Hi Carine,
I finished an EdD program at the University of Wyoming in May of 2012. I thought it was a great program that used a combination of online, audio, and real-time video courses. Students have to go to campus just 4 or so times during the program (two weekends, proposal defense, and dissertation defense).

Hi Carine,

I recently created a new position in my department. Our Human Resources Department took the job description and requirements, including credentials and desired experience, conducted benchmark assessments, and returned a competitive salary range for the position.  I don't know if your HR department would assist you in this way, but I found it helpful in establishing the salary range for a qualified candidate.

Best wishes,

Julianne

Sounds like it could be the port settings. We had some issues like that with some Crestron QM-RMC boxes in the past. Our problem was that the devices do not “talk” on the network like the other devices you mentioned, so the switch was basically blocking the port. If your control signals are traveling through your network this could cause the problems you are describing. I would work with your network team to check port settings for these devices. You may even google AMX 2000 port settings or the like and see if you can find anything. I do not use AMX so I don’t know as much about their products…

We started playing around with the community edition of Mediacore on a media server we had (http://mediacorecommunity.org/) and it's pretty nice. You can create podcasts and then feed them into iTunesU or whatever else you want. The interface isn't bad, and if you step up to the paid SaaS model they have there are quite a few more features that the open source version doesn't have. http://mediacore.com/ For what it's worth I find their interface a thousand times more user-friendly than Kaltura ever was (whoever thought a Flash interface for the entire administrative backend was a good idea?)

We have mostly Epson projectors since our rooms are pretty small - just about all of our rooms are 30 seat.  Total enrollment is just under 700.

The Epsons are great, it's just that the highest output model is only about 5500 lumens.

We have recently installed a few Mitsubishi projectors (which we used quite a bit at my previous job and we liked) that are in the 5000+ lumens, even in these smaller rooms.

I know we have had a discussion before on ePortfolios. We are using TaskStream for accountability. I am using the beta form of Pathbrite as a visual social media platform. However, we are considering adding in the ePortfolio Blackboard tool. Does anyone use BB portfolios at their school or university? Any feedback would be great. It seems rather expensive.

Here at Fairfield University, we were for many years in the business of providing free web space on a Mac OS X Servers to faculty and to students. There were no databases offered and even PHP wasn't turned on; it was bare bones Apache. When we went to Google Mail for students in 2009, we began phasing out student web space and instead directed them to Google Sites, since it was already part of their services and tied to their University NetID accounts. For faculty, we kept the Apache web space running longer, but a couple of years ago began moving pages to folders within the Xythos File Storage system we use on campus. This is a web-based service, much like DropBox, that allows a user to set permissions on their folders and files. They just make a folder accessible to the entire world, and since the service is web based, just drop .html files in and have them served up. It's worked well because we license a product called Xythos Drive that allows folders to be mounted on the...

It sounds to me, on face appearances, that you think there is equivalency between the live and recorded version of the same lecture.

Speaking for myself, just the mention of the words "recorded lecture" make my eyes begin to close and my neck bend towards my desk - unless the presenter is exceptionally charismatic and has the ability to craft something that will hold my attention. This is the exception rather than the rule.

Consider offering something that is more of an incremental step for faculty that will enhance existing skills and build new foundation skills. For example, nearly every instructor I have had (recently) has dropped a PowerPoint file on us at one time or another. PPT is generally a poor medium for communication without a companion form of communication to elaborate on or contextualize the slide information. Our Ed Tech department at Granite State College has been considering promoting the use of myBrainShark.com as a...

All,
Sorry - I found a bit more detailed documentation that dispelled this notion of gateways, etc.  I do see that I need to make sure our, say, wireless VLAN can see the projector if it's on our wired.  And that if I wanted to I could set up a private wireless gateway dedicated to it.   I think that might have confused me a bit.

So...got a request for a smart board for a meeting room or conference room.  Something people can project to but also do quick drawings with capture, etc.

I know Smart Technologies.  Others?  I haven't gotten a chance to look at these for a little bit so I'm not sure what's out there.

Any inexpensive options?  Since this is going into a relatively controlled space we don't have to have the "rock-solid" nature of some of the higher end systems.

At the University of Kansas Medical Center, we use Camtasia Relay for lecture capture, and we keep those recordings for two years and allow one-year extensions on request. We provide and manage a central web space for lecture recordings, and this two-year policy applies only to the space we manage. However, Relay can publish to departmental directories and webservers, and those files are managed by the groups responsible for those areas. We starting using Relay in late 2009, and it was rapidly adopted by faculty for lecture capture as well as by staff for recording meetings and training. We quickly realized we would have thousands of large (10-50 MB) files to manage, so we got input from our Relay users about how long they needed their recordings. The overwhelming majority of files were not needed after two years, but some recordings, such as prominent guest speakers, might be needed longer. Implementing this policy was complicated because Relay does not provide file management...

Hi, On Monday next I take up a new role at my university to provide professional development / training to help build our capacity and capability to use technology to enhance learning and the student experience. It is an exciting opportunity but also a challenge! I'm currently working on developing resources but wondered what sort of training other institutions offered staff/faculty - especially for those planning to deliver courses at distance, on-line. For example: Does your institution insist on training before anyone can deliver a programme on-line Do you provide e-moderation training? If so, how? What other training / resources do you provide. To share what we are planning to do. We are a small institution (student number about 7 000). Currently there is no requirement to have been trained before a person can deliver on-line. We provide some training on the use of the VLE (Moodle) and I will be delivering workshops on...

Hi Folks-

We would like some input from any institutions using the hosted Moodlerooms Joule platform.

We are just finishing our first semester using the hosted Joule platform.

We are still tweaking our admin strategies, and would like some input.

We want instructors to be able to have access to courses one year after they have taught them, so that when the new shell is created, they can copy their old content into the new shell.

We thought about using the course template to do this, however I don’t think it’s much use since often times instructors don’t teach the same section of a course, which would make their content copy into someone else’s course.

So, we want to give access, yet keep the server from bloating.

If you were an outside consultant tasked with helping a University to create a sustainable and adaptable Instructional Technology initiative , what would you do?  What would be important and what might it look like?  I know this is a little meta, but I thought it would be a good exercise for all of us.  I am trying to thoughtfully consider what faculty really need and what we should do to support them.  Why should they use technology and how can we, as institutions, empower them to be thoughtful users of technology to save time, money, effort and learn to use it on their own to make life easier, freeing time for higher order thinking, applied learning, discussion group work, etc?   What should we be teaching them. If it isn't about technology, then what specifically do we need to teach the faculty we support? ********** Participation and subscription information for this EDUCAUSE Constituent Group discussion list can be found at...

"How can technology reduce or improve faculty workload now and long term?" is the question my President asked me to explore.  Below are my initial thoughts and I wondered if there were some universally applicable paradigms or ways of doing that could benefit all faculty on our campuses, where there is little time, most feel overworked and underpaid?  I include my initial thoughts below, but would like your insight, given that this group always peppers the ether with gems. . . Dear INSTTECH,

My question today is about ePortfolios for faculty as they go through the stages toward promotion and tenure. Our College of Liberal Arts Dean’s office has requested that we look into ePortfolios for faculty so that their paths to tenure and promotion can be tracked more efficiently. They are very interested in being able to generate reports over time and across cohorts.

We have started looking at ePortfolios usually used by students (we don’t have a student ePortfolio system, and I haven’t looked at the options in several years), so if you are re-purposing these successfully on your campus, or if something you are using has a faculty-specific option, that would be great to know.

Good Afternoon All -

We are implementing ePortolios on a trial basis for our first year students and one of the items that we want the students to include is a 20 minute video presentation.

The videos will have to be housed somewhere off campus so that when the students leave and take their ePortfolios with them, they will have access to the 20 minute video in their ePortfolio.  Our students don't have access to college network resources when they leave aside from their e-mail accounts that stay with them for a year after graduation.

We just tried testing using a personal Yahoo account as an option, but marking them private doesn't work and we don't feel that asking students to have them stay public is a good path to follow.

Our test video was compressed from its original AVI format to an MP4 format going down to 110MB in size, which will definitely add up once the whole freshman class starts doing these videos.

Hi, folks-

Has anyone out there tried a “mobile computer lab” model for delivering online tests in a classroom? There’s often a cart of iPads, laptops, Chromebooks, or similar, which are handed out at the beginning of the test and gathered at the end. Features and ‘net access are usually locked down to only the exam site.

My biggest question at the moment is, how long does it take to hand these things out at the beginning of the test? Our class size is about 100 – at 10 seconds per laptop, that’s still more than 15 minutes of a 50-minute class just to hand out computers. Is that a reasonable estimate, in your experience?

We plan to acquire an iPad but are at a loss on what Android device to purchase. There are several on the market and due to budget constraints, we cannot buy them all.
