Project and Portfolio Management 101: The Essentials

As higher education IT organizations are increasingly pressured to produce more innovative, high-quality, and seamless technologies and services, project management and portfolio planning are being recognized as key performance indicators for successful and effective delivery. This session will provide an overview of project management components based on industry best practices and standards developed by the Project Management Institute. Guidelines on how to create and operate a Project Management Office, develop processes for project request and approval life cycles, plan and manage resource capacity and demand, and use portfolio planning and governance will be presented. The session will include a discussion of metrics and KPIs for successful project and portfolio management programs. Participants will compare and contrast their organizations' maturity in using the presented methods, tools, and techniques and walk away with a set of popular standard templates from the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK).
