The authors discuss the reintroduction of previous legislation into the current congress. These legislative issues include copyright and the DMCA, Cyber Security and the funding of NSF IT research.

Garret Sern

Garret Sern is a Government Relations Officer for EDUCAUSE, analyzing and reporting to its membership on a wide-range of IT issues impacting the higher education community. He currently is facilitating the Advanced Core Technologies Initiative (ACTI), a new EDUCAUSE enterprise bringing together higher education IT professionals to tackle technical challenges. He also continues to serve as the staff liaison for the EDUCAUSE Campus Cyberinfrastructure Working Group.

Prior to EDUCAUSE, Garret worked for FARNET, the Federation of American Research Networks. He continues to leverage his expertise on state and regional networks for EDUCAUSE. He also has five years experience working for Bell Atlantic (now Verizon) in directory publishing and has worked on several successful electoral campaigns in the state of Maryland.

Garret is an alumnus of Loyola College in Maryland, and the American University where he earned an MA in International Communication.

 

Wendy Wigen

Wendy Wigen bio:

Wendy Wigen is a Government Relations Officer at EDUCAUSE where she covers Internet and Telecommunications policy issues that impact the higher education community. Depending on the issue, Wendy works directly with the relevant committees of the US Senate and the House of Representatives, as well as the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Trade Commission. She works to educate federal policymakers on the needs of the EDUCAUSE community and to position EDUCAUSE as a trusted resource for technological expertise. Broadband availability, net neutrality, CALEA and peer-to-peer file sharing are some of the issues she has worked on. Wendy received her undergraduate degree at the University of Puget Sound and her MS from Syracuse University.
