Teaching Critical Thinking through Online Discussions

This article discusses how faculty can play a key role in fostering critical thinking among students using Web communication tools.

Carol B. MacKnight

Carol B. MacKnight is an instructional technologist at the University of Massachusetts where she has developed over 45 instructional lessons, courses, and utility programs for delivery on the PLATO System, IBM and Macintosh platforms. She has published articles in the areas of interface design and evaluation, enhancing pedagogy with technological supports, and computer mediated communications. Dr. MacKnight is the founder and editor of the Journal of Computing in Higher Education.

She holds a B.S. from Ithaca College, a M.M. from the Manhattan School of Music, a diploma from the Fontainebleu School of Music and Art, a certificate in German from the Goethe Institute, and an Ed.D. from the University of Massachusetts. Her research interests include instructional theory and design, hypermedia systems, and Internet applications.
