Ira Fuchs

Prior to joining Next Generation Learning Challenges (http://nextgenlearning.org) as executive director, Ira Fuchs served as Vice President and Program Officer for Research in Information Technology for the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, a program that made grants of $60 million to develop innovative applications of IT for higher education, museums, libraries, and the performing arts.

In 1981, he co-founded the BITNET network, an important precursor to the Internet. In addition, he was the co-inventor of the first LISTSERV software. Mr. Fuchs was the Vice President for Computing and Information Technology at Princeton University, Chief Scientist of JSTOR, and the Vice Chancellor for the City University of New York (CUNY). In addition to his university appointments, Mr. Fuchs has served on numerous boards and committees, such as the Educom Board, and various National Science Foundation committees and corporate advisory boards. He continues to serve on boards such as Ithaka and the Princeton Public Library.
