Support for Online Teaching and Learning

This university has created an award-winning faculty development program for building online courses and giving learners the tools they need. Before you can implement a program like this, four key areas will have to be ready: the institution, faculty, courses, and learners.

Barbara E. Truman

Barbara Truman is the Director of Course Development in the Center for Distributed Learning (CDL) at the University of Central Florida where she serves as part of UCF’s leadership team for Online@UCF, http://www.online.ucf.

CDL is responsible for the development of strategic, online learning that provides award-winning faculty development, course development, learner support, and multimedia production to serve UCF’s ~59,000 students in the Central Florida region.
Barbara founded the department of Course Development & Web Services at UCF, after being hired to create a faculty development program to launch UCF’s online initiative in 1996. In 2009, Course Development and Web Services was merged along with the Research Initiative for Teaching Effectiveness into the Center for Distributed Learning, which has offices in the Library on the main campus and in the UCF Research Park adjacent to UCF’s Institute for Simulation and Training. Barbara also performed graduate research for the Central Florida Consortium of Higher Education and the Florida Education and Employment Council for Women and Girls in 1994-96.

Barbara served as an inaugural faculty member of EDUCAUSE’s Learning Technology Leadership Institute in 2005-2007. She has also served on program committees for EDUCAUSE’s Seminars in Academic Computing, EDUCAUSE’s Learning Initiative, and the 2009 annual conference. She also contributed to the New Media Consortium’s 2007 Horizon Report and has helped coordinate annual conferences held at UCF for the American Association for State Colleges and Universities since 2004.

Barbara's background is in instructional systems design from UCF and her primary research interests include serious games, virtual worlds, ePortfolios, and authentic assessment. In 2010, she earned a certificate in Human Performance Technology from the University of West Florida and is a doctoral student at Colorado Technical University’s Institute for Advanced Studies in the emerging media program. Barbara was formerly a military wife who became a single parent scholar earning an Operation Bootstrap scholarship to attend UCF, where she continuously advocates for nontraditional students.

Linda S. Futch

Linda S. Futch is an Associate Department Head of Distributed Learning at the University of Central Florida. Linda has been instrumental in guiding faculty development for online courses and developing systems to support faculty and students. She has developed curriculum and delivered instruction in business, high school, community college, and higher education.

Kelvin Thompson

Kelvin Thompson is an assistant director for the University of Central Florida's (UCF) Center for Distributed Learning.
Kelvin oversees several instructional media teams within CDWS and is the point of contact with outside institutions who wish to
learn from UCF's experiences with online learning. Kelvin holds an Ed.D. in curriculum and instruction and an MA in instructional systems technology from UCF.
