for students, faculty, libraries, IT organizations, and others.
- The relationship between adoption of eTexts and the proliferation of affordable tablets, e-readers, and other mobile devices.
- Pros and cons of emerging e-reader/annotation software platforms.
- Best practices for negotiating with content and platform providers.
- Integration of e-reader software platforms with learning management systems.
- Authoring tools, distribution platforms, and business models for educational materials.
- Ways in which faculty, students, and administration can contribute to the development of an institutional eText strategy.
This listserv will be live throughout the year and may dovetail with one or more sessions held at EDUCAUSE conferences.

With emerging software, it would seem a logical progression for
professors to develop their own eTexts for their specific courses. What
seems to be emerging in the eText paradigm, however, are "marketed to
the masses" eTexts which are, on a positive note, cheaper, but on a
negative note, lacking in the specificity as related to particular
courses at particular universities.
Are there any universities fully embracing the concept of creating
their own eTexts specific to their school's teaching culture? And, if
so, what are the challenges/rewards of this approach?

Join the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources and CCC Confer on April 30, 10:00 am Pacific for a panel discussion on rebooting California’s higher education system with Open Education, MOOCs, and an online Student Access Platform.
The California legislature, responding to shrinking budgets and huge wait lists for gateway courses, has proposed:
•Open textbooks
•Credit for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)
•The California Online Student Access Platform
Three leaders in the field share their thoughts on this revolution in higher education. What are the next steps for ensuring the success of our students? How do we continue the prominence of California’s institutions of higher
education?

A Cover to Cover Solution: How Open Textbooks are the Path to Textbook Affordability
/Gerry
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recent developments have brought signs of relief from runaway costs. In July of this year, provisions from the Higher Education Opportunity Act took effect, requiring publishers to disclose textbook prices to professors during the marketing process. Increased
awareness of cost will create an atmosphere where lower-cost options can gain traction. Concurrently, several potential solutions have evolved in the textbooks marketplace.
College textbook prices have skyrocketed in recent years, threatening the affordability and accessibility of higher education in America. The average student spends $900 on textbooks annually, which can be the tipping point between affording a...

FYI > 7 Things You Should Know About Open Textbook Publishing Abstract
The open educational resources model, including textbooks, has emerged as a response to rising text prices, a need for greater access to high-quality learning materials, the proliferation of e-reader devices, and a trend in publishing toward electronic
media. Many contend that educational resources should be open and that instructional models increasingly depend on open content. Open textbooks can be offered by commercial publishers or found in open repositories. Open resources can promote active learning
through student interaction with the text, particularly when they contribute to authorship. Although open textbooks face questions about the accuracy and reliability of their content, they allow higher education instructors to design...

Purpose of DOAB
The primary aim of DOAB is to increase discoverability of Open Access books. Academic publishers are invited to provide metadata of their Open Access books to DOAB.
Metadata will be harvestable in order to maximize dissemination, visibility and impact. Aggregators can integrate the records in their commercial services and libraries can integrate the directory into their online catalogues, helping scholars and students
to discover the books. The directory will be open to all publishers who publish academic, peer reviewed books in Open Access and should contain as many books as possible, provided that these publications are in Open Access and meet academic standards.

I hope this post opens a discussion from multiple perspectives regarding the concept of an "eText rental."
Many years ago we had new textbooks, then used textbooks, then in more recent years textbook rentals. As a physical book, a student had the book in her possession or not, but it she couldn't own it in the fall, sell it to another student, and both of them still own it in the spring.
As eTexts began to take shape in recent years, there was a price for an eText and it had certain terms and restrictions. I may very well be wrong, but I don't recall much use of the term "eText Rental" a year ago, and now we are starting to see it marketed more frequently as part of the journey from print to digital…but I'm not really sure why we want digital rentals?...

Some of you may be tracking various media accounts of this story, and I am not aware that it has been independently confirmed as accurate.
As an example, real or exaggerated, it points to what we know can happen when companies (a) rightfully act to real violations of their {constantly evolving} terms of service or (b) act on errant information and cause real harm such that individuals have no way to penetrate the customer support system. This is one of the reasons that IU wanted to move to business-to-business contracts with content and platform providers rather than business-to-student contracts.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Education and the Federal Communications Commission announced a blueprint to get all schools using digital textbooks in five years. While not mandated, the initiative encouraged schools to make the switch from
print to digital materials based on estimated cost-savings and academic improvement—because print textbooks are expensive and digital content can be more personalized. But there are questions as to whether digital textbooks are actually cheaper, especially

I have attached the results of a survey i conducted at the conclusion of my Spring 2012 courses where I arranged a package of ebooks at a very good price to students in my four undergraduate classes. The first seven questions were multiple choice. perhaps more interesting were the following short answer questions that asked for their perception and comfort in reading and using ebooks. My conclusions in brief: price is a motivating factor and there is still a real discomfort with using ebooks on currently available screens (especially desktop computing workstations). Our books are not the "curl up in a comfy chair and read" type books. We use books at lab workstations as students do tutorials and reference them to complete assignments. In my opinion, the sit-up-straight computer work station is the next device that needs to be redesigned to make ebook useful in the classroom.
