ECAR-MSAD Working Group Roster
In March 2013, members of the former ACTI Mobile Web Frameworks (ACTI-MWF) Working Group, having recently completed their white paper on the same topic, decided to review the group mission to see if more work in the area of mobility existed and could be addressed by their group. As a result of that review, the new ECAR Mobile Strategy and Application Development (ECAR-MSAD) Working Group was formed to take the place of ACTI-MWF.

Responsive Web Design
A look at the basic tenets of responsive web design, an approach that makes content available on a variety of devices. This work is being conducted in part to support a pre-conference workshop on this topic at the 2013 EDUCAUSE Annual Conference.
Exploring Mobile Data Collection in Higher Education
It’s easier than ever to collect data, and supporting experiential learning and research is a growing area for IT and technologists. One area that is rapidly expanding is the use of mobile devices for in-the-field research and learning. Mobile Data Collection is the emerging practice of collecting data using mobile devices, where new data (both passive and intentional) is then uploaded to a server for aggregation and analysis. Data sets of this nature can be collected for research, class field study, self-study, community improvement, health monitoring, political opinion gathering and more.
Students are arriving on campuses with mobile and wearable devices that they are already using for mobile data collection, and research is increasingly being gathered on these platforms. Even if your institution isn’t yet experiencing local mobile data collection efforts yet, it’s coming. The ECAR Mobile Strategy and Application Development (ECAR-MSAD) Working Group will be drafting a high-level executive brief to focus on both the promise and concerns of mobile data collection, highlighted with exploratory use cases demonstrating how learning, research, and community engagement can leverage this new technology space. If you would like to participate in this group, please contact ECARWG@educause.edu
Mission
Participants in the ECAR Mobile Strategy and Application Development (ECAR-MSAD) Working Group pool their collective resources, time, and energy towards investigating specific challenges and opportunities, sharing individual solutions, and developing effective practices in mobile web and applications for the higher-education community. The mission of ECAR-MSAD is to develop and promote collaborative mobile strategies across higher education institutions by:
- Identifying and sharing strategies to meet the device-agnostic requirements of higher education
- Finding techniques to leverage mobile devices to support the needs of faculty, staff, students, and researchers
- Exploring methods to effectively share mobile tool development and deployment best practices for teaching and learning, research, and productivity
In carrying out its mission, the group will undertake projects that focus on specific areas in the mobile space, including such areas as:
- Mobile data collection and other related areas
- Responsive Web Design
- Mobile user experience and accessibility
- Mobile development frameworks
The working group welcomes input, ideas, and project participation from the higher education community. Contact us at ECARWG@educause.edu
