My name is Faye Leibowitz, and I am the co-editor of the "Balance Point" column in the Elsevier library science journal Serials Review.
The "Balance Point" serves as a forum for multiple authors who work in areas related to serials and who present different viewpoints about current issues and controversial topics related to serials.
In my next column, I will explore the topic "Serials and the MOOC." I would like to explore how MOOC instructors and students utilize periodicals (both print and online) and article databases in their courses. I'm interested in exploring how/if subscription databases are used, how and where MOOC students access print journals, or any other topics relating to the use of serial publications in the MOOC environment.
Would you be interested in sharing your ideas about this topic in a contribution to my column?
Please let me know by May 15 if you are interested in submitting a contribution. Ideally, contributions should be three to five pages long, double...

Coursera students see their professors in the online course videos, but they do not see the teams of people working behind the scenes to make the videos possible.
The advent of massive open online courses in the higher education community—specifically Coursera, which Duke partnered with last summer—has demanded expertise from a variety of sectors across the Duke Libraries system, which is responsible for more than
just books and databases. In fact, the relationship between professors and the online Coursera platform has largely been bridged by the Center for Instructional Technology, a division...

There is true potential for librarians to become proactively engaged in MOOCs but identifying candidate Open Access learning materials and textbooks for current (and future) MOOC courses.
The process:
1) For each course, identify the non-Open Access learning materials and textbooks.
2) Identify potential possible alternatives, using existing directories and search end sites, many of which have populated the _OATS: Open Access Textbooks_ LibGuide (http://instr.iastate.libguides.com/oats),

"Haraway‘s cyborg, on the other hand, is what might be termed a networked individual, illegitimate offspring of what Haraway calls the “informatics of domination,” but still subversive to the very forces that created her. S/he is an ironic hybrid of human and

maze of dualisms in which we have explained our bodies and our tools to ourselves.” (1991) The cyborg is complicit, a part of this digital...

Greetings everyone!
The 2nd annual LMS unconference (a NERCOMP SIG*, an unSIG) will be held on January 25, 2013 at the Southbridge Hotel and Conference Center in Southbridge, MA. This is a unique opportunity to approach LMS issues in a platform neutral environment, sharing and learning strategies for system assessment, implementation, training, design and support in all relevant areas of the campus.
The unSIG format empowers participants to craft the conference program and provides opportunities for them to become the presenters. Participants, rather than event organizers, determine the topics covered in session tracks. This means that the agenda is not predetermined months in advance, but instead will include the issues and concerns that are most significant to attendees on the day of the conference.

Hi everyone!
I just joined the group and wanted to introduce myself and let you know about the project I'm working on. We recently developed a platform that allows students to learn languages from native video content through interactive exercises. Now that our platform is complete and ready to be used in blended-learning scenarios, we've created a MOOC based on the platform that will teach students Spanish through native content.
It'll run from January 21st through April 8th next year, and we're excited to be the first to integrate an adaptive platform into a MOOC, especially since so many critics highlight assessment as the biggest shortcoming of most MOOCs.
I'd love to get your feedback on what we're doing - do you think an adaptive platform is the solution to the assessment difficulties inherent in MOOCs? Do you think a foreign language can be effectively taught in this format? Any suggestions from...

It looks like Instructure is getting into MOOCs with https://www.canvas.net/
Press release here: http://www.instructure.com/instructure-launches-an-open-online-course-network-on-canvas
Hack Education post with more information here: http://hackeducation.com/2012/10/31/instructure-canvas-network-moocs/index.php
It looks like the target use case for these courses are existing Canvas clients, and Instructure's goal is to provide a new entry point for LMS customers. I suspect Blackboard is trying to do the same with CourseSites, but I don't know, Canvas just seems…. Friendlier?

Interesting article in The Chronicle about Jack Wilson's comments on MOOCs: http://chronicle.com/blogs/wiredcampus/at-conference-leaders-of-traditional-online-learning-meet-upstart-free-providers/40426

"'The hyper-prestigious universities' are not driving the change, said Jack M. Wilson, president emeritus of the University of Massachusetts, who founded UMass Online some 10 years ago, in remarks during a kickoff panel at the Sloan Consortium’s International Conference on Online Learning. He said that institutions like his and others represented at the conference, which is in its 18th year, have been slowly improving the quality, credibility, and enrollment of online courses for decades."

Hi all! I'm looking forward to using this space to discuss massive online courses and other open learning experiences as they relate to teaching, learning and educational institutions. There has been quite a bit of buzz around this over the past few months, and I'm hoping we can use this opportunity to start collecting our blog posts and Twitter reactions in an ongoing dialogue.
Perhaps an interesting place to start is by reflecting on our own experiences (or non-experiences) with MOOCs. As educational technology practitioners, I think we are in a unique position to learn by being introspective about this paradigm. Observing and reflecting on what works and what doesn't work will help us steer large-scale, open learning initiatives in a productive direction.
Have you participated in a MOOC? If so, what was your motivation? Was it a positive learning experience? How did it compare to your "formal...
