For Leadership Teams Creating the Future of Higher Education
The Breakthrough Models Incubator is generously funded by the BIll & Melinda Gates Foundation

The Potential of Competency-Based Education

The 2015 Incubator will bring forward competency-based education (CBE) models which reward students for skills acquired rather than time spent in a seat.  Combined with new technology to deliver and assess learning, and a focus on outputs at all levels, CBE is a promising strategy to break the “iron triangle” and expand access, affordability, and quality learning and degree attainment for more students.

The Incubator Program

Phase 1: Design Foundations
July 28-31, 2015
The Fairmont Hotel - Washington D.C.

Teams convene in July for 2.5 days exposure to new approaches to problem-solving, and uninterrupted quality time to think, design and plan.

Phase 2: Model Design
Teams work with coaches and content experts to reinforce new ways of thinking and create actionable plans.

Phase 3: Design Launch
Teams receive feedback on their plans, celebrate their efforts and set goals for the one year milestone report.

A 2013 Participant said:

“The Incubator created for us a national institutional learning community committed to student success, which has been invaluable to us and our project.  We encourage our colleagues around the country to consider the Breakthrough Model Incubator as an asset to be utilized when taking on transformative innovation on their campus. “ – Kenneth Ender, President, William Rainey Harper College
